We are a family of 4, kids are 8 & 6. Husband got a job in Cupertino and we are moving from CT. We want a short commute. He commutes here for 1 1/2 and needs a break. Renting budget is about $3,000 but are willing to go a bit higher if it's worth it. We would love a cluster home or gated community with newer homes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Getting overwhelmed!!! Also, any schools that stand out for having the best special needs services?

What can I do next?

Welcome to the Bay Area...soon! We've been here a year now and really like it. Cupertino is a great city--nice, safe, GREAT schools. The surrounding areas are nice too. Campbell is closeby, as well as Los Gatos (LOVE). I think that part of San Jose is nice too. One place to look for rentals is https://www.padmapper.com/. They use Google maps to show where things are, with pictures. I did a quick look and it seems there are places within your budget. Though, most in that range will be condos and apartments, not houses.
You can check out GreatSchools.com to see the schools in that area and their scores. I don't know about special needs though.
It's a nice, family friendly area. You shouldn't have much trouble finding somewhere with a short commute for your husband. People love bikes here, so there is a lot of bike commuting too.
We're up in Menlo Park, about 30 minutes north of Cupertino. Good luck! It will all work out. In that area, you mostly can't go wrong.

When will you be here? How much in advance do you want to start a lease? Are you planning on a permanent move?

Great news and welcome!
I've lived in this general area for a long time but only in the south bay for about 5 years. We lived in Mountain View for 4 1/2 years before moving to San Jose and we love it here in SJ! We live in the Willow Glen neighborhood near a very good school. And basically here we can afford a roof over our heads here whereas in Mountain View the market is insane. By that I mean houses renting for $5000 a month.
Cupertino can be insane too so you might consider Sunnyvale, Los Altos (potentially very pricey), Campbell, or parts of San Jose. Each has pluses and minuses. People in this area are very conscious of schools and that factor has a lot to do with what you can afford in a given city or even neighborhood. So if this is important, do your research into schools and be clear with an agent.
Good luck with the move! You'll be here just in time for the rain, but spring will be beautiful and will come much earlier than you're used to. :)

Welcome! Cupertino has great schools, nearby Los Altos does as well. You will find something wonderful and a short commute. Very nice! Does your husband's new company have someone that can help give you with a referral to a rental company or real estate agent? There are so many. Good luck!
