Tonigth is the first night we put our daughter in a toddler bed. She is getting up but staying in her room, which is great, but wondering how I can get her to stay in bed instead of getting out. Any pointers? What works? What doesn't work? Any advice is appreciated.

What can I do next?

My oldest (2.5) gets up sometimes and moves around, talks to her animals, etc. I just ignore her. The novelty of it will wear off I bet. I wouldn't go in there because I wouldn't want her to start doing it to get attention. You're lucky she staying in there!! :-)

We just transferred our 2 yr old at Christmas into his new toddler bed, and yes, he gets up and wanders about his room. We, too, ignore it. He always manages to get back into the bed before falling asleep.

We did, however, have to put a gate on the outside of his bedroom door, because it doesn't latch, and he can open it. He was wandering around the house, which isn't okay for us.

The getting out of bed does make me a little nervous, since we're also expecting a 2nd this Feb, and I don't want him to wake up #2 at night. But then I realized the new baby will sleep in our room until he sleeps through the night anyway. If it becomes an issue when they're sharing a room, then we'll worry about it then.

I completely agree with Kerri...My daughter did the same when we transitioned her. She would get up, hang out, play, read books, make a mess then fall asleep. Like Kerri said, once the novelty wears off, she'll settle into a new routine for going to sleep and you'll be good!

We moved our son to his "big boy" bed in September. He turned 2 then. He has a room that has a built in for a twin bed so only the front is open. We got one of those bed rails for the open side. He still can crawl down the the sides of it and he does wander around his room, get in the window blinds etc etc but we also have a gate at his door so he cant wander out of his room. We just tell him about every 10 minutes or so to GET BACK IN BED!!! lol Sometimes he is so tired he doesnt get down but on the days he does he eventually realizes we arent letting him out and he gets back in bed on his own and goes to sleep. After about 20-30 minutes of silence we go check on him and cover him up etc. We also have a baby due on March 9th so we really wanted him to get used to being in the bed and not thinking the new babys crib is his. It has been easier than I thought it would be. Good Luck!

Have you tried getting bedding to go with her fave cartoon character? My son loved his new Cars bedding and pillow enough to stay in his room most nights.

My daughter is 2 and still sleeps in her crib, but I have been wondering if I should switch her to a big bed. I just am afraid she wouldn't stay in it and she is such a great sleeper. I didn't want to mess that up! =) My friend has a two year old and she has his bed next to a wall and has a rail attachment on the other side. She said it works really well with that b/c it still kind of feels like a crib to him! Not sure if you have tried that but it might work! I look forward to all of the advice you get b/c I will be here soon! Good luck! And, congrats on number 2!
