My Calves Itch at Night-help!

For about 3 weeks now, when I go to bed or begin to relax, my calves start itching like crazy. Sometimes my thighs will itch as well. I noticed brusing from itching so hard. I was thinking it might be RLS, but it doesn't keep me up at night and my legs don't feel the urge to move. Has anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So, the itching went away. I have no idea what it was, but thanks for the awesome advise!

I feel you with this. I have thyorid problems that help cause my skin to be really dry and ichy. I have woke up with bruses that cover both legs from thigh to ancle and I have to wear pants so know one sees them and think that I got beat up or something. I have found that the medicated Gold bond lotion works really good and it isn't to expencive. I hope that helps

I had this happen and it was such a stupid thing but maybe it is the same for you . . . I had an allergic reaction to a lotion I was using. It was so long ago I don't remember what it was ...I remember it was winter time and once I stopped using it the itching went away after a day or two. If I remember the lotion didn't bother me on my arms or hands only my legs and mainly on my calves. Hope you figure it out, it drove me crazy for a couple of weeks.

my mom and I both get this. my skin is a little sensitive, but nothing major. we both think it's linked to anxiety since we use different products and it's on an isolated area of the body. I also have had some really annoying bouts with RLS so who knows they might be related? Sometimes putting a hot compress on helps with the itching and of course, hydrocortisone cream. I've even resulted to taking a benadryl at times and that helps too. Hope you get some relief! :(

R.,

Years ago I had more of a pins and needles feeling in my calves at night. It turned out to be a pottassium deficiency and I would eat a banana before I went to be. It helped but I don't know if this is the same since yours is more of an itch.

Just putting my two cents in,

Evelyn

i had the same issue and still happens to me every once in a while. my skin would bruise as well and at times my skin would itch so bad that my skin would break from scratching so much, all i could suggest is buying a large tube of hydrocrotisone cream and applying it to the area that you will be itching before you go to bed, only thing is, dont rub in completely. hope this helps

Some thoughts:
1. Perhaps you are experiencing circulation problems.
2. Perhaps it is a form of eczema (whenever I wear tight pants, my waist line gets irritated, the more I scratch the worse it gets) Maybe you are wearing pants or tight hose that is irritating the area. Try slapping calves rather than scratching.
3. If I go out in cool/cold weather, my legs will itch, it is from poor circulation.

Hi R.,
We keep Sarna lotion on hand for this (over the counter medicated anti-itch lotion --powerful, but a bit smelly). I'm very attentive to lotioning up more than normal during the winter, but if that's not enough, I grab my Sarna and use it nightly.
Also, have you had your LFT's (liver function blood test) checked? Itching is a symptom that, if it persists, may be worth the simple blood test to check your liver #'s over. I'm only mentioning it b/c you said you'll scratch the itch so much that you bruise. That's a pretty intense itch and unrelenting itching is a known symptom of a particular liver issue. I hope, though, that you've found relief already.
Take care,
M. B
