My Cats Have Fleas!!!!

My cats have fleas. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal. Frontline, vacuuming and some powder for the carpets.. but... I'm pregnant and wondering what I can do. I know that there are some plants that ants won't get near. Is there something like that for fleas? Or any suggestions would be appreciated. Keeping my cats indoors is not an option they will loose their mind and so will I!

So What Happened?

I will get some frontline and get someone else to put it on. My husband is out at sea. I found one flea on me so I hope that is the only thing that I need to do the trick... Thanks for all the advice! W.

I would call a Petco and see if they have a grooming service that handles cats with fleas. I would also check with a rug cleaning service and see if they offer anything for fleas in the carpet and question on safety because you're pregnant.

I love knitting as well. I don't get nearly enough time for it, but I steal time whenever I can. It is my therapy in a busy, crazy world.

There is a brand called nature's guardian that protects against fleas and ticks. I think that we got it from Wal-mart. They make carpet spray too

Frontline really works well. I would have your cat treated (washed/flea bathed professionally) then have the Vet do Frontline on your pet. It worked wonderfully for us!

Good luck

Hello W., I would reccomend Frontline, just have someone else apply it and I would not touch the cats for approx 4 hours after application. The frontline works it way into the skin layer so after approx 4 hours(make sure the area that it was applied at is dry also) You can touch the cat and it is safe. As for your carpets I would not recommend anything. The frontline will work and get ride of all the fleas, because as they bit the cat they will die, but it will take longer to get rid of them inside your house. Just be patient and make sure you apply the frontline every 4 weeks for at least 4-6 months and then the fleas will dissappear. After the fleas are gone make sure you still apply the frontline, but you can relax and apply every 6weeks to save some money. The reason why they tell you to apply every 4 weeks is because after 4 weeks the effiency drops below 90%, but it still works. Also as always check with you ob/gyn to see what they think. I hope this helps. I would not recommend anything that you purchase in the store. They way the frontline works is on the nervous system of the fleas, the smaller the animal the more nerve receptors they have. Cats are more sensitive then dogs and I have seen many cats have bad reactions to they over the counter products. There is a reason why they are cheaper then the Vet products. I STRONGLY RECCOMEND only using products from you vet.

Is Frontline something you get from your vet? Stuff I buy in the store never works, but the kind I get from my vet always does the trick, and I live in the country with 5 dogs & 2 cats. P. B.

I am always trying to find the least chemical option, and when I was pregnant I was even more nervous about any kind of chemicals in the house. These are some things we have tried when our pets have gotten fleas.
For getting rid of them in the house there is a product we used called Deflea, http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=10875, you can get it at pet co as well, and it worked wonders for us. I think it says you might have to re apply 2 weeks or so later to make sure you got all the eggs, but we have only ever done one application.
If your cats will do it, try sprinkling garlic powder on their food. This is a natural flea repellant, you can google ways to sneak it in their diet if they dont like the garlic powder.
I dont see why you couldnt use this on your cats, I havent used it on our current cat who is for the moment an indoor kitty, but we use this with great results on our dog. Its an insect repellant that works on fleas, ticks, mostquitos and biting flies. http://petadorestore.com/product_info.php?cPath=202&p... I got it at a local tack store.
Good Luck!

besides everyone elses ideas, I would also suggest a bug bombing of the house..Unfortunately once you have fleas it is very hard to control them due to their quick reproducing period. I had them from my cats, and I had to bomb the whole house..it got rid of them right away. I don't have them anymore, and I know have frontline and bath my cats monthly in a flea dip.

OMG!! You can't bug-bomb the house if you're pregnant! I've used 20 Mule Team Borax with wonderful results. I even put it on the furniture and my matress when I went away for a weekend. Anything that wasn't hard. I got home and vaccumed up all the borax and the fleas. Vaccuuming can be tricky too while you're pregnant. Leave the windows open, wear a mask and use an allergy-filter. By leaving the Borax on the carpet in the shared apartement hallway I helped prevent additional infestations from neighbor cats. Mine's an indoor kitty. (& he refused to eat the garlic powder.)
Keep in mind that 90% of the fleas in your house are on your cats. Can you have someone else watch your cats for a couple days & treat them with frontline. Then you can move the cats back into a flea free home and not have to worry about petting them.
I hope you find something that you can feel comfortable with.
Good Luck,
C.

I'm a big advocate of using something eco-friendly or natural to solve everyday problems! Melaleuca oil is a natural flea & lice repellant. It's a wonderful product filled with so many benefits. With you being pregnant, it would be a great solution. You can go to saferforyourhome.com or my website collins.advancingwithus.com for more information. Let me know if I can help in any way!

Don't forget that you should have a piece of flea collar in your vacuum bag as well! All animals should be treated with the frontline (you don't mention how many cats you have), and make sure the fur is parted and it is applied to the skin.

Last fall I made my cat a pillow bed filled with sweet fern, tansy, wormwood, sweet annie, and mint (any variety). Her fur has smelled wonderful all winter and bless her, she hasn't brought any bugs home this season yet.

dont use anything in the house that you can end up with on your skin NO poeder, NO sprays. you can have someone else put frontline on the cats. do it at night so this way they dont get in on you and make sure they are either put in a room for the first 24 hours or you are away from them for this first night if you do it like 8pm by 8am its fine for them to be loose again.

You can try white vinegar and continue vacuuming daily to get the ones that jump off. Spray the vinegar on anything it doesn't hurt furniture or carpting.

I hate to suggest chemicals, but you are going to have to bomb...and vacuum all the time (at least twice a day) even after treating the house it will take a few weeks for the fleas to completely go away.. We had an infestation from sand in our driveway last summer...it was brutal. We tried everything! The most effective thing was vacuuming all the time (make sure that you remove the bag and seal it each time, or they will just jump out again... Also, as the fleas numbers go down, some family members will still be bothered for a while..have faith though! There are some natural treatments for the area outside your home, I would recommend using them to combat future infestations.

Hi W.,
My family lived in Florida for about 5 years. Fleas and roaches are a huge problem down there. I see that a few people suggested 20 Mule Team Borax. That works perfectly except it has to get into the insect. Both fleas and roaches have a waxy exoskelaton to get through. To accomplish this add diatomaceous earth to the borax. You can find it in a pool supply store, it is used in the filtering system. The diatomaceous earth scratches the shell of the insect allowing the borax entry and in a few days there will be no more fleas. Normal vacuuming will pick up this mix a little at a time so it needs to be reapplied about once a year. I get an allergic reaction to the flea bites but never had any problems while I was pregnant nor did my daughter have any problems crawling on the carpet that had been treated.
Good luck with your pregnancy, speedy delivery and healthy baby.
