Moving to Houston Area - Katy or Rosenberg/Richmond/Fulshear Area

My husband recently took a position in the Sealy area. We are thinking we shouldn't move there but rather Katy or Richmond/Rosenberg/Fulshear area. I guess. We're kind of shooting in the dark here....not exactly knowing where the best community/schools would be. We know Katy would be the most ideal but would like to keep our options open. Also, my husband doesn't want a long commute everyday. We have 2 daughters, a 3rd grader and Pre-K'er. Any all suggestions/advice would be most appreciated. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the responses! I think the majority of you are saying Katy. Besides Cinco Ranch, what other communities are there? Does anyone know about the more established neighborhoods like Nottingham Country, Grand Lakes, Falcon Point, etc?

My suggestion would be Katy. Richmond/Rosenberg are not that great. Schools aren't as good. Katy has very high ranking schools and parts of katy are very close to Sealy. It would not be a long commute at all. There are new communities going in as we speak along I-10.

I have lived in the Houston all my life and I have been living particularly in West Houston for about 15 years. Katy and Cinco Ranch are closest to Sealy and also have exceptional school districts especially Cinco Ranch. Katy is a developed area, but its really not that great. In fact there are areas of Katy that have really diminished the appeal of Katy. Fulshear is not too far from Sealy and is definately in development now. The homes are beautiful and you can still commute to Cinco or Katy to accesss malls and shopping centers, grocery stores, etc. If I was moving to Houston I would definately check into the Fulshear area first and then look into Cinco and lastly Katy.

Katy (probably the best in the area), Sugarland, Stafford, all pretty good areas with great school districts. Richmond and Rosenberg have some really nice areas (like Greatwood), but the school districts aren't the best, and there are a lot of run down neighborhoods.

Fulshear seems to be kind of in the country from what I know, so if you prefer a country atmosphere, check it out. Katy / Cinco Ranch look likes it's probably closer to Sealy.

Fort Bend ISD has been ranked higher than Lamar Consolidated (which would be the Richmond/rosenberg schools). Here's a good place to look for community info.

But I'm pretty new here too, only been here about 6 months, also came from DFW area.

If you like small town living, move to Bellville. We have a wonderful public school system and christian private school. I love it here, we moved here a 1 1/2 ago, everyone looks out for one another and is very caring and helpful. When we first moved to TX 6 years ago we moved to Katy. it was ok if you like big city living, it is not for me, I like small town living with having the convenience of still being close enough if I need to go the city it is about 40 minutes. But I rarely go, I can get everything I need here in town or Brenham which is 20 minutes from us.
I agree about Sealy, haven't heard good things about the school district and but the housing market there is cheap.
Blessings!

sealy is quite a ways from richmond and rosenberg not a real long ways away but he would have to get paid good to make it worth the drive. now fulshear isnt to far from sealy. niether is katy. what type of enviorment do you want? if you want a country setting go fulshear or sealy. if you want city go to katy. katy has one of the best school districts in texas. sealys are not very well talked about. fulshear i am not sure on. if you move to fulshear you are closer to katy and all the stores. if you move to sealy you have dollar general and I think one grocery store. but you are 10 miles from katy. I am in katy and love it. its quiet and laid back. katy mills mall has realy cheap clothes. so depends on what lifestyle you want small town or big town.

I have family in Rosenberg. It's very country and not the most beautiful of towns. Not my favorite. I think you can buy a cheap house there though. I would only move to Rosenberg if I bought a country home on some land. It is a farming community. She's a teacher and I think the schools are decent. I think Richmond is nicer than Rosenberg, and it's only a few miles up the road. They are very close together but I really like the feel of Richmond better. It's definitely feels a little more like suburbia than Rosenberg so just depends on what you are going for. I didn't think Katy was all that close but if I were moving, Katy would be where I go. Great schools, great neighborhoods.

We live in Katy and my children are in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. So far so good. I have a sophomore, a 5th grader and one that graduated in 2008.
I substitute teach in the district as well. I love the Pre-K & Kinder classes!
Welcome to the area!

We are also moving to the Houston area, but my husband is working on the other side (Northeast Houston). Katy is not an option for us because it would be too long of a commute, but I have heard great things about the Katy schools.

I lived in Katy for 12 yrs but now live in New Braunfels. Katy has GREAT schools. But they are still very BIG. There are now 9 high schools, so dont think it is that small town. My brother lives in Governer's Place subdivision and it is great! We lived in Sundown VIllage is was good too, our neighbors were not as social. I would drive around and see what you think, if you have the time. Go at different times of the day and weekend to see what kind of activity goes on.
Good luck and GOD BLESS!

Hi Laureliza,
It is hard to know what to do, but I highly recommend Katy. I have a child in Kindergarten and Grade 1 at Jeanette Hayes Elementary School in Katy. The teachers are very nice and work well with the kids. One of my children has autism and they are very involved in helping him. Katy is a very nice area too. If you buy I would avoid some of the gated communities as the home owners associations are like dictators and you cannot avoid them if you have them. Ask your realtor about them before you buy. There is a Park and Ride in Kingsland Blvd that my husband uses everyday to get to Houston. There is no local bus service but we also have a pretty safe area to live in. Katy is a pretty direct drive to Sealy also. The I-10 is straight along from Sealy. It is a fast highway.
A friend of mine who lives in the Fort Bend area is not happy with the schools there so definately look at the school zoned near the house you are wanting to buy before you sign. We have some of the usual grocery stores here Kroger, Randalls, HEB, Fiesta, Walmart, Sams Club, Best Buy, Ross, TJ Maxx, etc... We have a few bouncy castle play areas that kids usually love. They are great for parties. There is Plenty of choices of places to eat out. Not many organic restuarants if any. You can get pretty much anything you want here. If you haven't looked yet, try the www.har.com site.

Sincerely,

W.

I left Katy a couple of years ago and wish I never had. The area is great for families. Kids have plenty of friends and things to do. And there are a ton of SAHMs that get together and do things. I would go back there is a min!!
