We will be vacationing in Cozumel next week and wasn't sure if I need repellent for the boys or not. If so, what do you recommend is the best mosquito repellent to use on children? Should I even put that stuff on my 10 month old?

What can I do next?

This is the BEST!!! Start taking B1. It is not expensive, a bit hard to find, but not expensive. I started it 2 years ago after a lifetime of staying in after dark and it works GREAT!! A friend had recommended it and I have recommended it too and everyone who's tried it swears by it. Any brand will do, btw

I have gone to Cozumel 5 times over the last few years and never really needed any mosquito repellent except for once when out on an excursion that took us through the jungle in a jeep. A good repellent is tying dryer sheets or pinning the sheets to the inside of their clothes. I have done that here at home and it really does work! Also, there are mosquito bracelets that I used for the kids and placed them around their ankles instead of the wrists. Here is something to also think about. My nieces just came back from Cozumel and the water is VERY cold right now. Be prepared to not enjoy the ocean as much as you thought. The water is usually on the cool side but it is only in the high 70's to mid 80's right now so the water is a bit cooler than if you were really hot. If you haven't gone to Cozumel before, you might want to check out Chakanaab, Xcaret, or Xel-Ha. Take lots of $1 bills for the taxi cabs into town. The best shopping is in the square by the dolphin fountain. Go down the side streets and do some serious bartering!Don't shop along the street it is very expensive. Be careful of what your 5 year old might see - they have a lot of stuff pertaining to sex (male parts shaped into pipes for smoking). Also, if you would like to eat in town a really good safe restaurant is also located next to the dolphin fountain. A great picture of the sun setting is where the boats dock across the street from the square, it is beautiful. A great gift to yourself would be a message on the beach. It is very private and very relaxing! Another little tid-bit, if you drink soft drinks, just pack you a 24 pack in a suit case because they will run you around $2-$3 for a can over there. Something else you could do with the kids is take a boat over to Cancun and in the mall they have an aquarium place you can pay to go into and see dolphin and sharks. It is really cool! I think the boat ride is pretty quick like 30 minutes or so.

Mosquitos love me!! If everyone in this world hated me, I know mosuitos would still love me. :)
Anyway, when my husband and I went to Cozumel, I didn't put any on. There weren't any mosquitos. If you still want to put some on your baby, I think that's fine. Mosquitos loved my youngest when she was a baby and still do. We used those mosquito wipes or I sprayed it on my hand and rubbed it on her skin. I din't put any on her face or hands until she was older.

If you're using an insect repellent with DEET, you should only apply it to clothing, not on skin, especially with the baby. There are also family friendly conventional brands like OFF, which has lower levels of DEET or none at all. You can also try looking for the safer natural types, like BugBand, which is what I use, but the scent is much stronger in my opinion, but chemical free is safest.

R., not sure about the 10 month old. The rest of you can use this for soft skin and insect repellent. Skin So Soft by Avon. When I lived in Garland 3 yrs ago that is what I used because I spendt a lot of time outdoors.

I would use the skin so soft by Avon. I know it works I have sold it to farmers and have used it myself while working out in the yard. I have also put it on my 2 year old grand daughter. Okay Iam a grand mother not a new mom just a old mom. But I love reading what everyone writes and you know sometime grandmothers have good ideas.

take care

Best to check with your pharmacist or pediatrician, especially since your baby is so young...don't forget to get a "baby-safe" sun block and hat for the baby, too!

When you get back, I can give you information about safer alternatives. You can find my contact info in my profile.

Have FUN on your trip!

Avon Skin So Soft Original scent is a great repellant. Even better, it is absolutely safe to put on the little ones. I do sell Avon, but only started doing so recently and have used Skin So Soft as a mosquito repellant since I was a kid.

I really like Burt's Bees insect repellent. It has a sort of plant in it--smells like lemons--and it really works :)
Have fun!!!
