My 5 Year Old Having Trouble Walking

Hello Everyone!

My son caught the flu 4 days ago and is recovering. But yesterday he woke up having trouble walking. He says it hurts on the shins and when I rub them he laughs. It must feel tingly for him. He has had growing pains before during the night, but I've never seen him have them this long. Has anyone heard of a virus that affects the legs? I'm wondering if it's related to the virus. He has no fever and his legs look normal.

Thank you,

A. ( Liam's mom)

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your input! The earliest appointment they had for my son was at 2:30 today. I called the nurse to get advice while waiting around, but the wait was over 2 hours. When the nurse finally called back, Liam was walking almost normal again. Thank God! The nurse said to continue massaging his leg and to keep an eye on it. She thinks he had growing pains that lasted a little longer than usual.
He has no fever, he's eating, everything is normal. Thanks again, ladies!

There is no point in guessing.

Yes, please get him to his pediatrician, there's complications from the flu that it could be.

Immediate visit to doctor. No fooling. There are a couple of things this could be and none of them are to be taken lightly. Call your pediatrician.

Now.

My brother had this after the flu (20 years ago). The virus somehow got into his leg muscles or something and he had trouble walking for several weeks. I think he was put on anti inflammatory medicine to ensure the internal swelling didn't damage anything. Take your son to the pedi and get him checked out!

My son had a pretty strong virus over a year ago that hurt his legs and he had trouble walking. I immediately thought Lyme disease so I had him tested but he was negative. I would ask your pediatrician, but yes, this can happen. The other moms are over reacting a little though, probably nothing to freak out about.
