My 7 Month Old Doesn't like the Baby Food Meat.

My pediatrician suggested that we start my son on meats this month. I tried the beachnut beef broth and chicken- even the gerber smooth meat- and he gags on it. (I can't say I blame him it tastes pretty nasty to me.) I quit giving it to him today cause it seemed to make him very uncomfortable! Any suggestions on making my own "meat" - has anyone else had this situation?
Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much to everyone who replied. I got LOTS of great ideas. I tried the mixed meat and veggie baby food and he really liked it- also tonight I mashed up a vienna sausage really good and mixed it with vegetable soup. He LOVED it. I plan to try the other ideas the next time I cook. I really appreciate everyone's help!

I don't believe in baby food meats LOL. I refuse to feed my baby something I won't taste myself...and I am not willing to taste that pureed and jarred 'meat'. So I feed my 10 month old son some of whatever we are eating. I just cut/mash it up small enough so he can't choke and that's that.

Meat baby food is nasty. I tried it when my son was 7 months, and it didn't even taste like food to me. I never fed it to him. Ground turkey is easy and already bite size, buy a whole chicken and boil it then the meat is easy to get off the bone. I just buy a roasted chicken from walmart they're cheap n juicy I just give my son pieces and he loved it. Still does. I gave him pieces of chicken along with a jar of veggies. At 10 months I started giving him the graduates pasta for protein, and pieces of deli meat, string cheese, yogurt(8 months).

I could never get any of my 3 kids to eat babyfood at all. It smells and it tastes nasty. I started my kids on table food. I would give them what we would eat. Jus break it up smaller for them to eat it. U can start off with spigetti with meat sauce and just smash the best u can and I bet he will eat that alot better then the babyfood. I hope this can help u out some.

Of course, you want your babies to get proper nutrition, but it's also important to pay attention to what your baby doesn't like. Sometimes it's for good, healthy reason that your baby will spit certain things out. One of my little sweeties (2 and one-half yo) doesn't care for meat at all. We make sure that she gets her protein from other foods. Don't force the meat.

I had the same situation. I mixed the baby food meat with a fruit or vegetable. My son is 8 months and he is on the No. 2 foods, now and he will eat the meat mixtures (i.e. turkey and sweet potatoes, chicken and vegetables). Good Luck!

We use either steak meat or ground beef with my son. The steak gets cooked (grilled) first and then I scrape it with a sharp knife. This gets the essence of the meat and leaves behind any large fibers they might choke on. For the ground beef, I just chop it as small as possible when browning it.

My son doesn't care for meat by itself. I don't particularly care for it myself :-) We do stir-fry and casseroles a lot. So after scraping or browning, I'll add some to his bowl (at the table) and mix it up well so he doesn't really taste the meat that much, but still gets the benefits of that kind of protein.

Also, you can boil/microwave some veggies with/in beef/chicken broth...just an idea

hi K.
since he's being picky about food and all meats from baby foods, attemp to boil chicken and after it finishes cooking blend it or use a food processor. mix it with a broth and make it so small with a little flavor. also with food like ground turkey, add some broth or water after cooking and blend it with peas or whatever he likes. my son was always wanting green beans from gerber. i hope all works for you. good luck.

K.,

Give that baby some meat you would eat..not that nasty baby food. Give him some vienna sausages (get your spoon or fork and mash it real fine), or hamburger meat w/gravy (mash the meat up real fine and mix it in the gracy). I guarantee he'll love that. Infants really need a taste of the real thang, not that other mess.

Try it.

I have never made baby food before but I did have trouble with my daughter eating meats. It was because it was a different feeling in her mouth The change from just eating cereal. So I started mixing it with her favorite fruit. 2 spoons of fruit to 1 spoon of meat. The fruit is not as "gritty" feeling as the meat. You will have another change when he starts feeding himself. Children like to feel everything. They like to play in the mashed potatoes but, they will eat the green beans. Keep trying he will make the change.

I quickly gave up on the jarred foods with my son. We have a VitaMix, and used that to make all of his food. It has got to be one of the greatest machines in our kitchen! It will virtually liquify meat when you add water. Unfortunately, they are a wee bit expensive.
I've heard of some people using the Magic Bullet to puree table food for babies. 7 months might be a bit young to go straight to table food, although I've seen it happen.
The other thing is, there are the combo meats with things like apples & ham. Babies seem to all love that one. (I worked in an infant room for 3 years!)
Sounds like you are doing a great job trying to find solutions! Good luck!
