We have been thinking about a trip to Monterey this summer, but are hearing so much about the sea lion problems that I am hesitant. Can someone who is there tell me if it would be a good experience or not? Would hate to get there and spend the week feeling so sad for the poor creatures that we can't enjoy our vaca. Thanks.

I havent heard of any EXTRA dying sea lions on the coast. I'm in Nor Cal. If anything the beach might be cold, foggy and windy when you come.... that is as bad as it gets.

I live in Northern California and haven't heard about anything weird with sea lions in Monterey. Are you talking about the starvation problems in Southern California? I just don't think we're having any of that up here. If we are, it isn't making the news. You might check out the website for the local newspaper in Monterey to see if there has been any coverage of the issue.

In Monterey, you're in a bay and don't really see too many sea lions all over the place. They're not just wandering around the tourist areas. You may see some looking out from the outlook at the aquarium, but that's about it.

It has not affected us and we are in the effected area. In fact, I have not even heard about it or seen one wash up myself and we live on the beach in Southern California. While there my be a genuine problem in the balance of the Ocean, it sounds to be a news story that got overblown if you think its going to effect your vacation in any way.

I live on the Monterey Bay. I am not sure what you are concerned about. There are always sick/dead animals on our beaches, sometimes more than other times, but it isn't really a tourist issue. It is sort of the circle of life. Are you worried about carcasses on the beach or sharks in the water due to weakened animals? The bay is huge with many miles of beaches. It is a marine preserve, so you are going to experience nature in its purest form if you visit; that is what makes it so extraordinary. You should come. It is really spectacular.

I live in Carmel, a couple of miles from Monterey. You are mistaken there is no particular sea lion problem here. We run a vacation rental business, tourism is booming.

I walk on the beaches all the time, it's gorgeous, nothing to feel sad about here!

It's been a while since I've been there, but I highly recommend the Aquarium. It had good interactive exhibits for the kids. I was there without my kids and I was wishing they were with me to enjoy it. I don't know anything about the sea lion issues.
