Everything is fine.
Little Empress is developing at her own pace and on her own schedule.
Some kids go forward, some go backward, and some just roll over a lot.
Do not worry.
She'll crawl forward when she's ready.
And then, after what seems like only a few weeks,
she'll start wearing lipstick and will want to date the high school lettermen.
Take a deep breath and just enjoy it all as it happens.

I agree, totally normal or lets say typical. It is easier for them to move backward than forward and most babies do it first. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

My daughter is almost 11 months and just started going forward at about 10 months. One day she wasn't doing much of anything, and then she just was. Now she is all over the place! They all progress at their own pace - it sounds like your daughter is right on target.

Kids find their own ways to motate. Some drag along with their elbows, some sit on their tushies and scoot, my daughter didn't crawl until after she walked. I wouldn't worry about it.
It's all exercise and learning at this point and they do get it figured out.

She's fine. It's a normal progression. Get "What to Expect the First Year" - the book gives good milestones and age ranges, ie, some children (very few) walk at 9 months - but it is still in the NORMAL range if they walk at 18 months - after 18 months, you talk to the doctor about potential developmental delays. My kids crawled forward at 11 months - and my eldest is a track runner!

Dear Christina, All children are different. Some never crawl at all. I knew a child that rolled from one side of the room to another, some do this forward thrust. She will be fine. Soon she will be walking. Grandma Mary

I worked in a CCC and there was a little girl who would not crawl at all. The way she got around was stictly on her tush. She skooted around, as long as she is able to move around

Christina,
Don't worry about it, each and every one of my kids did something different. For example my daughter crawled until she was 15 months, then my first son walked before he crawled and that was at 10 months (although this one sat up at 2 months and was in a highchair by 3 months), then my next one crawled and walked at the same time (it was so weird, one minute he was walking and we were all excited then he stood up and walked to me and we all were speechless). Now my 4th child (3rd son), walked on his knees until he was 3 and he didn't care where he was or what the weather was outside he insisted on walking everywhere on those knees and refused knee pads. My last one crawled backwards for 6 months then walked late. Yes like you with the first few I was concerned, but after a while you come to realize they are each their own little person. So as you can see they all develop differently and that is okay because they are all individuals. Hope this helps.

You've gotten a lot of great responses. I agree your daughter is fine. So I just wanted to add that I worked in an daycare infant room for 16 years, and it is more common for a child to crawl backwards first.Your daughter is figuring things out. She's almost ready so enjoy this!

My dd did the same thing and at 10months she was crawling forward and about a week later she was pulling herself up and started walking to and from differant toys and furniture. and could not be stopped by 11 months. So dont worry about it she is hitting other makers its just not important to her right now.

For some reason your daughter is not going through her developmental steps quite right. Each developmental step creates not just a physical change, but also neurodevelopmental changes as well. Have you ever heard that a child needs to crawl in order to read well? That is because the steps leading up to crawling as well as crawling itself helps develop the brain's ability to process information visually.

The pediatrician does not know as much about this as an occupational therapist. It is their job to help your daughter do her job - which is to play, have fun, and develop.

Good luck, and I know that she will do fine in the future with the interventions to help her now.

Every child is different. Don't compare your daughter to your prior child or to other children, some things are better at some things while other kids do better at other things. My daughter never really crawled in the real sense of the word, she would sit on the floor, slam both hands in front of her between her legs and pull her butt forward that way. No big deal. She's a perfect little toddler. So my suggestion is just relax and let her do her thing. She'll get there one way or another.

She's okay. She'll do frontwards eventually. Look at it as her being in practice for backing a car out of the driveway in not too many years!

Honey,
It's always a good idea to go to see the pediatrician if you have a concern about your child. Only the MD can examine your baby and determine that all is well. You will feel relieved when the baby gets a clean bill of health.

This is normal. Few kids really do the hands and knees forward crawl (esspecially at 9 months). I have a nephew that just rolled everywhere and my husband skipped crawling entirely and went straight to walking. All kids are different and she'll get where she's going eventually. She'll just do it Her Way.
