Mucusy Cough in Toddler

THis kind of goes with my last post, but my 3 year old still has a bad cold with phlegmy cough now. She's not coughing in middle of night, and we have her on Flovent and albuterol for preventing asthma attacks. My question is, is a phlegmy/mucusy cough normal with a bad cold, and is it a good or bad sign? Does it mean the mucus is breaking up or thinning?
If I can hear her mucusy cough in her chest, would this endanger her more to have an asthma attack, even with her preventative asthma meds?

What can I do next?

Please take her to the Doctor, again... or for a follow up.

I have Asthma.
I once got like that.
And, I had Pneumonia. There was no fever mind you, but the Pneumonia was there. I then had to take Antibiotics.

There is no way, to analyze this yourself. A Doctor, should be diagnosing her.

1. Do not use expectorants/musinex unless your doctor says its ok. They are not recommended for use in young children. 2. How is your daughter feeling otherwise? I would take her back to the daughter if she is not feeling better. As someone else said it could be turning into pneumonia or brochitis. I also recommend using a humidifier in her room and trying the hot shower steam mentioned below (not strange at all! :) )

My son was diagnosed with Restrictive Respiratory Disease (asthma for children under age 5) when he was two. He was hospitalized after not being able to breath all night (in the ER) finally. He is actually going through this now because he has asthma attacks I am on him the second I hear him coughing or whizzing.

When it first begins he gets the albuterol treatment the first day. If it is still not working or working but not as best as he I would like then I prop him up in bed and use Vicks Vapor Rub....when he as still like it was Vicks Vapor for Babies...works wonders. He is still coughing BUT it sounds like it is breaking up and it's not as frequent as before. If you do not have vicks and are concerned, go into your bathroom turn on the show to HOT no cold and leave the room and shut the door. Check in about 10 minutes to see if it is steamed up if it is take your daughter as close to the shower as possible and get her to breath, better if you can get her to cough because she will inhale more. This breaks up the phlegm, and before anyone thinks I'm strange this was recommended by his allergist and his pediatrician.

Also if you are concern if she is in distressed (her breathing) left up her shirt and watch her breath, when she inhales if you can see a clear definition of her lungs it means he is having problems. Because I am a paranoid mother, and the ER doctor said he knew I was going to be one of those that took my son in to the ER often this is how he told me when I need to bring him in. It has saved many middle of the night trips.

They have changed so much of this since my kids were little. I don't know if you can give her an expectorant or not. Something like Robitussion or Musinex. I would call a local pharamacy and talk to a pharmacisit, sometimes you can give a half dose.

I know because so many parents abused the cold meds for kids so for so long, to get the kids to sleep, many have gone off the market. And the media reports say they are all unsafe. But as long as your are responsibile and use them properly they are safe and work.

Wet cough is good, means it's breaking up, but you have to help her expell it. Try Mucinex, it is fabulous on wet coughs. Give her pure lemon tea. That breaks it up more and she will poop it out. One entire lemon, 1 teaspoonful of honey, as hot as she can stand it. Spoon feed it to her if necessary. She may be more suseptable to an asthma attack because of the coughing, for sure, but you have her on all the right meds for that, so she should be fine unless she has bad coughing bouts.

Have you thought about using a vaporizer with Lavendar oil?

Young Living has a therapeutic grade,

Good luck.

Sounds a bit like my little guy that just got out of the hospital with RSV. But we had a breathing treatment that we have to do with Albuterol. So it sounds like if your little one isn't running a fever and if the mucus is clear, you should be good. Do you have a vaporizer you could use?
