My daughter is 12 and has been having severe stomach pain for 6 weeks. We have been to Blount Memorial hospital and to her pediatrician numerous times. We were referred to Dr. Al-Tawil at Children's Hospital and he has done a Colonoscopy and Endoscopy. The Colonoscopy showed that she has 1 ulcer in her colon (not stomach). The doctor thinks it may be Crohns Disease but the biopsy was normal. He has since done a small bowell series which was also normal and the next test he is going to do is where she will swallow a small capsule that has a camera in it. Here's the thing, she has been and continues to be in severe pain this entire time. She has no energy and has lost 12 pounds (she is very small so she didn't have any to spare). The doctor said he can't give her anything for pain until they find out what is wrong. She has also vomited blood (only once). I am very frustrated and tired of waiting on doctors! She is being home schooled because she is so sick. She doesn't sleep well because the pain wakes her up a lot. We have used a heating pad but that doesn't help. It is killing me because she is in pain and I can't stop it. She is my world and I am so worried about her. Has anyone else expereienced this kind of problem or does anyone have any suggestions to help with the pain or any suggestions at all? Please, please let me know if you do. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Sounds like Celiac's Disease. I have this and started having symptoms with puberty. There are a lot of symptoms associated with this disease and all are mostly related to extreme malnutrition. It get's worse with time and by the time I was 20 I had skin rash, daily vomiting, joint pain, depression, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, bloating, muscle loss, fatigue, brain fog, low blood sugar, numbness in my extremeities, and amenoreia. The good new is this disease goes away with a gluten-free diet. Today, it's easier than ever to live well and be happy while going gluten-free.

Bad news is the blood tests don't work and most GI specialists do the endoscopy biopsy's too high in the small intestines to get a sample of the diseased intestinal villa. You need to find a doctor who knows something about this disease. Don't give up and go ahead and start the diet and see if she get's better.

When I was in high school I had problems with stomach pains for a year and the doctors thought I was just lactose intolerant. I finally had such severe pain that they admitted me to the hospital for tests. After an ultrasound they found an ovarian cyst the size of a golf ball. I did not have any weight problems but you may want to see if they can check that just in case. It is worth a try. I hope she feels better soon!

The only advice I know to give is to be persistent and proactive about your child's healthcare. It might take going to 10 doctors or more to find the answer but someone will find it. Don't waste prescious time either by waiting on doctors to himhaw around and wait for results....go on to another dr while you wait.
It's obviously not going away and not getting better so something is wrong. Do all the research you can on the interenet as well. Don't freak out about all that you find that could be wrong but simply educate yourself on the possibilities according to the symptoms.
Mamasource is a good forum to ask your question so I'm sure someone can stear you in the right direction!
May God be with you and your child! You all will be lifted up in prayer!

Maybe she should be check for female problems!? Has the doctor thought of this? Sometimes if you are seeing pediatrician this never enters their minds. I have nothing against them it is just that they look at only children problems and do not seem to think outside the box, that a child, can have a adult problem. We have always used a regular family doctor for all three girls and I feel we get a better fit for a doctor. Being that your daughter is 12 it is not unlikely that this could be something in the ovaries, etc...We will be praying for her!

My daughter had a mystery illnes once for several months vomiting and diarrhea. No one could tell me what was wrong with her. It was terrible!! She lost weight, she was clearly dehydrated and very miserable. After months of this illness she finally get well but it scared me to death. It is different then what you are explaining but I understand your frustration. Shortly after the stomach issues stop her face swelled up like a balloon in the middle of the night. NO ONE could tell me what was wrong with my baby. Every time she would lie down her face would swell up. They told me it was unrelated but I just didn't think so. That finally stopped too. I NEVER found out what happend to my child. She is fine now.

Hi D.~

My son was diagnosed with Crohn's at age 16, he is 19 now. Same story...upper and lower scopes indicated Crohn's, but the biopsy came back normal. Pill camera confirmed the disease. They really want to be sure that it is Crohn's before they begin treatment with steroids and other medications because the treatment is hard on the body.

