My Daughter Has This Weird Agressive Thing She Does at 2 Yrs

OK so my daughter is the most compliant sweet natured 2 year old. She would rather give up all her toys then fight. She's great about sharing and the only frustration/anger she ever shows is when I'm talking too much with other people and she want's my attention.

But, when we are playing with stuff, blocks, cups, mostly organizational toys, she gets ... its hard to describe. She starts to mess everything up in an aggressive way, tossing the blocks around, moving her hands too and fro like she's almost sturring. She doesn't appear angry. She doesn't cry. She just goes into this, "mess it up" frenzy for a couple minutes then calms down.

I know I'm probably way over reacting but I wonder what the heck she's doing.

Anyone else have this experience?

My 6yr. old daughter has bipolar, which is a combination of disorders, one of these being like a reverse autism,(If she walks into a cleaned organized room at home she instantly reacts by pulling stuff out onto the floor.) It's annoying to me because I'm an everything has it's place person. So we have conflict, but I realize she is the little person that has allot of learning to do(I deal). If this grows to be the case, I would look further into it, but I agree with everyone saying that it's her age and normal. You sound like an odservant parent(KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK). I knew when my daughter was 1 yr old something wasn't right, things progressed from there. Just proceed as your are, and use your mothers instinct.
Good Luck

My daughter (22mos) does the same thing at times. I think it is perfectly normal behavour for this age. I would say my daughter just thinks its funny to make the mess....almost like she does not want any organization or something. I would not be concerned....sounds like normal toddler to me.

Could be she's "over it" way before you are. Remember, kids this age have an attention span of less than 10 minutes. This may be her way of saying "enough!". In the future, stop before she reaches this stage. Change what you are doing. If you are building with blocks, only do this for about 5 minutes. Praise her on how good she did then get her interested in something else.If she wants to go back to the blocks, let it be her decision.

Remember when you were a kid? The most fun thing about building is knocking it down!

Both my kids went through this, my son more so than my daughter though. It sounds like a stage, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask her about it and why she likes to 'stir' or knock the things down. At 2 she should be able to tell you why she does it. It might not stop, but at least you'll understand it a little better.

Your daughter is acting like a normal 2 year old. They just like to do this. It is partly a control issue, and partly just fun. You should read The Secret Lives of Toddlers. It talks about all the wierd behaviors toddlers exhibit and is very interesting.

It almost sounds like your daughter is "stimming", which is a term that I've learned in reading about Autism Spectrum Disorders (my son has one). But from the way you describe your daughter, I would have to say this really is "normal". Kids your daughter's (and my son's) ages brains are developing at such a fast pace, they sometimes have trouble "keeping up with themselves", and that may be just what your daughter is going through when this is happening. Since she doesn't appear to be "angry" or "frustrated", and it only lasts for a short time with these particular toys, I wouldn't worry too much about it. However, if you notice that she does start to develop "anger" issues that involve destructive behaviors (breaking or tearing toys and other things) or hurting other people or herself, then I would call her pediatrician for a consult.

Hope this helps!

My son does the exact same thing!!! I've explained it to my mom and to others and they usually look at me like...what?!?! I think he does it for attention or out of frustration (I notice if we are at a playgroup and the kids are not sharing he does it alot) It seemed like such a strange behavoir and it only started a few months ago...i usually make him pick up the mess and redirect him. I'm glad to hear someone elses child does this as well...Maybe we should get the kids together. lol!
