If it is just her cheeks it is probably just the heat. My kids would get so red you would think they would fall over. Once they got cooled down and got some water in them they were fine.
I am so upset! I thought I was doing a good deed today getting my kids out of the house and taking them to my friends pool. We were there for a couple hours and my baby was in the shade the whole time. Im not talking overcast, she had an umbrella on her and there wasnt a spec of sun on her. Her little baby cheeks are really red! How did this even happen? I may be overreacting but should I call the doc tomorrow? I have never had a sunburned baby before!
You guys are scaring me! Shes not showing any signs of dehydration.
Apparently Stephanie you have too much time on your hands.

I found out the hard way that umbrellas do not keep out the sun too... don't worry, it's an honest oops to think the shade an umbrella provides would protect from the sun. I too, got so lobster red, it was horrible!!
Put cool wet cloths on her skin, aloe and vit E
If you feel you need to call the Dr in the morning - then do so.
UV rays bounce. They bounce off the water surface of the pool, of the concrete, and they are invisible. So even though your baby was in the protective "shade", that was just from the light that you can see. I did not take my babies to the outdoor pools until they were over six months old, so I don't know if there is a safe sunscreen for babies as young as yours. Perhaps you may just want to limit your outdoor time, even if there is a shade.
My kids did the same thing and it was only from the heat. It's probably not a sunburn but redness from the heat. All my kids did this, some were worse than others. It should be fine by tomorrow.
Just make sure she's drinking enough and she'll be fine.
This happened to my little sister when she 5 weeks old. My parents took her out on my grandparents pontoon boat. My dad held her the entire time and she got sunburned on half her face, one arm, and one leg. We got back to the hotel my grandparents managed and the housekeeper looked at her and in her Cuban accent said "You forgot to flip her!"
Don't beat yourself up about it....most of us do things like this every now and then. As the others have said it's probably the heat. Make sure she feeds well to hydrate her and just keep a watchful eye on her. If you have some sort of thermometer, check her temperature is normal and her behaviour too. If in doubt use your intuition and follow your gut - take her to the doctors or hospital if need be.
I had this happen to my son too, the reflection from some of his toys and exersaucer burned him in a very short period of time - yes, put on the lotion but DO NOT use baby lotion - it held in the heat and moisture and blisters developed and mad a mess of his face for a while. We felt horrible. The doctor was able to phone in a script for some appropriate cream and it helped a lot. Good luck, and yes, call the doctor in the morning.
she's probably not sunburned but dehydrated or a heat rash...
put some lotion on her face...something without alcohol in it and see what happens overnight....
don't stress...you are still a good mom!!!
Red cheeks are probably just from being hot. My baby still turns all red when she is hot but it goes away once she cools down.
My brother found this article recently that makes you rethink how we shelter ourselves from sunlight. http://gizmodo.com/5823058/tanning-can-cause-cancer-but-n...
It's not an official doctor writing this, but does draw some very interesting points that hopefully will be further researched (connects autism to low vitamin D). Perhaps a little sun burn isn't so bad...
It could be a heat rash. I had my son in the summer, and my doctor was explicit about not having him outside for hours. (I'm sure it's more hot here.) Their bodies can't not regulate temperature that young. It can be dangerous, for them to be outside that long. (According to the Dr.) She might be a bit dehydrated, as well.
P.S.
I wasn't insinuating you've made a mistake!! It is SO hot here, we can' hardly step outside. I'm sure being outside for you, is just fine. You might ask your pediatrician about outside time, though. I had no idea about that kind of thing, until they told me themselves. My son got a bad heat rash, and that's how I found out!!
It is called reflective heat.
A person can even get sunburned on a cloudy rainy day.
2 hours out, is a long time for a baby, even for an adult.
Check with your Doctor.
Some people can get sun poisoning too.
I know, I am in Hawaii.
And my late Dad got sun poisoning before, when fishing.
It is too much sun.
There is also, sun stroke.
Again, too much sun.
there are also, various degrees of severity, of sunburn.
From what I've read, you should call the doctor

Don't beat yourself up over this- these things happen- you weren't being wreckless, and you thought you had your bases covered. Now you- and many of us- will do things differently next time. Hang in there! :)
I just want to second the heat rash possibility, check on her tomorrow, but my little one would get that easily when he was tiny. I would just keep her relatively cool and check her in the morning, if she is still red and you are worried, take her in. Sorry you are in this spot, you are not a bad mom and she will be ok!!
It happens. Just put sunscreen on her next time.
If you want, you can put some aloe on her cheeks...
She'll be fine.

The suns rays reflect off bright objects such as car windows and yes of course WATER...been there. best suggestion I have is to get an after sun lotion that contains Aloe Vera, that is also hypoalergenic. It will really help her. About a month ago, I was outdoors doing a bar-b-que and because we had an over hang over us, and we were facing the north with the building behind us, the suns rays were reflecting off the cars in the parking lot, and I came home sun burnt. I have sensitive fair skin and that's all it takes. Certainly try after sun lotion with ALOE...good luck
Put some fresh aloe on it. Don't call the doctor unless she's severely burned, like blisters and oozing. She probably got burned from the reflection off the pool, even though in the shade.
Best wishes!
Thanks for the reminder of how sensitive baby's are. Best wishes. BTW same thing happened to my sil's baby last year. In the shade the whole time too.
Aloe Vera is a really incredible healer of sunburn. If she really is sunburned, get it right away! It made a fast, huge difference on my son.
Wow, really? anyone can get sunburned in the shade...
