So What Happened?

This was my first experience with online advice and I so appreciate all of you who wrote in to share your wisdom. It was so helpful and after ruling out some things, I found a solution. My daughter seems to be doing this more as an attention grabbing device so I stopped making it into a huge deal. I also used the "alternative chew toy method" and she seemed to lose interest. Thanks again for your time and for sharing the information.

My daughter has significant oral sensory issues and still at age 7 seeks oral stimulation by chewing and the like. What helped her (and still does) is a vibrating stick or electric toothbrush. Since your daughter is only three, you have more options. The most economical is a vibrating teething toy which you can usually find in Walmart or Target. They have texture as well as vibrate which helps satisfy the oral sensory need. It also helps them to develop their oral sensory so they can move beyond it. It's recommended by occupational therapists and speech and language therapists.

Absolutely. my son (4 1/2) used to lick things - but mostly me. I've had to work with him on it because I really didn't like it. He stopped.

It's an annoying phase. I used to say when he did it, "licking is for lollypops" or "you can get really sick if you lick germs"

Try not to make a big deal about it if possible. Of course you want to keep her safe from licking items that are harmful to her too. Maybe try giving her a choice of things she can lick, such as food items or baby teething products. Say something like, "if you feel like to have to lick something you can lick..." I think eventually she'll stop on her own. Hope this helps and good luck!

She is experiencing their environment..
My son loved dried Papaya..
Or..does she take vitamins..maybe she is missing something in her diet...and that is her bodies way of searching for it..
Good Luck

I would get her evaulated for Sensory issues. She is craving oral stimuli probably. Have no fear my son did it and with therapy OT he is much better now. Check into it. Good luck, M.

she is probably deficient in some type of mineral and searching for it in her environment. perhaps you could get her some supplements that will meet her needs and this will stop. I think she could also be trying out textures as she is only three. still taking in the world around her....don't panic but stay on your toes to make sure she doesn't get anything deadly in there.