I know this is difficult, all the waiting and more test. If you feel that you're having difficulty getting quick appointments then say something. But if they are scheduling you within reasonable time frames, trust them and be strong for your daughter. My son goes to Vanderbilt Children's hospital and sometimes it takes 5-6 days before you can get in for test procedures.

Crohn's is difficult for children and parents. Educate yourself, but as read things on the internet, keep in mind that each person has their own experince with this disease. Some struggle more than others and some have one major flair up and then the disease subsides.

I will pray for her (and you) that God will ease her pain and that the doctors will quickly have the test results they need to begin treatment. If you need soemone to talk to, my email is ____@____.com

I have a 12 year old girl as well, she got the flue 8 months ago. She had the flu for about 3 weeks and then got over everything apart from the stomach pain. She explains it as "Stinging". It gets worse and gets better but has never really gone away since she got the flu in the first place. She lost 6 kgs in the first two months so we were in and out of hospitals, first the local hospital where they ran every test under the sun and couldnt find anything then they sent us to the bigger childrens hospital and they did every tests under the sun. The tests showed that she has no Lactase Enzymes now which means she is lactose intollerant, she also gets mucosa in the neck from her reflux. Apart from this they have found no other reason why she would be in pain. I fought the doctors to do a colonscopy but i lost that battle. 8 months on and she is still no better. We tried all the drs medications and they didnt work and i didnt want her on them long term so we dumped them months ago as they told me they couldnt do anything else apart from pain management. I told them literally where to shove that cause why should a 12 year old girl have to go through that just find out the cause of it all. Anyways since then we have gone down the natural route of naturopathic treatment and are still thru him, we are also seeing a osteopath as I have heard that he may help. Anything is worth a shot. We have had one treatment with him and found that he helped for the first three days and then she has gone downhill severly, worse then she was before. She now is hugging a bowl at all times as she feels nausea and she wont eat properly cause it hurts more than usual.
I dont really have the answer but wish someone would, I cant give up on my daughter as she is worth every fighting step even though the drs have done so. I am trying to get into another childrens hospital for a second opinion, until then I am just taking it a day at a time. When she goes to school she spends a maximum of 2 hrs there as it hurts to much. If you have found any answers would be muchly appreciated if you could share them.
I have fully researched everything about this problem and their is alot of different stuff out there that it could be but because she dont have all the symptoms they wont do anything about it. I still want a colonscopy done on her so they can check her bowel and intestines fully, as from the start I feel that this may be a problem. But until then cant find that out.

Frankly D., I would be screaming at this doctor for not giving your daugther pain killers to help. So how long will it be before she has the next test? How long will she have to suffer. The problem will still be there whether she is on pain killers or not. He CAN give them to her NOW and have you not give her any pain killers on the day of the test. To make a child suffer because he doesn't know what the problem is is ludicrious!!! I am sorry, I have chrone's disease. I know the pain she is going through. There are things he can give her to help with the pain. Have him treat it as chrone's until he is sure. If not, then go to another doctor. Get all her tests and go find a doctor that can help her. Leaving her in pain is not the answer.

I have been living with this disease for over 20 years. Luckily I have it fairly under control. The last bought I had with it was 5 years ago and I ended up with bleeding leasions throughout my intestines. However, every case is different and I chose more of a natural holistic approach which works for me. I have been off the bentyl/dicyclomine for 4 years now and only have small bouts of problems when I get extremely upset.

I wish you luck with your daughter. Go find another doctor that will not make her suffer while you wait to find out what is wrong.

I will pray for your daughter.

I believe that it is borderline malpractice for the physician not to give your child something for the pain. I would strongly suggest that you take your child to a University based hospital in a larger city for testing and treatment. Blount Memorial would not be the hospital of choice in this situation. The sooner your get her to someone who knows what they are doing, the better.

I am not sure where you are located but do not stop until you get answers. I have Crohn's disease and I can tell you that it presents differently in each patient. If you are near a major hospital, please go to a GI specialist that is board certified. Could be Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis or some other IBD but also could be IBS. Stress exacerbates most any GI problems. H. Pylori also causes pain in the stomach and it is caused from peptic ulcers causing damage. You can do a simple blood test to rule that out. If she is losing weight, keep seeing a doctor until they find out what it is. GI diseases are hard to diagnose and do take time. She could also have an overgrowth of "bad" bacteria in her colon. Ask her doctor to prescribe Xiafaxin for her for at least 10 days. It is an antibiotic that only works in the colon. Best wishes to you and your daughter. I wish you well.

