wow, you may want to talk to her doc about thyroids or diabetes, etc My son is 5 1/2 and only 40 lbs, he is little but not underweight. My daughter is 3 1/2 and weighs 37, she is ideal and in the normal range. I would try to get ahold of it now and if what you are doing is not working, you need to talk to the doc. good luck

is she on a steroid asthma medicine? if so that can cause her to gain weight. any types of prednisones will definately cause weight gain especially if on them for long periods at a time. also she may have a thyroid disorder if she isn't on a steroid medicine for her asthma.it can possibly be a number of things but if they changed her meds that could be it. Do a look up of the side effects of any medicine she is taking to see if weight gain is one of them.4 lbs since november really isn't really a lot of weight. talk to her doctor if you're concerned and see what he/she says about it and if they think she is overweight you can voice any concerns to them and they should be able to help you out and maybe see whats causing her to be heavy.

Dear P.,
You don't say if you've consulted the pediatrician, but that is what I would do. Whenever any kind of meds are involved, I would consult the doctor to see if what she is taking could account for the weight gain. If she continues to gain, even with healthy eating and being very active, I'd insist on some tests to make sure there's no underlying medical reason for it.
Maybe I'm a little overly cautious, but I'd rather err from caution than ignore a possible health problem in a child.
Is it possible the asthma meds could be a factor? (Steroids) When did the doctor change the meds prescribed? Was it just p;rior to the gain in weight? Has the pediatrician ever addressed her weight as being a problem?
These are just questions that came to my mind from what you shared.
Hope you get some medical advice and find out if there is reason for concern.
I would also be very reluctant to administer a colonic cleanse to a two year old. That is potentially dangerous, and if she is drinking fluids and having regular bowel movements, isn't necessary. I know that it's currently very popular and a multi million dollar industry, but it isn't a cure all by any means.

Has her thyroid been checked yet? Possibly a Hypothyroid situtation. Are her asthma meds steroids? That causes massive weigh gain.

My daughter has been on steriods for her asthma, as have I. It can cause you to feel hungry all of the time. Talk to her doctor about what he recommends. At this age, it better to watch her weight under the doctor supervision.

Look at what she is eating first. www.everydayhealth.com has a free caloric intake chart you can use. It will keep track of everything. I would also talk to her pediatrician and make sure her thyroid is ok. Her weight is very excessive for her age. She should be no more than 30 pounds at 2 years. 2 year olds do not need to be on a diet but they do need to have their food intake looked at. She should be on 2% milk now, 3-4 servings of dairy a day. Eat out only once a week. Please don't wait, talk to the pediatrician right away!

P., you don't mention in your post if your daughter's doc. is concerned about her weight, is he/she? If not then you should not be concerned. Does her weight and height percentile's match? My daughter has been a big girl since she was born, but her doc. always reassures me that she is fine because her weight and height have always matched. At her 9 month check-up she was near 22 lbs.(95th percentile) and near 29"(94th percentile). He said he'd be concerned if her weight was what it was but her height were 79th percentile or less. Also, just because they are big girls now(yours and mine) that doesn't mean that they won't hit a point where they start to "level out".
Good luck and don't stress!

I'd find an alternative to the asthma meds if they are steroids and are causing her problem. 57 pounds at age 2 is serious business! My six year old son doesn't weigh nearly that much, and he's in the 75th percentile for his weight. If this is what the traditional medical community has to offer, I'd be looking for a naturopathic physician to find natural alternatives for her asthma issues, that don't have such disastrous side effects. You can find one on http://www.naturopathic.org/ Best wishes to you and your daughter.

Hi P.,

Most weight problems usually have to do with toxins in the system. A gentle fiber/colon cleanse (I know one if your interested) will remove the toxins from her colon so the nutrition she is eating will actually absorb into her bloodstream as it is supposed to. A probiotic/prebiotic will help as well.

Try looking into low glycemic index foods. These are foods where the carbs/sugar metabolizes slowly. You can google it for more information. She can eat as many of those anytime of day and it won't make her gain weight and it should help her lose some too.

Meds can change the body chemistry so it could have something to do with her new medication as well. Even if it does, the above information is still good.

God bless!

Many medications can cause weight gain. A friend of mine was on prednisone for asthma and gained 20 pounds in three months. Talk to your child's doctor about her weight and see if the doctor is concerned. Also, before starting ANY kind of home remedy or diet, get your doctor's okay. While you know your child best and it's your decision what to do, since your daughter is on medication you really need to make sure that whatever you do wont interfere with the meds.

If she's on steroids or corticosteroids, then they make her not only hungry, but gain weight on little food. You should discuss this with her doctor if it is bothersome or you think it is a health concern, and perhaps see if you can get her medicine changed to something else that won't have these side effects.

Check with the pharmacist to see if one of the side effects of the asthma meds is weight gain. If she has taken steriods- the type the dr. prescribes for asthma related problems, poision ivy reactions etc...they can make you gain weight. My son now 14 has in the past been prescribed steriods for his asthma and allergies in different situations. He was really skinny then after the steriods he gained weight. He is now started to thin out again because he has grown in height. He is also being more health conscious about foods.
