My Child Screams in the Car

Since she has been born my 3 month old screams in the car. She often cries so hard that she will throw up multiple times. You name it and I have tried it--music, holding her hands, toys hanging from the car seat handle, etc. We have several trips coming up over the next few months and I don't know how to deal with the constant crying! I am desperate for suggestions, please.

What can I do next?

My son did that and I thought maybe he was car sick. So I would give him meds for an upset stomach and it seemed to work very well.

Okay so obviously a lot of people have gone through this, so know that it is normal and will eventually pass. We did something I thought I would never do and we did it when our oldest was 2 months old. We bought a portable dvd player. We bought these DVDs called "Praise Baby..." like Baby Einstein, but play Christian music with either a woman or kids singing and they show toys, animals, children playing. He was set. Also, with our youngest (now 4 months), our chiropractor told me to replace the foam on our Graco carseat. I bought some at Michael's, traced the basic shape and where the seat belt holes needed to be, cut it out, and put it in under the car seat cover. It has helped our youngest tremendously. He's so happy in it and has never had any problems. Finally, I hang toys on the handle above his car seat (like the handle in the car where you hang dry cleaned clothes, etc.) That always fascinates him:)

I know what you're going through - my 9 month old does the same thing. Makes me crazy! The only thing that I've found that helps is making sure she's not too hot. I know that in my daughter's car seat, she sweats a lot. I put a small fan to where it was blowing right down on her, and that helps a little.

Oh my goodness, we went through the same thing with our youngest. The screams were so insistent I was just sure she was in terrible pain. Everytime we drove my husband had to sit in the back with her and sing, hold a pacifier in her mouth, etc. We bought our eldest daughter a CD walkman to drown out the noise because it was driving her crazy! We spent several months not going anywhere far from home. It sucked.

Eventually she grew out of it. My husband says it was about 6 months before she didn't cry during every car trip.

My DD(7) did the same thing. For us, it turned out that the straps holding her in were too tight! Seems pretty obvious, but I was a new mom, and had never put babies into car seats before. I had interpreted the instructions incorrectly, and once my hubby came home from his 6 week cruise (Navy), he figured it out! Also, she was very upset if I didn't sit in the back seat with her. Sitting in the back made car trips much easier (and faster... I could nurse her without stopping the car). She grew out of this stage when we turned her around and she could see us. I think she felt abandoned back there by herself! My boys (5 & 22 mos.) didn't have that problem, I think b/c they had a sibling or two to entertain them :)
Good Luck!

Hmm, I'm not sure if this would help, but I got seat belt covers for my newborns that rattle and keep them occupied and comfortable. Does she ever get a rash from the seat belt?

my son did the same thing we bought a different car seat hoping it would work, we tried toys and even bought a clip on fan thinking he was getting to hot since he was turned around, nothing worked either,i eventualy even turned him forward facing at about 7mths because i could not take it any longer and then bought him a portable dvd player that has seemed to help alot. my son is now 2 and does alot better in the seat. but now the fight is getting him in the seat. good luck and remember it will get better but then you will have new issues to deal with.