You may have to do your own investigating and "doctoring" if your daughter's doctor is stymied. I would check into food allergies or sensitivities, which often mimic diseases but many times are not cured by the medication which helps those diseases. Many people cannot tolerate common foods and food additives like wheat, corn, soy, dairy products, artificial food coloring and/or flavoring, MSG, etc.

Go to alcat.com and see what they say about it -- they have a blood test to determine what foods a person is individually sensitive to. It may help your daughter.

I understand your great desire to want to relieve your daughter's pain by medication, and it sounds as if you haven't gotten a good answer from the doctor for why she cannot have any pain medication. You should request clarification -- it may be that if he gives her something for pain, it may make her problem worse, and he is concerned about that. For instance, many people with stomach ulcers cannot tolerate doses of prescription narcotics, and instead it will make them violently worse. If your doctor doesn't have a good reason for denying pain medication, then I would encourage you to advocate for your daughter, but you need to know his reasoning, and not just rely on "I'm the doctor, that's why." If you cannot get better information (or better help), you may want to switch doctors.

Hi D.,

I am sorry to hear that your daughter has been having severe stomach pain and you are not getting answers from the medical professionals. I understand what you are going through.

In October of 2007, my daughter started complaining of stomach pain. She would have bouts of vomitting and be extremely fatigued. At first we thought she had the flu but after the 4th episode, we realized it had to be something else. After numerous trips to the ped and them pushing meds before knowing a cause, tests, referrals to specialists, and diet changes I found a certified nutritionist in Franklin, TN that uncovered her underlying issue.

My daughter had pararsites. It's very common in children & adults...85-95% of the population has them and is unaware. My daughter was given a supplement that she took 2x a day and it detoxed her body of the parasites. Her first appointment was August 2008 and within 1 week she was pain free. In 6 weeks time, my daughter was healthier than I ever imagined she would be and we were still waiting to get in for the appointment with the GI Specialist.

I never imagined the supplement and our visit to the nutritionist would be so successful. I was amazed and relieved to see my daughter acting like a 5 year old again. She has been pain free since September 2008. She had her appointment with the GI Specialist in November of 2008 and I had a pain & food journal so that we could look for any patterns with her pain. As the specialist viewed the journal she was amazed to see that after starting the supplement she was pain free.

You can read about the nutritionist here and her background. I know for us, it was a leap of faith and I was willing to try anything while we waited for the appointment with the specialist but after the results we saw here, I have since taken my family to the nutritionist to address issues we each were having. Our results have been remarkable. We're treating the CAUSE not the symptoms. If you have questions or want to know more feel free to send me a message.

Before you give her anything that is over the counter (herbal remedies as well) ask the doctor. If the pain is unendurable, go to the emergency room for help.

That is the only thing I can think of that you can do. Just ask what you can do at home to help with some of the pain. Have you researched the suspicions that the doctor has suggested?

I hope your daughter starts feeling better and gets the right diagnosis. Give us an update.

Hi D.,
You received some wonderfully informed responses! Just wanted to say I am praying for your daughter.

I went thru severe stomach pain last year and the doctors could not figure what it was. Every test came back normal. Now, (knock on wood) I am fine. I pray this will get quickly diagnosed for her or vanish! When I was in the worst pain I would go to the doctor's ofc. and they would mix me up some sort of drink...I know there was lidocaine in it. It would give me some relief. They also prescribed me some sort of pain pills which I would break into 1/4ths (I have children to care for, can't be drugged!) and that would really help.

Demand they make her comfortable until they figure out what this is! Demand a 2nd opinion. Squeeky wheel get the grease---Squeek like H*LL!! ;-) Hugs to you and your daughter. Don't worry, this too shall pass!!

My daughter is going through almost the same thing!!!

Here is a brief situation of my daughter and what we have been through and possible diagnosis......

