My husband and I are moving from San Jose to Cape Town, South Africa in two weeks. Our daughter is 6 months old. What advice do you have for an infant on a looooong flight?? We have been given lots of advice already (nurse on takeoff and landing, baby tylenol, etc), but wanted to see if there were any new ideas out there on how to weather the storm!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

net teething feeder...Sassy and Munchkin make one. Fill it with ice, frozen fruit, apple slice, whatever kinds of food you have started her on. If you haven't started solids then just stick with ice. My son was around that age when we made a 12 hour road trip (I know, not the same) and the net feeder really helped. Good luck on your new journey! I can't wait for my husband to graduate school in hopes that we move overseas. My family and I moved to Indonesia when I was 6 months and lived there until I was 10. I loved every minute of it and would move back in a second. Not only will this be great for you but for your child as well!

Hopefully at 6 months she is not too mobile yet. Everyone has great suggestions, definitely check if your airline has the bassinet option like Singapore Air does. And really, don't worry about irritating other passengers. Most people are pretty nice and even if they aren't, you'll probably never seen them again! So do whatever you need to keep your child happy and yourself sane. While we did not travel nearly as far as you will, we took our daughter cross-country at 5 months and were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. Perhaps you will be pleasantly surprised, too.

Best of luck on your new adventure!

How exciting! Good luck to you. Twenty yrs ago when I traveled from London to Sydney (two consecutive red eye flights with a stop in Singapore) the airlines gave me the bulkhead seat. They had hanging baskets that could be set-up there, so my son could sleep after take off. Rules might have changed since then, but you can ask. The next best would be to have her sleep in her car seat in her own seat, if she has her own ticket.

Bring a new toy that your child has never seen before. But also bring something that is familiar. At six months she will still probably sleep a lot on the plane(s) but have things to keep her occupied for when she is awake. Be sure to bring food if she's eating baby food but I wouldn't nurse during takeoff and landing instead give her a pacifier. If the takeoff or landing scare her she could end up biting you! You could try soaking it in sugar water to get her to take it. My doctor suggested this but only for this kind of situation not on a regular basis. Bring extra clothes for you both just in case of any accidents and dress in layers. Sometimes the plane can get very cold. I live overseas and travel to the states frequently and when my daughter was six months she did great on a plane it's when they get older and want to run around it becomes more difficult.
