My 8 month old has phlegmy drainage that causes sporadic coughing and wakes him almost as soon as I lay him down. It is also causing him to gag and throw up. I thought it was teething, but a friend's son has the same symptoms (going on one week).
Help?

What can I do next?

I would maybe recommend bathing the baby before bedtime in Johnson and Johnson's eucalyptus bath for babies. I have used it MANY times and it really seems to help the mucus clear out before bedtime.

My son (7 months old) has that problem because of allergies, and I put him in his car seat to nap. It keeps him tilted up a little to keep him from draining so much. Hope this helps.

When my kids get like this, I do use a humidifier and suck out their noses. I have also found great success in keeping them away from all milk and dairy and giving them Vit. C and something called Calms Forte for kids. Both of these are in an easy little tiny pill that instantly dissolves in their mouth. You can find both of them at the Home Economist. The Vitamin C will help with the allergies and/or the sickness. The calms forte will help with clingyness and crying. Both are by Hylands. Also, trying to keep him hydrated will thin the mucous and make it easier to come out. If you are still nursing, you should also stay away from all dairy and drink a ton. I usually drink something called Emergen_C. You can get it at wal-mart. It has a lot of vit. C and B vitamins and he will get it that way too.
If this migrates to his ears, my family and friends and I have had awesome success with the garlic and willow ear drops. The willow immediately takes away the pain and the garlic gets rid of the infection.
I hope this helps! I hope you both get some sleep soon!

K.,
Are you suctioning out the mucous from his nose when you hear it? When my son was like that, I would sit in a rocking chair and let him sleep on my chest. This helped keep the drainage from going into his ears and causing yet another problem--an ear infection. If that's too uncomfortable, I would suggest propping his mattress up slightly so his head can be elevated. Hope this helps.

Good Morning~

Not only does the baby being up all night while you are knowing he doesn't feel good, but it gives you a terrible lack of sleep along with a feeling of wishing you could just make your baby feel better!
Do you still have that little blue nose plunger thing that the hospital gave you after you gave birth? My daughter had the same thing when she was little. I was told to put the hottest water on in the bathroom, with the door closed, and bundle her up leaving just her face exposed, and take her in a steam bath. DON'T PUT YOUR BABY IN THE WATER!!! Just let them inhale the steam, it will loosen up all the mucus to drain, and using that blue nose plunger to help get some out as well, where they are too young to know to blow. I hope this works for you, I know it did me. Good luck and I hope your little one feels better soon....this hot to cold and cold to hot weather hurts all of us this time of year. God Bless you and yours.

My 6 month old is really congested right now. We've been using the saline spray in his nose and then suctioning it out, but it's been a never-ending battle with snot for the past two days. He uses a pacifier to go to sleep, but last night his nose was so stuffy, he couldn't breathe with it in, so he hardly slept all night. After doing a lot of research online, I saw that Vicks Baby Rub is supposed to be really good. Apparantly, if you rub it on the baby's chest and bottoms of their feet, it is a good decongestant and cough suppressant. As soon as I get off work this evening, I'm going to buy some and try it out. Maybe it would be good for your baby too:)

We put a pillow underneath the crib mattress at the "head" end, so that our child's head is slightly raised up during the night - helps with the mucous and with preventing ear infections. Also, the Sudacare vapor plugs work GREAT for us in preventing coughing and then he can sleep, but not sure if you can use that for an infant (although it's not "medicated" and I think it's not toxic). Also, have you tried a humidifier? That made a ton of difference for our child as well. God bless!

my daughter began doing this around 6 months old. She also had a horrible runny nose. She did this for months until I couldn't take it any longer. Nothing we tried would help. I finally asked the doctor about it, and he started her on allergy medicine. She stopped coughing and was almost completely better within 2 weeks. Ask your pediatrician about it.

Hi, K.! My daughter had mucousy drainage at an even younger age (3-4 months). The doctor said that this could be caused from allergies, although the baby is too young to be tested. She prescribed a medicine called Ceron DM, which really helped. Also, if your baby is having nasal symptoms as well, try some saline nasal drops in each nostril followed by a good cleaning with a bulb syringe. Sometimes the mucous in baby's throat drains down from the nose & sinuses, so cleaning the nose may help decrease the amount of drainage. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Try squirting saline into your baby's nostrils at night, then suctioning out (he/she will probably NOT like it, but it's very helpful) and you can also use a vaporizer or put Vick's Baby Vapor Rub on their chest at night.

If you are nursing, the first thing I would try is to stop eating dairy for a few days and see if that helps. Dairy is the number one food allergy and very good at creating mucus.

In fact you can do an elimination diet where you just eat chicken & veggies for a few days and then slowly back in other foods (3 days apart) to see if you can find the culprit.

It could also be aggravated by clothing detergents, bathing products, etc. Try to switch to allergen free products and see if it helps.