At the age of 3 we found a very small amount of blood in her stools and if I wasn't staring at the poop while wiping, I may not have seen it. Sometimes there, sometimes not. We did tests on her stools when there was no visible red blood and the test came back positive for blood in stools when not visible. Did the colonoscopy and found some inflamation/irritation on large intestines. They said to keep journal of symptoms and what she ate and not to worry too much about it. (STUPID ME)
Over the years, she will occasionally have blood in her stools but no pain. She is 9 1/2 now. 2 weeks ago she doubled over in serious pain and we rushed her to the hospital thinking it was appendicitis...(no appendicitis)and gave her pain meds and told us to follow up with gastroenteroligst cuz they thought it was colitis due to her history in the past.
Although the severe pain is gone, she is still in "manageable" pain (as she says)and everytime she sits down to eat, she takes 2 bites and won't eat anymore and says it hurts. She is beginning to lose weight and her stomach is beginning to look badly bloated.

Went to GI and they did blood test for Chrohn's and Colitis...they came back negative, but they said it wasn't ruled out that at a young age these don't always show in blood tests till older. Did stomach scan and saw some small swelling of abdomen and some old poop. Gave her muscle relaxers and stool softner and sent us home. Said to wait and see how she is doing before schedule a Stomach scope. They have given me 4 things it could be...Crohn's, Colitis, Merkel's Diverticulum, and Hirsch Sprung's Disease.

I might read up on the last 2 and talk with your doc about them....My 2 family members that are doctors brought up the last 2 and the GI doc was not aware of them because they are rare, but is extremely interested in doing tests for them, because she has the symptoms. (one of the other symptoms is blood in vomit as well)

They should atleast give her some hydrocodone to help her sleep at night! No reason for her to be in pain while they try and figure it out!

Hope it helps!! Keep me posted on your findings...I could use the info too!

It looks like a lot of people have given you great advice as to what the stomach pain might be caused by, so I wanted to give you some advice in regards to the pain.

Your poor daughter and poor you, my heart goes out to you both.

I wanted to recommend EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). It is a tapping technique that taps on acupressure points. Recommending this does not mean I think it is "all in her head" - EFT can help with real physical pain.

There is a free manual at www.emofree.com and you can get a free cheatsheet at www.tapping.com . This website also has a free manual - http://www.schoolmademucheasier.com/ . Here are some more basic instructions - http://www.thrivingnow.com/for/Health/basic-eft/ and a diagram - http://www.thrivingnow.com/for/Health/eft-tapping-points/ . It is very easy to learn and use on our children.

Hey, I know other people have said the same thing, but I thought if I said it again, it wouldnt hurt!
I do have Crohns Disease, and it took years and emergency surgury, with removal of 9 inches of my large intestines to figure out what was wrong. There are some blood tests that can be done now that can indicate Crohns or not.
However, Crohns is also a side effect/symptom of a severe Gluten allergy, and/or possibly Celiacs Disesase.
The best way to figure out is to remove Gluten from her diet, and if that is what was wrong she should start feeling better very quickly! Within two weeks most symptoms will dissapear, and in 8 she will have totally healed! Try it, and dont just treat her pain with painkillers, it doesnt stop whats causing the pain, just masks it so she cant feel it, subsequently making it worse!

Dear D.,

I feel horribly for you and your daughter and wish you both well. I do not have a medical answer for you, however it is serious enough to seek a second opinion. Go to a larger city or a specialist. If she is losing weight, this is important as it could be any number of things and the doctor needs to rule them out. Do not give her anything OTC or herbal without first getting a diagnosis. As for the pain: does she eat at all? Can she get through the day without being bedridden? One person's pain is not the same as another's, so severe pain needs to be clearly described to the doctor in order to get any action.

I wish you the best. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am praying for your daughter, you and your family.

I had a stomach ulcer when I was in the 7th grade. I had such severe pain I was sent home from school almost everyday. My mom took me to the doctor and found out it was an ulcer brought on by stress of being in a new school, making new friends, and just stress in general. It eventually healed itself as the doctor did not like to use drugs to treat someone as young as I was back then, this was 1975 and I was 12.

