I have my baby can read. They say to watch it twice a day and its only like 20 min. so they are not watching aon of tv. I havent been consistent with it, so i dont know how the full potential but my dd was learning some words. I hate having my 2 year old sit in front of the tv, but when i need a little bit of time to do something and some quiet, it keeps her occupied and is educational. I havent heard of the other one.

If you are going to spend some money on dvds, then look into Signing Time through Two Little Hands Productions. You and your children can learn signing and you both will be gaining a second language.

I am a teacher and I think kids need to be kids. Don't our little ones already have a ton to learn that is appropriate to them without adding in more for them to learn before they are really ready.

Just spend time playing with letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and read to your child daily. This love of playing and reading will lean them toward reading at an earlier age. They can start reading at 4 or 5 and still be ahead of the game. It is much more appropriate to teach children when they are ready to learn a concept. There is way too much for them to learn as it is.

Gaaah-lee! My Mom bought us "your baby can read" for our son and he really likes it! We do NOT show the videos as much as they recommend; however, he loves to look at the books and he is learning some words. They also have unique flashcards that help him associate pictures with the words. He is having fun and learning things as well. He is 3 years old. If you are going to show your kid videos of movies such as Cars, etc... then why wouldn't you show your kid educational DVD's? My son loves it.. he asks to watch "Baby Video" and I think it's great that he's learning. I don't know how much this cost my Mom, and so maybe I wouldn't have bought it depending on the price... but anyway, I think it's a quality product and we like it. ALSO several of the responses below assume that the Moms are just parking the kid in front of the TV all the time... it's totally not true! The books and flashcards are totally interactive with mom and child...also I read to my son several books throughout the day and he loves them. This program is of course not a REPLACEMENT for good parenting and teaching, but a helpful TOOL to assist you in teaching your child!

There have been lots of posts on here about My Baby Can Read. Mostly all negative. A good friend of mine bought into it, and was appalled at how much it encourages you to sit your baby in front of a TV. She said it was a total waste of money. Your time would be better spent just reading to your baby and enjoying him/her. I don't have any info on the other one you mention. But if it is anything like MBCR I would stay far away from it.

I have looked into both of these programs...a lot. I have five children...and am i hands on mom. My oldest is 11, followed by 9, 8, and 4 and 2. I wish i had known about programs like this when my first three were toddlers. I had my four and two year old watch some sample videos of each program, and it was totally clear that the Monkisee dvd is the winner. In fact, for several days following, they would walk around singing the theme song after only seeing clips of the dvd online...they were also totally focused on it. When i showed them clips of the Your Baby Can Read..they asked to "watch the monkey one again". If i am being totally honest, i was almost positive that the Your Baby Can Read program would be the winner for me, but the more i read, the more negative comments i found from parents about this program. I did not, however, find much negative at all about the Monkisee program. I decided to go with the Monkisee program, and feel pretty confident that it was the right choice for us. Hopefully this was somewhat helpful :)

I see that this is not a very new question, but I noticed that no one said anything about MonkiSee. We did try the Your Baby Can Read videos, but I found that my baby enjoyed MonkiSee better. If you do own the Your Baby Can Read kit and want to try out MonkiSee too, the two programs work nicely together. I mixed the flash cards from both programs, and now have a nice collection of words to show to my baby. Hope this helps :)

My sister and her bf (who live rent and utility free with my parents and can't pay all of their own car, cell, etc bills because they go out too much) but they do not use it. My niece can read dog and that is as far as they got. I have my kids count buses, pick colors of VW punch buggies, look for letters on signs when we are stopped in the car, etc. My kids listen to the TV enough that they don't need to sit down in front of it to learn. It's so fun to do math and reading with them ALL the time!! I would defnitely say to not waste your money on either and just do things with them :).

Here is a link to a website that talks about programs like Your Baby Can Read and why it is harmful to children. As an educator myself, I strongly encourage parents to stay away from programs like these. It is much more beneficial to interact with your child than to let a dvd do the teaching.

I didn't see anyone respond to the fact that these are teaching your child to read by memorizing words. This will be detrimental to them when they start school. Kids need to learn phonics and not sight reading. Memorizing words does not teach them to be able to decode new words, only to read the words they have already learned. My son learned to read on his own (I wasn't trying to teach him) by age four, just from reading to him all the time. Unfortunately, when he started Kindergarten, since he could already read, he didn't really master phonics. This meant that he was never very good at decoding new words. He is now 15 and does not enjoy reading. My younger son didn't learn to read until he was in Kindergarten and now at age 11, he LOVES to read. Don't know if that is what made the difference or not. Just something to consider.