Your baby could benefit from liquid cod liver fish oil. I suggest a teaspoon a day of Nordic Naturals in a medicine syringe. Trying to put it in a bottle or anything else is a mistake. The taste is "penetrating". It is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Both my kids have been on it for over a year and not nearly as many sniffles and allergy symptoms.I also use on my kids in high allergy seasons or on moldy rainy days, saline ocean drops. It clears the pollen out of the nostrils.I have been using it twice a day the last few weeks morning and bedtime.

Also, on an unrelated topic, BHA and thalates too are getting a lot of play the last few days. If your baby drinks from a bottle not specifically made free of them. I suggest using glass bottles. They are safest and stainless stele sippy cups later in toddlerhood. It also lines the cans of baby formula cans and liquids. The EWG.com is a great resource for any questions on baby care and baby products that are safe.

Hi K.,
You will want to ask your doctor about this first as my daughter is 3 years old. But, she tends to have the same problem. Just once in a while, it can last for a week even. Possibly allergies, but anyway.. I have found that the pedia care Vapor Ball works for my daughter. Like I said though, I don't know if it is safe for an 8 month old. Just one suggestion, you will probably get many more! Good Luck hon :)

Not sure what you have tried. You can elevate one end of his crid to help with the drainage and run his hunidifer at night. You can also use saline drops and suction his nose before he goes to bed. I have been doing this with my 4 month old since she was 2 months. Hope this helps.

My little boy has had the same problem since he was around 6 months old. My doctor prescribed Donatussin DM drops. I only give to him before he goes to bed and it has helped him tremendously. It has an antihistamine to help dry up the mucus. I've also noticed he seems to cough more if he gets hot in the night. Hope this helps.

My son has had the same thing from about 3 months old he is now 7 months. I took him to the doc twice and they have told me the same thing both times which is to run a cool mist humidifer, give him steam baths, and suck him out with the bulb. I guess according to my physician there isn't much they can do and these are the best things to help it....hope that helps you some.

given the time of year, i'd say it's probably alergies. try using a vaporizer or humidifier in his room, make sure to suction his nose really good before(it'll prolly make him mad), and what seems to work best for us is rubbing some baby vicks vapo-rub in the babies chest before best. the scent seems to open blocked nasal passages so there is not to much snotting and coughing(you may have to apply again at some pint during the night cause it will wear off), and try propping him up in bed a little with a pillow or folded up blanket, and if worse comes to worse a 1/2 teaspoon of children's benedryl can help.

Try saline drops to break up the mucous, so it will drain easily & not choke little pumpkin. You may also want to prop up one end of the mattress, so his head is elevated. Here's hoping you & baby get some sleep soon!

I have taken my son to an AK (applied kinesiology) doctor here in Raleigh. She does muscle testing using my arm while I hold him and has been able to test many substances. Wheat and dairy were two primary ones affecting him and I cut those out and the mucus and his chest rash went away. Might want to consider food allergies and see if there are any AK doctors in your area. Sometimes there are Chiropractors who practice AK as well. Good luck! I know it is awful to hear them gagging and throwing up.

First off-take him to the pedi's just in case.

Second, you have gotten some great recommendations. Elevating his crib with a thin pillow, saline drops and the steam from the shower. I would like to expand upon the shower steam one by recommending you get some essential oils (pure ones) and place two drops of eucalyptus, two drops of lavender and two drops of camphor on a washcloth and place them under the shower so hot water will mix with it and create a aromatic blend in the bathroom. You could also place the same mix of oils in a pot of water and let it simmer on the stove to infuse the house. My duaghter had a bad case of croup a few months back and doing this was a lifesaver.

I hope your little guy feels better soon.

Hi K.,

This happened to my daughter when she was 1 month old (15 months now). I would elevate her crib or just lay her on a pillow with her head elevated. Before bed I would make sure the cool mist humidifier was on, rub her neck, chest and back with the Vicks Baby Rub. The saline drops can be a miracle worker, if you put two or three drops in each nostril and wait about 5 or 10 minutes before you use the aspirator. My 95 year old grand mother also recommends that you blow into the baby's mouth, which allows the air to blow the mucous out of the nose. I’ve tried it, after using the saline solution and it works.

I hope this helps!!

Sounds like allergies. Are you noticing any nasal drainage in the daytime? It might not even be enough to notice, but it can drain down the back of the throat, into the lungs during the day, then when he lies down it moves back up, causing the coughing, which is the body's attempt to clear it. You might consider a decongestant first thing each morning.

Hello~
You may have to get him checked out by the Pedi to make sure there is no infection. He could also have some allergies as well. There is really not much else medicine wise that you can give him. I've tried doing saline drops (called ocean spray or saline spray and can be purchased at any drug store) and then you lay him at an angle with his head below his feet. Gently squirt a little saline into each nostril (he won't like this) then take a nasal aspirator and suck the
mucus out. You may have to do this once or twice a day for a few days. If things aren't getting better you should probably take him to the pedi. Good luck!

This can be just a cold. Saline solution nasal drops or spray and suction with a bulb can help, if this last more than a week you should seek medical advice. Also if he sleeps in a semi-seated position he are going to have less post-nasal drip and less cough, you can use the car seat for the baby to sleep, it will be just a few days.