I would have your daughter checked for ovarian cyst also as someone else suggested. My niece had these and lost a lot of weight and hurt badly. She had to have the cyst removed before it ruptured as it was to that point. Also have them check her for a twisted ovary as this sometimes happen and is said to be quite painful. If you aren,t getting any answers I would definitely seek another doctors opinion.

Most of all take it to the Lord in prayer and lay it at His feet. I will keep her in my prayers.

Blessings,

I don't have much advice for you except to keep nagging the doctor or find her another one. I've been going thru the same thing for the last 2 years. I've had chronic diarhea since my early 20's and I'm 40 now. It has just kept getting worse and now I have stomach pains, bloating, gas and nausea/vomiting. I had my gallbladder out 6 months ago and that helped with some of the pain but I still have all the other problems. My first colonoscopy and Crohn's test were negative. I just had a second one and they found some lesions. I went to Vanderbilt for more tests and they found Chrohn's disease. So the first test was probably wrong. The intestines are very long and if they don't biopsy the right part then of course they won't find a problem. I'm still waiting for treatment, they haven't given me anything either and told me to not take anything but tylenol. I know how hard this is as an adult and I can't imagine what it is doing to your child.

I am not a doctor, however, one of my very good friends has a daughter who is 13 and going through very much the same thing. Turns out she has no motility - her body is not moving and digesting the food. The reason for the pain is that it sits in her stomach and rots. Ask the doctors to check that for you. You and your daughter are in our prayers.

I am so sorry for all the problems and the pain your daughter is going through.
The vomiting blood could be from her ulcer. I would try to get your daughter to narrow down the exact spot the pain is coming from, such as low abdomen or high stomach. I know it is usually unheard of for kids to have gallbladder problems but it has happened. Ask the dr to do an ultrasound. I guess there is really nothing else you can do except wait on the docs.
I would give her some benedryhl at night to help her sleep and lots of tylenol. Other than that, there is not much else you can do unless you want to go to another doctor and get a second opinion.
Sorry and I hope it all works out for her

Dear Dona,
When I was about that age I had almost same problem, ------ “fearing to fear, and early adolescence obsessive compulsive disorder". My parents did everything, from hospital specialists to traditional doctors, to Psychics, but to no avail. My illness was within me. I was the supreme talisman of myself. I had a hidden fear that I will die. The more my parents were worried, the more anxious I was about my situation. My only treatment was prayers, beautiful, hopeful, and positive real life stories of great people, encouraged adventures with friends, travelling to see nice places, and living in a happy and positive environment. My mother never told me of her new found treatment technique, but rather went ahead and pretended to forget that I was very seek. My family turned over a new positive lifestyle by integrating with the church and community life. We attended prayer sessions, observed our community and family devotions, visited many attractive places, and my parents appeared happy everyday, with faithful stories of our God given health, wealth, happiness and long life. I was encouraged to engage in our junior youth activities, it appeared as if my friends were instructed not to mention anything about my pain but rather leave God to take care of my pain. I gradually integrated to the positive environment, and my illness gradually disappeared. It is over thirty-eight years, I had never such felt “fearing to fear death" again in my life. I decided to study in the medical career to find the cure of the disease which impeded my feelings of fearing to die. I am very religious and living a wealth of life. I was married for thirty -two years, and had four beautiful daughters and three handsome boys. My husband transitioned to Abba Kingdom three years ago, may his perfect soul rest in peace. My children and I are now living in full ecstasy ... LIFE! D., dear, try this positive technique, while following her treatment with joy and happiness. Turn to God. This is a healing prayer revealed by the Manifestation of God "Thy name is my healing, O my God, and remembrance of Thee is my remedy. Nearness to Thee is my hope, and love for Thee is my companion. Thy mercy to me is my healing, and my succour in both this world and the world to come. Thou, verily, art the All-Bountiful, the All- Knowing, and the All-Wise". Baha'u'llah.

