Well, it's been a long road of dr visits, but finally an answer to her abdominal pain! She is in surgery right now having her gallbladder & appendix removed.

Anyone have any advice? Words of wisdom? This is going to be a long couple of hours.

Hopefully they will be able to get it out laparascopically for an easier recovery :-)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the prayers.

I'm using the internet as a distraction. I hate waiting. LOL. I'm sure she'll be fine. She's 17, so not a baby. Although she certainly whines like one at times.

I made sure I ate breakfast before we left the house. I brought coffee with me, so I'm good for now. She should be on recovery by 10am if all goes well.

Surgery went as expected. No complications. She's in her room sleeping off the anesthesia.

Patti, she had a hida scan which showed her gallbladder only functioned at 13%.

I'm so glad it went well.. I'm considering getting my gall bladder out and have had severe stomach pains off and on and many visits to the ER.. Did they do a hiatal scan or how did she finally discover she needed this done? thanks for any help!

Wow!
I hope she feels better once it's all over.
With gall bladder on one end of the intestines (up by the stomach) and appendix on the other end I imagine there will have to be more than one incision, but with a laproscope they should be small.
Try to relax and have a little lunch.
You'll find out how it all went in a few hours time.

Praying for a successful surgery and easy recovery for her and for you. Words of wisdom - there are studies that prayers do help. There are people who say they felt those prayers even while unconscious. It can't hurt - just like insurance. C.

Ugh. I hate waiting during surgeries. I'm surprised the pagers last as long as they do, being clutched by anxious parents, like we're holding onto cliffs and they're all that are keeping us from tumbling off.

Go eat. And drink.

Adrenaline shuts off the digestive system, so you won't feel hungry... but you need to eat. I 'count' frappucinos as eating during surgery, but a burger is better.

I'm glad I was still smoking for most of my son's surgeries... being able to be around other parents (in the designated smoking areas) was a HUGE blessing (being able to talk / get advice/ freak out around people who totally get it/ being able to laugh/ being able to stop midsentence as the pager buzzes and take off with everyone totally getting it). If you smoke... head down there. If you don't... there's usually a parent 'lounge' which is almost as good.

Hugs!

My little one has only had tubes, but I have had friends with kids who have had surgery like that. Just be prepared for a rocky awakening. Hopefully she will do great when she wakes up, but it can be a little rough because they may be dizzy or sick to their stomach.

So happy for you that they have hopefully found the problem and she will be a happy girl now!! good luck!

I know I'm eating my own words when I say this but walk around the hospital (ours has a garden) if they don't let you in the room with her and also make sure you get something to eat...

... that's my advice and I don't listen to it. When my son was in the hospital, I was with him 24/7 and lost 10 lbs for the two and a half days I sat there with him with only a few small breaks. It's hard to leave if you have the opportunity to be there but I was so tired after that that I did not have the energy when I got home. Adrenaline only last for so long. So from experience, take a break when she's sleeping and get some fresh air and food so when you guys get out of the hospital, you can continue to help her relax and heal. Lots of ((((hugs)))) to the two of you!

Scary! do know I have had the surgery and really was shocked at how easy the recovery was compared to years ago. I felt like skating in the afternoon, but I didn't.

I was in the 4th grade when my appendix was removed, not laparascopic available then. I have a 5 inch scar on my bikini line (at least I got lucky with that). I week later it was xmas and then a desert camping trip and I was on the three wheelers. I was careful (no I wasn't supposed to be on them yet). With that said, I was younger and WAY more invasive and was fine. The way they do it now is amazing. I had a friend have their gallbladder removed and they healed very quickly. She will be fine. Waiting for surgery to be over is the hardest part. Luckily you have us to keep you busy...lol =)

Hugs.

When my daughter was 7, she had to have surgery for a Hernia.
We had to head to the hospital at like 5:00am, lots of waiting, meeting the surgeon and his team, getting her prepped etc. the surgery was at like 10:00am, laparoscopic surgery. Then recovery after. We were at the hospital all day.
She was a real trooper about it all.
She actually said after, that she was glad she had the surgery, because then she won't have pain anymore, and won't have to worry about her Hernia. I was amazed at how resilient she was and how she understood about her condition and surgery.

It will be okay...

This might sound weird, but some of my favorite memories are of my moments with my daughter right after her tonsillectomy. I loved doting on her when she wasn't feeling well and she was so sweet and brave. It's scary when they are in surgery, but she'll be just fine. I had my appendix out when I was 8 and it was the old fashioned way. It wasn't that bad at all. It was more of an adventure than anything. Stay strong and my thoughts are with you and your daughter.
