I don't use fabric softener on anything- I don't like it and I have super sensitive skin and fragrance issues...
Do you use fabric softener on your bed sheets and pillow cases?
A post from Tracy K yesterday about sheets got me wondering... one person responded that you shouldn't use fabric softener on your sheets, as it actually makes them 'less soft?'
I use it because I'm thinking it should soften them, it is fabric 'softener' after all... I do understand that it could leave a film on the sheets of some sort (which is why I don't use it on towels - they don't absorb as well), but do your sheets actually come out softer if you don't use fabric softener? I also like it for the fresh smell, but of course, that doesn't last long anyhow...
So, do you use fabric softener, liquid or dryer sheets, on your bed linens? Why or why not?
ETA - After reading Denise's response, I need to clarify... I use liquid fabric softener in the wash for softness and smell, and a dryer sheet to keep static cling at bay... I'm now wondering how many others do this? My mom does! Guess that's where I learned it?

I don't use fabric softener on our sheets..or anything else. I've used it in the past, but it just seems like extra chemicals without any real benefit. I don't miss it, but our sheets are always super soft!
I use liquid and sheets on my clothes and sheets, but not the towels. I was told that it creates a film on the towels that keeps them from being as absorbent. And that when you get them wet and start rubbing them all over your body, you are rubbing that film all over yourself. Who knows, maybe, maybe not? Sounds reasonable though.
I don't use fabric softener most of our sheets because I bought new ones and the care label indicated no fabric softener. They were expensive so I want them to last. I do use a dryer sheet with t-shirt sheets.
I didn't use fabric softeners for almost 2 years when we were trying to get out of a minor debt hole. I don't miss it. The only thing I use softener sheets on are my clothes (which I was separate from everyone else's) and loads of towels, because I want them to smell pretty :) One box of 60 sheets lasts me absolutely forever!!
I use liquid and dryer sheets on our towels and sheets.
I use dryer sheets for flannel sheets since they can get static cling. Otherwise, no softener. I do use liquid softener for clothes if I will be hanging them up to dry. I usually hang most clothes up, outisde in the summer and inside in the winter. The dryer is horrible on clothes. No softener for towels. I do add vinegar to my wash for sheets and towels though so maybe I don't notice the lack of softener. And they don't get stale too quickly.
This is another 'splurge' item for me... meaning I have really expensive sheets (I have sensory issues). They're $300 for fitted and flat off the rack, but I paid $100 for them during one of the whites sales. ((I don't care if I have ripped sheets, I REFUSE to pay full price for them. Cheap of me, I know, since they last decades, but I'm on a tight budget. Mondo sales, or Ebay))
They don't need fabric softener. They come out of the wash liquidly velvety soft (cotton). Gotta love high thread count!
I don't use fabric softener on anything because of the chemical fragrance, but that's me. :) Trader Joe's had these wonderful lavender sachet packets to put in the dryer and I do like those ... not sure if they still have them, though; they were kind of pricey.
Generally, I don't use fabric softener on anything. And my sheets and towels are soft.
My husband, OTOH, s a Bounce sheet junkie and I have to make sure he doesn't use it in everything.....
I use the PUrex crystals that are sugar, clay, and fragrance so I feel that it's fine to use. I used to use softener but then I lost my job so those luxury's were cut. . . except when they are on a great sale :D