From my expeience my suggestion is to have her tested for Celiac Disease, she may be gluten intoleratant. Meaning, she can't eat anything with wheat gluten or wheat in it. If you are at wits end, as I was, try putting her on a gluten free diet. You are just going to have to read labels from here on out. In about a week you should be able to tell the difference and she should feel better quickly if this is her problem. I was tested for everything under the sun, No Chrons, no colitis, no IBS..it turned out to be a gluten intolerance for me. I cramped, had constant diarehha, bloating severe pains in my belly area and lower back. I also was gaining weight because my body went into starvation mode because everything was going straight through me when I ate, but usually people lose weight quickly. I cut the wheat out of my diet and in 3 days there was such a difference I demanded from my gastro to be tested, even though he thought it was not the problem. HA!
Just be aware that if you try this diet she has to consume wheat before being tested, it HAS to be in her system to be detected. There is a blood test that can tell you, but tends to have false negatives. The ONLY way to be 100% sure is for her to have an endoscopy and a biopsy taken of her small intestine. I'm sorry your daughter and family are going through this, but it's better to catch it now. I was stupid and dealt with it for MANY years.
If not gluten intolerance, have her tested for Ulcerative Colitis. My aunt has it and has the same symptoms.
Problem with gastro problems is that many diseases can mimik the other.
Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I'm no professional but it sounds like you should go through with this next test and ask about celias disease also. If that's what it is I have a friend who is like the Queen of celias diet. Let me know and I'll give you her phone number. A lot of times the celias test comes back negative when it's positive. The diet is basically a gluten free diet.

D.,
I have not had this experience myself, but over the years I have talked to several moms who were concerned about their children who complained of severe stomach pain. They couldn't go to school, play, or do any activities. It affected every aspect of their little lives, but the doctors could not find anything wrong. Eventually, both families realized that it was due to stress. The little girl was in 3rd grade when she was experiencing her problems. The little boy was in 2nd grade. It's very difficult when the children are so young and can't be more specific about what type of "hurt" they are experiencing, exactly where it hurts, and possibly narrow the hurt down to certain times of the day or after eating certain foods, etc.
The little girl's mom and dad were having marital problems during her pain. They thought they were hiding their conflict from the children, but Whitney could sense the tension, and it was affecting her health. After the problems were "resolved" her pain stopped immediately.
The little boy in the other family has a type-A personality, and would get extremely stressed out at school if he did not make 100's on every paper and be the best at PE or games or whatever. After this stress was taken away, his pain stopped.
Even though the pain these children were experiencing was brought on by mental or emotional stress, it does not diminish the reality of their pain. They were suffering true, extreme physical pain that could not be taken away with medication or surgery or whatever.
This is just one thing to keep in mind. A couple of other ladies mentioned something similar to this as well.

Others have mentioned Chrone's and other gastro problems. This is a good possibility. My mother-in-law and my husband both have gastro problems. Their pain is severe as well when they eat things they shouldn't. (They don't experience vomiting, though, they have diarrhea).

Others who have responded to you have mentioned possible female problems. Several female members of my family including myself have suffered from endometriosis which is can be a serious problem. If this is a possiblity, PLEASE get it checked out. However, if she hasn't started her period yet, this wouldn't be the problem. Maybe some other female issue?

I will also throw in this comment from personal experience. My children and I love our pediatrician. And when it comes to viruses, simple infections, and stuff, he's right on the mark. However, my children have experienced problems that ended up needing specialists to resolve. If I had not pushed the issue, the pediatrician would have kept "blowing it off". That sounds more uncaring than I mean it, but it took me insisting on him referring a specialist before the problem got resolved.

We will pray for you. Trying to help your children feel better without success is SO frustrating.

Have they checked her gall bladder? That is something else that can cause stomach pain, along with pancreatitis, or even mono, kidney/urinary tract infections, or even possible female organ issues can all cause stomach pain.

Hang in there. From my personal experience, don't let the docs tell you they don't know. Keep pushing until they have an answer that makes sense and fixes the problem.

I had gall bladder issues and the docs here said it was just relfux. I lost 40 pounds until I flew back to the city my parents live and saw the bigger city docs. Using the test results from my previous docs he saw I had sludge and gall stones and knew it was my GB. When I came back home, the docs here still refused to admit it was my GB.

More recently, I woke up form terrible pain and rushed to the ER. I was told it was a kidney infection and I had no stone. 5 minutes later I passed a huge stone that they said I didn't have and felt better.

Don't be afraid to get 2nd opinions, either. Trust your instincts as well.
