My 2.5 Year Old Complained of Noise in Ears

I am afraid my daughter Lily is having ear issues. She doesn't like loud noises. In fact, it appears that she has a true fear of them. She runs when we flush the potty, get out the vacuum cleaner, etc. Plus, she has mentioned that she has a sound in her ears. She'll say "I hear 'eeeeeeeee' in my ears, Mama". My ears ring sometimes. Is this normal for a 2.5 year old? Is the fear of loud noises a symptom of a hearing issue? She likes to scream at the top of her lungs--could this be the cause? She has a huge vocabulary, hears people on the telephone, and acts like she can hear me (except when I'm asking her to pick up her toys or brush her teeth, etc.) Should I schedule a dr. visit? Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

My son, 9, responded similarly to loud noises and could detect the slightest sounds. I homeschool in part because the fire and tornado drills were terrifying to him. We finally saw an audiologist in OKC who sees kids--Dr. Larry Engelman. He tested my son and discovered that his hearing is off the charts good, but his ability to understand/filter what he hears is not good at all--60% in one ear and 0% in the other. This auditory processing problem made school really difficult--and explained why he either didn't respond to correction or responded inappropriately.

It does indeed sound like your daughter has tinnitus. I'm right there with her. I'm a 41 year old mom of three and I've had a ringing in my ears for as long as I can remember. You do learn to live with it and work around it. *L* Sometimes mine even lulls me to sleep! The biggest problem I've encountered is that it drowns out low frequency and soft sounds. That is very frustrating. Since tinnitus doesn't show up on hearing tests though, I've never qualified for a hearing aid to help. They do have the OTC ones now that look like a little bluetooth though.

Best wishes and good luck.

It sounds like normal stuff, about the fear and dislike of loud noises. However, the eeeee sound sounds like tinnitis.

I do remember that there are ways to relieve the symptom, but i cna't remember. Homeopathics, for one, I'm pretty sure. I'll try to remember and get back to you.

As a preschooler, one of my kids often complained of ringing in her ears. The ear test - where they blow the puff of air in and it is suppose to make a bell shaped graph - never made the right shape for her. The drs said that meant fluid in her ears. They put her on allergy meds (made her sleepy but didn't change the ear) and tried other things. Finally sent her to an ear specialist. Where the puff test still didn't look correct. He did a hearing test, which she passed just fine. So his response was, if she can hear perfectly fine, why do you care what the test looks like? She still complained of ringing in her ears at times, mostly at bedtime. She said the same thing "My ears go EEEEEEE." Since she was healthy with good hearing we quit looking for causes. She appears to have outgrown it, as I haven't heard her say that in years. The best the Drs could come up with was that her ear canal is slightly diffent shaped than others causing the funny test results and perhaps the ringing sound. Perhaps growing has allowed that to correct?? Sorry that this isn't very helpful - other than to know your child is not alone in the ringing ears

I had ringing in my ears as a child; it eventually just went away on its own. Good luck.

Make sure you take her to a peditric ear specialist asap. You want to get to the bottom of this as it will hurt her in many ways.
You may also do the same for her eyes to make sure they are okay.
As a child I had scarlet fever in the 2 or 3 grade. Things were different in those days you did not have all the specialist and the gp did everything.
In my sophomore year of high school I had ear problems amd this is when I found out I had lost my right ear completely to a paralyze nerve, plus I had some lost in my left ear.
God Bless

Hi M.,

I'm not sure about the sound that she says that she is hearing, but you might want to take her to an ear doctor just to get some tests run to make sure nothing is wrong.

As for the being scared of loud noises, I would say that it is perfectly normal. My daughter did the same thing at that age and on occasion, she still does. She is now 4 1/2 and she covered her ears in a public bathroom just a few days ago when we flushed the stool. Kids being kids.

She's probably due for a hearing test anyway, so I would get it checked and discuss everything with a specialist to rule out any problems or worries. You can also question them about the possibility of tinnitis (ringing in the ears) and some medications available to control it if its bothersome. :}

My 7 year old had an ear infection about 3 weeks ago and he was telling me that he had a ringing in his ear. The dr told us it was his ear throbing kinda like when you smash your finger only you can hear it in your ear kinda like a ringing. A quick visit to the dr can not hurt.

As far as the fear of loud noises my 12 aand 10 year old boys are both still fearful of loud noises, They hate Fireworks and anything loud like that. It has gotten better as they get older no longer scared of the vacuum and stuff like that.
Hope this was some help to you Good luck
