I live in an area that doesn't get many mosquito's, so bites haven't been an issue for years. Mosquito bites were always annoying and itchy in the past...but this year I'm having crazy reactions to them! I went to a house that had alot of mosquitos and I have 4 bites on my legs, they have become HUGE!!! (in diameter) I'm talking bigger than a quarter! the one my thigh is actually about the size of a coaster right now! and they are becoming bruised looking as they heal. What the heck?!?! any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Go to the doctor!!! I live on the Gulf Coast in Texas, AKA, The Skeeter Capitol of the world!!! THAT is NOT normal mosquito bite reactions!!! Having a small lump?, yes....the size of a coaster?.....NO!!!!
You may just need some Benadryl....I'd get a Dr's opinion anyway.

Some people get an allergic reaction to them (my sister is one of them -- your problems sound just like hers!). You can take Benadryl at night time, throw the Benadryl gel or cream on them during the day, and just try not to itch. We live in a high mosquito area, and I have yet to come across anything that immediately takes them away (no matter how much I hate those things)!

You will think I am insane when I tell you this, but a lady in her 90s told several of us younger mothers this one day and I swear it works like a charm! Take regular table salt and pour it in your hand (as much as you want), then wet your fingers with some water and dap on the salt. Rub the salt on your bites liberally. You will be able to dust the dry salt off pretty quickly afterwards. The salt is a natural iodine source and will stop the itching and works WONDERS on the swelling. I thought it was absolutely crazy sounding but our daughter has a bad reaction also to mosquitos and we are never without a few little packets of salt even in the car. She now prefers to use this method over a cortisone cream because it works quicker and better.

Exactly how my youngest reacts to bites , she also get's a fever and loss of appetite. I have to give Benadryl , on the plus side though she only reacts like this if she get's 4+ bites at one time , 1 or 2 at a time and she seems to be ok.

You are not the only one that is getting this reaction. The mosquito's are just vicious this year and their bites are huge. When I get a bite I use Benedryl, i have a stick that has liquid that I can apply right to the bite. Good luck and where bug spray, I found a really good Off spray that goes on clear and dry and doesn't have the terrible odor.

My daughter swells up pretty badly with mosquito bites and someone recommended an cream called After Bite. It is the best!! I carry it everywhere and put it on as soon as I notice one. It stops the itch and swelling quickly. My whole family uses it now. It can be found at drug stores, Target, Walmart, etc. Good luck!

I can't wait to try the salt suggestion. My MIL lives in California (basically mosquito-free) and comes to visit us in Texas and has bad reactions to mosquito bites here. What she's found works is to immediately put hydrogen peroxide on it (uses a q-tip to dab it on). Lets it dry. She may have a bump for a few weeks, but the itch goes away immediately she says. I've been trying that on my son and it seems to work. But I have to put it on when it's a fresh bite - otherwise he'll scratch it till it's an open sore and then it's PAINFUL to put the hyd.peroxide on it.

My daughter and I both get like that with the mosquitoes. You are having a mild allergic reaction to them. Take a benadryl and put some cortizone cream on the bites. People become allergic to different things growing up at odd times, so you might have developed an allergic reaction to them now.

I can totally understand the salt theory... ocean (salt water) always helps when you have a sore, etc.
Anyway, you can also put tea tree oil on it because that is a natural anticeptic... also it is a preventive measure... just put a couple of drops of it mixed with a body lotion (preferably unscented lotion) and rub over exposed areas. It can also be used as a natural bug repellant.

It might be BECAUSE you haven't been bitten for several years. Your story made me think of when little ones get bitten for the first few times, they have quite a reaction. Sorry, no suggestion for the healing process. Another thought...are you sure they are mosquito bites?

It doesn't sound like your average, run of the mill mosquito bite. If they don't begin to get better in a few days, I'd call the doctor to make sure it's not something different.

But, most of the reaction is an allergy to their saliva. So, the responses about getting a topical or oral antihistamine are probably going to be the first reaction from your physician. It's OK to call, too, to see what they recommend.

Are you positive they are mosquitoes? Maybe a different insect or spider bite. I'd get it checked out by a doctor just in case.

are you sure they are mosquito bites? My dd had three bites that were about the size of a silver dollar. I took her to see the doc and she had a secondary infection from the bite. She was not scratching it but they were huge. she was on an antibiotic for 2 weeks and it went away but left a scar where the bug bit into her. Give it another day or two and if it is better go in.
