My Daughter Wont Stand on Her Legs When Being Held

I have a 19 week old daughter. Ive noticed that other babies her age, give or take a few weeks, can stand on their feet when their mom holds them up on thier lap. My daughter has "jelly legs" and shows no interest in standing. Has anyone had this too at such a late age? I've asked the doctor and she said that she is fine but Im starting to get concerned.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took my daughter to the Developmental Ped. He said that she has low muscle tone. I just googled low muscle tone and of course I am scared to death now. I have a call in for Early Intervention to come evaluate her and hopefully she qualifys so we can get her some physical therapy. Does anybody have a child with low muscle tone too?

My first son walked at TEN MONTHS my second son walked at 20 MONTHS. Don't worry too much about it. It will all happen soon enough. And then you will wish for the days that she sat still so you could load the dishwasher without always looking to see where she is.

I am going to differ with all the other moms. If you feel in your gut that there is a problem, seek help. My son had developmental delays that I kept accepting because everyone would say that each child develops differently eventhough I felt like it was something more than a developmental difference. Anyway, you can refer your daughter to your state's birth to three program. They will come to your home and evaluate her motor skills and, if needed, provide the appropriate physical therapy in your home. It is all FREE. I have been thrilled with the services in my state. If there is a problem, the earlier you start intervention, the better the results. Good luck and contact me directly if you would like additional information.

Don't worry. All babies develop at a different rate. My first son spoke words early, but never babbled as a baby, and my second son babbled from the time he was born but was a little slower talking. Probably when your baby is one year she'll be talking her head off while all those other babies will be able to do is walk. Like I said try not to worry.

Don't worry, my son didn't even put pressure on his feet when being held until 9 months. Now, he's a year old and pulling himself up all over the place. If the doctor showed concerns, then I would. But she said your daughter is fine. I wouldn't worry about it. Hope this helps!

My daughter had the same jelly legs too. and it took her a long time i thought to stand when i held her, but like everyone told me children do things at different rates. My daughter didn't start to even stand on her own until about 12 months. and now at almost 2 she is running around everywhere and keeps me busy.. don't worry..

Hi-
I wouldn't worry about this so much. Like everyone else has said, babies develop at different rates. My son didn't walk until he was 14 months old. Your daughter is only about 5 months old and has a ways to go in her development. It should happen when she is ready. On the other hand, you know your child best and if you think this may be another issue, I would speak with her pediatrician for advice.

I agree. Try and not compare your daughter to other babies, it's hard not to, but they do all develop at different rates. I have a girlfriend who's son is 1 week older then my daughter and she was CONSTANTLY comparing the two of them.. It was frustrating for me. My daughter did not crawl/roll over at the same rate he did, but she talks up a storm and is now crawling/pulling herself up on everything. You should just enjoy every second with your little one and try not to worry so much about what they 'should' be doing, if your doc is not worried, I wouldn't worry.

It's so hard to not compare your baby with others..most parents seem to do this.

However, you know your baby best and if something concerns you, I'd look into it and be persistent with it to your doctor. If time goes on and she's still not standing with assistance, after 6 or so months, check back again with your doctor and it never hurts to get another professional's opinion.

I think your baby is doing just fine, but you know her better than any of us that are responding to you do, so trust your instincts if you are ever concerned about anything.

She is still pretty young, but I had the very same problem if it does not improve VERY soon I would seek a specialist,(a pediatric neurologist that specializes in muscular dystrophy,ie= Dr. Finkle at CHOP) If she is able to sit w/ minimal support at 5 mos and lift her head when on her tummy they are good signs, My daughter had the "jelly legs" would not always lift her head when on her tummy, could only sit w/ support and was a very slow botle sucker, my pediatrician said she was fine too. When she was @8 mos she began to lose weight and seem ill, (rsv symptoms) she died @ 10 mos later of a VERY rare form of muscular dystrophy, if we would have caught it earlier on there is a very good chance she would still be here today, (she passed almost 4 yrs ago now)Good luck and I hope that I am not scaring you, but when it comes to your child MOTHER KNOWES BEST!!!!!!!!if she doesn't seem right keep pressuring your DR and seek the help of a specialist...

Dear A.
Please don't worry about this! Your daughter is only 19 weeks old. Does she do other physical activities a typical baby is supposed to? Rolling? Holding her head up? Reacting to stimuli? Standing, crawling and walking are all things that babies do at different ages. If she isn't walking by 14 MONTHS you should be concerned. Enjoy your daughter and don't worry what others are doing.

I had to laugh a little to myself when I read your request. My god-daughter was a "lazy" walker. She wouldn't stand or walk when anyone was looking. Even at 10 months old, she happily sat in her walker. But, when everyone turned their heads, she would stand up, pick up the walker and travel around the house. I think she just liked being carried everywhere by "mommy". Don't worry. Put her in a walker, a stationary bouncer on or the floor more. She'll build up her leg muscles and be off before you know it. Then you'll have a whole other bunch of worries and wonder why you wanted her to walk in the first place ...lol... Good luck to you.

My child was basically late with everything. Don't worry about it, especially when the docs are saying it's okay. They all develop at their own pace. My daughter was always slow when it came to gross motor movements, but I noticed that her fine motor skills were much better than her cousins'.
