My 13 year old daughter just started her period for the third time in a one month period. Has anyone else has this happen? If so, did you go to the doctor and what was the treatment? She has been having regular periods for 1 1/2 years. Thanks for any information you can provide.

What can I do next?

This happened to me (well it was 3 periods within 40days) when I was 21. I didn't go to the docotor and it only happened once. There is really no such thing as a normal period. When I was 13 I skipped my period for about 6 mnths. Weird things happen.

How long has she been having periods? If this is within the first few cycles, sadly, it's probably fairly normal. At the beginning things can get a little wacky. If she's been menstruating for a while (maybe like more than 6 months or so) then I'd probably call the doctor. I might actually call your OBGYN, assuming she is still seeing a pediatrician, as I feel that they have a better handle on these "weird" issues.

When I first started my period I remember having one 'normal' or 'average' period and then I got my second one and it lasted 2 months straight. My doctor put me on birth control to regulate my period after that and I never had a problem while on the pill. My period became like clockwork while on the pill
I hope it gets better for your daughter
Good Luck

A girl I used to babysit many years ago had something similar. She'd have on/off bleeding for a couple of weeks then it wouldn't come again for a couple of months then the bleeding would start up again in a stop/start fashion and go away again. The ob/gyn told her that it is fairly normal but to get her more regulated the mother did put her teenage daughter on birth control which definitely worked.

Call the doctor to find out if your daughter needs to be checked for anemia. My mother once needed a blood transfusion for a period that lasted too long when she was a girl. I also have an aunt who became anemic from a lengthy period and had to take iron supplements. Don't give your daughter iron supplements without a doctor's recommendation, though, because too much iron can be dangerous. Hope your daughter's cycle gets back to normal soon : )

This has happened to me more than once and to my friends. Periods are influenced by several factors, not just hormones, tho hormones probably are the largest factor. At her age her hormone production is still not consistent. I wouldn't be concerned. If this happens frequently, birth control pills will usually cause periods to be more regular but I'm not sure I'd use them with someone this young. Give her body a chance to regulate its self.

However, this may just be a one time thing. I'd wait and see how the next month or two go.

If you would like her to see a doctor who won't just put her on the pill, I would recommend Dr.(Don Palencia, DO, NFPMC

He is a medical consultant for NaPro Technology which works in observing a woman's natural biomarkers for identifying and treating hormone and fertility issues naturally. I have had several friends go to him for hormone imbalances and he was able to treat them without the pill and without the associated risks of being on the pill.

oh wow I feel so bad for her. My sister had her periods for 14-20 days out of the month every month. She was like that for years and my Mother took her to the doctor when she was 15. She started at 12. The doctor said that it was normal and that every girl is different. She has really bad pains though and I don't think it's normal. But who knows maybe you should take her to a pediatrician just in case and maybe to a gyno. Not sure but to this day my sister has major cramps when she starts and now is only on her period for 5 days max. Her cramps have sometimes been major to where she will fall down on the floor. So probably you should take her in to get checked out. Good luck and take care.

If you are concerned, you should definitely take her to the doctor. Not a pedia though. Gynecologists start seeing women from the start of their first period. They will likely recommend birth control or that you wait for it regulate on its own. So that basically comes down to how comfortable you are with yer being on the pill. Regardless, if you're concerned you should take her in for a visit.
