My 12 Mo Old Only Has Three Teeth

Is this unusual? She has two bottom teeth and one top tooth. The others aren't even starting to poke through, but I feel them under there. My son had about 8 teeth by this age! I guess it's probably a good thing- if they are up in her gums they aren't getting exposed to the bad stuff.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies! Good to know it's common. My mom just told me tonight that I was also a "late toother". She said I had 1 tooth in my whole head when I turned 1 year old. I also remember losing my baby teeth later than my friends. The good thing is I only recently had my first little "pit" filled recently- at 36. Even then it wasn't a full fledged cavity, and didn't even require numbing. I hope she gets my genes! :)

My daughter got her first tooth at 13 months. I was thankful as the delay helped keep her cavity free.

hahaha, this made me laugh because my daughters both had ZERO teeth by 12 months. They each got their first teeth around 13 months. They got all their teeth VERY FAST and caught up with average babies on teeth. It's actually better, then they have their baby teeth for less time. It never stopped my girls eating let me tell you. They had sharp gums and ate everything!

My doc says age of 1st tooth is normal if it is between 4-14ms. Sounds like you are in the norm!!

My son didn't start getting any teeth until a week before he turned 15 months. I just took him back to dentist (18 mos), he's getting them all late but catching up.

I was almost 2 before I got any teeth. My parents were very concerned but I did eventually get them all. I don't think it is a concern at all unless a child doesn't have any teeth by the time they are 18mo. Supposedly, the later you get your teeth the less likely you are to have a lot of cavities. I am 41 and have never had a cavity.

My daughter didn't get her first teeth until she was 14 months. She is now 27 months and still only has 12 teeth.

Everybody is different and it is nothing to worry about. Some people are slow to grow and then usually slow to loose their teeth while others are speedy. I had lost all of my baby teeth by the time I was in 5th grade, whereas my brother didn't loose his last baby tooth until he was a sophomore in high school. Both of us had great oral health!

My daughter was 10 1/2 months before she got her first! She is now almost 2 and still doesn't have all of them, whereas my others all had them. Doctor says she is just a late teether and it's normal. :)

My daughter didn't even begin cutting a tooth until 12 months. I was worried about it, but it's not all that uncommon.
She was perfectly healthy in every other way. It certainly didn't slow her down with eating.
Much to my dismay, my son started teething much sooner and I seriously considered stopping nursing because he bit me. But I got that worked out too and he quit.

Anyway, the pediatrician assured me it was fine and he was right.

Best wishes.

It's normal. Completely normal. It's not like you can do anything to coax them out anyway. :-) Just keep her on a mushy food diet without giving her anything chunky or fibrous. Purees are still good for her as well as easily mash-able foods and easily dissolving foods.

Well, my 16 month old only has 4 teeth, so welcome to the club. People are always commenting on it, too...and all the babies in the church nursery are much younger than her and have WAY more teeth...

So here's a comforting thought...I've heard (and there seems to be some truth in it) that the later they come in, the better and stronger they are. My first child was the same way, and she has beautiful, healthy teeth. She's 6.5 years old, and still hasn't lost a tooth (doesn't, in fact, even have any loose yet.) They got this trait from my husband, who is 32 years old and does not have ONE SINGLE CAVITY. Me, with my mouth full of crowns, etc...well, I'm a little green over that one. I take way better care of my teeth. :)

My son walked at 14 months and his first tooth didn't come in until 15 months. He also was totally was eating everything (including steak, potatoes, vegetables, everything!) off of the table too with no teeth. Everyone told me that the longer it took for them to come in the healthier they were. He turned 6 in June and asks constantly when he will loose his baby teeth :) because he is seeing all his friends loose theirs....

Totally normal. My son was really abnormal, in that he had almost all his teeth by 12 months. Ugh...that was horrible!! He was super teething and couldn't sleep for months.

My daughter's teeth came in the same way. At 10 months she got her first tooth. Her second at 11 months and her third at 13 months, with the 4th close behind. I think if she SKIPS a tooth, you need to watch. However, that's not always an issue either. My daughter's canines didn't come in until after her first molars. They did come in, so there wasn't an issue.
I would just check with her Pediatrician. If you start getting worried, go ahead and make the first dental appointment. :)

My 17 month old still only has 6 teeth. But I can feel two of her molars coming in. At 12 months she only had 4. All her little friends have 8+. My older daughter was slow too but eventually got all 20 by the time she was 30 months old. We think it's from my husband side. MIL said DH's teeth came in late too.

My kids didn't even cut 1 tooth until about 10 mos. My 2 year old is still waiting on a few teeth. I have been told that late teethers usually have very strong teeth. My mom said I was a late teether, and here I am, nearly 30 yrs old, and have never had a cavity.
