Mouse Droppings

Eww...So, as my two year old has outgrown many of his baby items, we have stored them above our garage. Figured it was drier there than the basement. Most items are enclosed, but some were thrown into an open box. Some were too big, but I guess I should have covered them. I was up there the other day and noticed mouse droppings on things like the seat of the swing, the boppy pillow, the fish of the mobile.
What's the protocol for cleaning this stuff and using it again in the future? I am not opposed to buying a new boppy or the lesser expensive items, but I'd rather clean the other things if I can. I was so disgusted that I don't know what else has been affected. The infant seat, the bassinet, high chair... EVERYTHING is up there.

Hi J., I have had the same experience, and your first thought is "Oh, how gross!!" Through my Shaklee business, I have discovered the best germicide called Basic G. It kills all the pathogens that bleach does, plus more, but it is safe for us and safe for the environment. I have customers who use it regularly to clean the mold and mildew off their boats, boat cushions, etc. and also off the siding on their homes. My husband powerwashes our deck each spring with it to get rid of the "green" mildew. I wash our bathrooms with it regularly, especially the toilet and surrounding area (I have little grandsons with terrible aim!!)and even wash the bathroom floors with it. It is great to spray on doorknobs and toilet & faucet handles especially during flu season as it kills the bacteria, etc. If you want to ask me more questions about it, contact me at ###-###-#### or ____@____.com You may also go to my website www.emilytaft.com and type "Basic G" in the search box so that you can read more about it. It comes only in the one size and is heavily concentrated so lasts a long time -- generally 12-24 months, depending on how often you use it of course; most people who clean regularly need a new one in a year to a year & a half or 2 years. I found mouse droppings once on my kitchen appliance covers (toaster & coffeepot) and freaked out! I soaked both of them in Basic G & water and then threw them in the washer. They came out beautiful, and I was confident that there was no danger in re-using them. Best Wishes - I hope this helps. E. Taft

You can throw a boppy in the dryer after washing. Toss in a couple of clean tennis balls to get it to fluff. Did it when I bought a 2nd hand boppy and it worked perfectly. Although, maybe you can't do that over and over. I'd try washing most anything fabric with oxi-clean and regular laundry soap. You may have to do stuff on cold or be VERY careful to wash things separately that may bleed color. Most of the stuff (car seat cover, swing seat, high chair covers) can go in the wash just look for instructions. I washed a graco swing seat cover after a poop incident (albeit baby poop not mouse) and it survived and came out clean.
I'd say be brave, what's the worst that can happen?

bleach all the plastic items and wash all the covers and boppy in the washer. As for your mice if you don't like the idea of traps they do have humane ones. We had a huge mice problem in the apartment we used to live in after our neighbor that had several cats moved out so we ended up w/ a cat and he is an awesome hunter we didn't see or hear another mouse after getting him.

Anything that is plastic can be disinfected with a bleach solution. About one cup of bleach per gallon and slop it on liberally and leave it wet for a while, or even soak it in a tub if possible. The non-plastic stuff like the boppy pillow and car seat cover I would wash in the washer with something like oxy clean or Clorox2 added on the hottest setting. I used to wash mine and if you fluff Boppy up and let it air dry it will retain its shape. Do not put Boppy in the dryer since the poly-filling will clump. Then it is time to get rid of the mice - traps or ask the hardware store for advice. We have no mice (knock on wood) but have lots of bugs in the attic - we use those "bombs" which are basically spray cans that keep spraying once you start them. We "bomb" our attic once a year to get rid of wasps and flies. Make sure to remove or cover everything with plastic because the bombs leave a white powder behind, and of course the floor will be covered with dead bugs. You may also need to seal any holes to keep mice from coming back. If all else fails, call a professional exterminator.
