When you say you "found" a home remedy,
does that mean you tried some other remedies before you found this one?
Please do not give an infant anything
other than mommy's milk or formula or what a doctor recommends.
You took a very grave risk by doing this.
If she's not coughing any more, good.
But, as another mom said, whooping cough is out there
and children are vulnerable.

HIGH RISK ACTIVITY!!!

A., I've been an amateur but very involved student of herbs for decades, and I must warn you, you are risking the health of your baby. This is urgent. As beneficial as eucalyptus oil and other strong aromatics are for some people and for some conditions, there are potentially serious side effects.

No responsible alternative medical person would recommend this tea be taken by a child under at least 6 years. Nor should it be used by pregnant or nursing women because of possible harm to the baby. It is toxic and can quickly overload the kidneys and liver. It can cause other nasty side effects as well, from stomach upset to allergic reactions that make breathing worse.

PLEASE do your homework; google terms like eucalyptus tea side effects, or safety. Read all the warnings. Be aware that you are putting your child at risk. Here are two such sites _ please read them all the way through: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/eucalyptus-000241.htm
and http://www.crazyfortea.com/eucalyptusherb.html

Plus your daughter might actually need some other form of treatment depending on what underlying condition or illness is causing the cough. Delaying this is potentially allowing the problem to become worse.

Not to scare you, but I want to make sure you know that Whooping Cough is at a all time high right now in the United States. I would make sure that your baby did not have something more serious.

Are you a doctor or a nurse? Was your grandmother in the medical field and is she qualified to say for definitely sure that it isn't Whooping Cough? I would never give my child this home remedy and just assume this wasn't something more serious. This is VERY irresponsible to share this mixture with other parents saying it solved your child's issues.

This is a dangerous experiement for a baby. Please see a doctor ASAP. I am not sure I would trust you that it is not pertussis unless you had her tested, given your willingness to give your baby something other than breast milk or formula at this stage in her very young life, which (prescribed medications exluded) runs counter to every instruction I have ever heard for a baby so small with out the careful oversight of a doctor. Your grandmother meant well, but the difference between infant mortality now, and infant mortality when your grandmother was raising babies has changed, and modern medical care is one reason.

I'm not trying to upset the apple cart, but I would really caution you about taking an herbal remedy on such a young baby especially for something like a phlemy cough. My son had what I thought was just a cough at 6 weeks. I went to the dr, because I am a worrier. I'm glad I did. It turned out to be RSV which is a potentially dangerous respiratory infection. We were lucky, we caught it early enough where he didn't have to be hospitalized. My friends were not lucky. Their infant had to be hospitalized for 4 days!

i agree with other mommas. you need to check with your pedi about using home remedys. did you know that honey can be dangerouse to babies? it has a bacteria in it that adults can handle but babies under three should not have. just because its natural dosent mean its safe...think posion ivy its natural but i sure dont want to be near it. good luck. hope it still a safe solution but check first....just a phone call please. btw why did you post this ??????

Hey A.... Seriously, you're not suppose to give an infant under the age of 12 months anything other than breast milk or formula. Their kidneys are not mature enough to process water (or juice) out of their system... Giving them water (including an herbal tea) can cause "water intoxication" which is the primary reason for seizures in an otherwise healthy baby. No joke. PLEASE DON'T DO THIS.

"Giving an infant additional water to drink causes infant water intoxication by diluting the sodium in babies blood and flushing it out of babies body. That reduces the electrolytes in the babies body, altering brain activity, causing seizures to occur in the otherwise healthy infant."
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/931669/infant_wa...

"The most common victim of water intoxication is an infant three to six months old who is brought to the emergency room either seizing or not breathing. The infants blood is too dilute. The initial treatment is intravenous solutions with a high concentration of salts. Sometimes the infant will spontaneously urinate large quantities of dilute urine to re-establish the normal salt concentrations in the blood. There is a risk of serious problems and even death from water intoxication."

FYI, my daughter was extremely congested as an infant. I once joked to her pedi that she was born congested... It turns out she has an allergy to cows milk protein, which caused her congestion. I suggest you cut out all sources of dairy from the baby's diet. If she is being breast feed, then the mother should cut all sources of cows milk from her diet (read labels; look for milk, butter, casein, whey) or if she is formula feed, put her on a formula that is not milk-based.

Always nice to get simple advice. Don't know about the kiddos, but I might use it on myslf. :)

If you are looking for another very very simple and 100% safe "remedy," open the freezer. Hold the baby in front of the open freezer for a few minutes. Sometimes, a cough is made worse by inflammation in the airways. The cold air will help just enough to let the baby fall asleep. Or you can go outside, if it's January.

My grandmother also gave all of her children and grandchildren that tea and it gave us a speedy recovery.. I was reading the response to this post from many of you and can't help but wonder how brain washed one can be! If anything the side effects from natural organically grown herbs is way less dangerous then what the doctors prescribe now a days.. my kids all have asthma and everytime I take them the doctors prescribe "steroids", antibiotics and Ibuprophen! Do you know how much harm and dependency this "drugs" create!!? Whereas natural herbs and remedies help heal the body and boost up natural defenses! (Immune system) I have many friends with PHD who recommend my children not take "drugs" for every little thing! So when you ask someone to educate themselves about side effects I recommend YOU be the one further studying "todays doctors drug of choice" side effects!

With a three month old, you should really go see your pediatritian. Ther are many homeopathic remedies that are safe for babies, however they are packaged with dosages right there on the label, plus you need to know what is going on with the child first so you can give the right remedy. Also, in general, please be very careful giving eucalyptus and chamomile, especially children. So many people are very allergic to either of the plants and just don't know it, so if you want to try herbal remedies, start with a very diluted amount, and go from there after seeing that there are no reactions. Herbal remedies are wonderful, they work! We use them all the time and manage to avoid the doctor visits, and the expense, and the excessive drugs that go along with it.

A good remedy for my babies when they were coughing was to sit in the bathroom with them with the hot shower running. I got extremely hot and sweaty, and they were slippery little things, but it worked. I saw it when I watched "Terms of Endearment" years and years ago.
