My Baby Is SCREAMING One Hour After Eating???

My 7 week old daughter screams in pain approximately one hour after her feedings, more previlantly in the evenings. Does this sound like colic? She takes 4-5 ounces of Similac Sensitive formula (with a couple drops of Mylicon in her bottle) every 3 hours and is also taking AXID for acid reflux. She seems to only be content when she is sleeping! :( It breaks my heart to hear her in so much pain! Do you think switching her formula might be the way to go? Any advice on this would be most appreciated!

Thanks!!! :)

I went through this with both my children and there pediatrician claimed they both had colic. We ended up using Enfamil Nutramigen (spelling?). It is super expensive, but was well worth it. She will need time to adjust to it-but seemed to do the trick for us. Good luck with everthing-have also heard that the peak of crying subsides just after they are three months. My son loved to be held and in bjorn carrier-this helped too.

I wouldn't jump to changing her formula right away, has she already been diagnosed with reflux? Has she had all of the appropriate test for these symptoms. If she has not usually they will order an upper GI. Good Luck! LisaM

anyway: get to a ped GI now. screaming is NOT normal & you just said she has reflux, so it's not colic.

her axid dose may not be high enough.
you most certainly can try 'alternative' methods like a chiropractor and craneal sacral massage, but ME, I believe in Western Medicine along with alternative therapies. see link above...

go to the pharmacist w/ a big smile and ask her/him to please humour you by looking up the pediatric axid dose on her/his 'ipharmacist.' this is the electronic device they use to check dosing. Axid is VERY weight sensitive & I BET her dose can be increased...

are her stool normal? if they're hard like pebbles or watery (sometimes a watery diaper is ok, but not frequently)then it might be her formula. TELL the ped you want the diaper tested for what's called 'occult' blood (this is blood that you cannot see w/ your eye), just in case. anyway if she's straining to poop, grunts and has foul-smelling gas- this all can be signs it's her 'diet.' then you'd switch to alimentum or nutrimigen and give the new formula a good 2 weeks. each change you make you must give 2 weeks for it to really get into the body's system.

get to a ped Gi

Hi K.,
This is almost for sure colic. 3 of my 4 children had it and it usually hits them in the evening. Mylicon didn't work for them, but I used the anise tea. I know some moms here on the site, don't agree with it. It's a natural remedy, but it worked wonderfully on my children and helps soothe them and take away that pain in the stomach and intestines and helps them to sleep better. You could get the tea bags to boil or I used to buy the star anise(it's a seed pod) and boil just one or 2 in about 2 cups of water and give them 1 or 2 dropper fulls when it cooled down.
Hope this helps!
Take care,
V.

Check into adding probiotics to her bottle. The Dr. may not know anything about probiotics since they are not a prescribed drug. You may do better with a health food store. Probiotics are necessary for life. It saved my oldest daughter's life when she was an infant!

Yes, switch formulas. If your doctor is not on top of this, switch doctors. Let me know what happens!

I went through that with my son and kept being told it was just colic. I knew there had to be a reason that he started doing that around 3 weeks old. Finally, he was about 9 weeks old and started having blood in his stool, so the doctor recommend that I take him to a specialist. She figured he had some sort of allergy, and recommended that I switch him from breast milk to a very expensive, and horrible tasting formula. The specialist confirmed that it probably was an allergy, and we figured it was a dairy allergy. Although, he was only on breast milk, the dairy I was consuming was enough to cause him to have an allergic response. It took about 3 weeks of me being completely off dairy before his screaming stopped. So, it could be an allergic response to that formula. My son's dairy allergy finally went away around 1 yr old.

Hi there. My baby had the same thing and it turned out she was highly allergic to dairy. We ended up putting her on isomil(similac brand soy formula) and she did great. We switched her to the soy on our doctors advice (after trying all the other types, lactose free etc...)she did better within a few days. Also other signs of allergy are excema and green poop! Good luck!

I feel your pain! Sounds like you have a colicky baby on your hands. My son will be 3 in a few months, but did the same thing as you decribed in your post. We switched him to the Similac Soy Formula (pink can) and we also started using rice cereal in his formula to thicken it up. I can't remember exactly how old he was when we started the rice cereal, but it definately helped. Good luck!

That definitely sounds like colic. My son suffered from acid reflux becuase I stopped breastfeeding and gave him formula along with mylicon. The mylicon started the colics. At 6 pm he would begin screaming and screaming until I finally found a method to soothe him.You should stop the mylicon, it constipates them, and try breastfeeding. I know it's a little painful, but in the long run it will benefit you and your babygirl. If the screams continue, try turning on a blowdryer or vaccume in a room for 20 mins while holding her belly firmly. The noise will soothe her to sleep.

I saw a tv special (Medical Mystry) about a baby who puke every meal and screamed in pain. They tried every formula and had him tested for allergies. NO avail til they found a peds gastroloist. It turned out he has a rare condition and can't have things like dairy, eggs, and other stuff.

Try another formula first and then do the test at the doctors. Stick to your gut, if you think something is wrong, your probably right.

It is getting more and more common that many kids are allergic to stuff like dairy, wheat, and etc.

Hello K.! I have a 2 year old daughter and she wasn't colic although I used to have the same problem. I switched her to Goodstart for sensitive bellies so you should be good on your formula in my opinion. I am not sure what bottles you have her on but when I was pregnant I didn't want a complicated bottle with a 100 pieces but when she was born and I was having issues with her after eating I switched to the VentAir bottles. I thought I had the crankiest baby ever, lol, but after I switched bottles and formula her mood took a 180 degree turn. I hope this helps. Like I said she wasn't colic so that too might be the problem. I don't know much about that.

Given that you know she has reflux I would start with that first. Have you been seen by a pediatric GI specialist? If not, that would be first. It is common for babies to be "colicky" in the evening hours. Try things like wearing her in a sling so she is close. Try different positions in the sling to see what might comfort her the best. A mayawrap or a moby would be good choices for one so little and they are very useful as baby grows.

The AXID made my daughters reflux worse. I used to keep her upright for an hour after feedings, either holding her or in her fisher price swing that went side to side instead of front to back, and that helped alot. We also tried several formulas and found that she had to have one without ARA/DHA, she just couldn't digest it.

I would strongly suggest seeing a gastroenterologist. I had a great one for my son when he was tiny. (Email me if you want his name.)

We had to use Reglan as well as Zantac. Axid has a strong peppermint flavoring which can make the reflux even worse so we quickly got off that one.

I would not switch formulas prior to seeing the doctor and getting on better medication. If you start changing too much at once you won't have any idea what is really working or not, especially when the meds aren't controlling things.

Also, at 7 weeks post partum it's not too late to induce lactation. Breast milk is the easiest thing to digest for a baby with this condition. If possible, I would strongly consider relactating and getting the baby on breastmilk.
