My 4 Year Is Potty Trained and Keeps Getting a Rash in Between His Cheeks

My 4 year has been potty trained for about 6 months and in the last 2 months he keeps having "wet farts" and then in a matter of an hour (as he doesn't tell me when it exactly happens, I'm guessing it isn't enough for him to feel) he gets a horrible rash in between his little cheeks and around his anus. I put diaper rash cream on it and then put him in a pull up. It clears up over the next several hours. I just don't know why it keeps happeneing and how to stop him from getting a rash. It isn't from toliet paper as we use flushable wipes and since he is a boy he doesn't wipe everytime. Has anyone else experience this or have any ideas as to how I can help him.

What can I do next?

I had this problem with my daughter. She had a sensitivity to orange juice and tomatoe sauce. And the white diaper ointment always cleared it up. As a preventitive put clear a and d ointment on his butt crack(Sorry about that!). Meanwhile think about what he ate and see if there is a pattern.

Could be something he eats that's acidic or that he's sensitive to. Could be the wipes, or simply the fact that the poop stays in contact with his skin for awhile.

But if he's not noticing the wet farts, I'd check very carefully to make sure he's not having a go-round with encopresis. Here's one link of many: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

The fact that he doesn't seem to notice passing any stool is what makes me wonder about this. That's one of the more common signs of encopresis.

He may not be wiping well in the first place. My daughter is 4 now, has been potty trained since 2 and 11 months, and I still wipe her after #2. I finally gave her the OK to start practicing doing this herself. Most children just cannot do this very well, their arms are not long enough to do a good job. We use flushable wipes or baby wipes to do the job usually.

Are you sure the wipes aren't causing the problem? Try switching him to toilet paper for a week or so and see if the problem continues.

Also, pay attention to what he's eating and see if there is a pattern to it... like a few hours before the rash appears he always has ____ or ____.

Good luck,
T.

Its too moist. That's why its irritating him. The wipes maybe causing the problem since its not "dry". I've had the same thing happen and it hurts! Poor guy! Try staying on it and keep it dry as possible that's the only thing that helped me!

Hi D., my simple suggestion is to keep the area washed and dry. After he has little accidents, after he evacuates or throughout the day make him sit on the sink ( I bet you don't have a bidet), wash it, dry it, and apply a very little amount of diaper rash cream on it....I don't think, because he is a boy, he should be dispensed from wipe everytime.

He obviously has very sensitive skin. My suggestion would be to keep vaseline on him after he goes to the rest room just put some on, this should keep a barrier from the irritants so that he will not get a rash. I'm sure he will grow out of this!

it could be the wipes..try another brand..also, it could be the wet farts..make sure he wipes after that occurs..a little diaper cream wouldn't hurt.

Poor guy :-(
Maybe check his booty every time you notice him toot? I know he's not going to tell you every fart he has, but try to listen closely? Lol, idk... Good luck mama :-)

Here's a cream I use on my youngest and if you use it daily, it can help prevent a rash and when used on a rash it can help clear it up within an hour. It's called Earth Mama Angel Baby Angel Baby Bottom Balm. It has natural ingredients in it and I feel very safe using it on my kids daily. I think it is better than diaper rash cream and it doesn't stain clothes like diaper rash cream can. We recently potty trained my 2 1/2 year old and sometimes she doesn't wipe really well at school so she gets a little red in the area and after bath each night when I apply just the tiniest amount (a little goes a long way) her skin is totally fine within an hour. I used to buy is for around $15 for a 2-ounce jar but now get it on autodelivery from amazon.com for less than $10. A jar lasts us about 3 to 4 months. Here's a link to the product on amazon and you can read reviews from other mom's as well.
