I have a money tree so I've been told, I bought it about 2 months ago and ever since I repotted it, its dying I have found a few tiny bugs flying around it but other than that the leaves are turning black and falling off. It had great new growth but those all developed small round spots all over the leaves and just withered and died too. When I pull off the dead growths all the base is very moist...I only water it ever so often like once a week or less....I dont know what to do and thought maybe someone out there knows more about them than I do! I know nothing so any insight helps :)

I would repot the whole plant. Sounds like fruit flies, so something in the soil has created a new home for them. But of course, fruit flies don't cause black spots so I don't know what that is.But new soil and a dry place would help. Just get new soil, and be careful not to damage the roots. If you are attached to the pot, make sure to wash it out thoroughly, and clean the area around where the plant was sitting...good luck!

R.,

Make sure you place your tree in an out of the way place, away from friends and family. They tend to prune those trees way before it's pruning time!!

Hi R.,

It sounds like your tree has a blight of some sort. Whenever I have this kind of thing, I take an affected leaf into a plant nursery and they can usually diagnose it pretty readily and then provide the cure. Good luck! Gotta get that money tree growing again! ;)

It sounds as if you may have spider mites. They are not easily seen, as they are very small. They eat the sap of the leaf and cause the leaves to darken and fall off.

These are easily killed with a houseplant pesticide. You probably should be sure the plant is not near to other houseplants, as the mites can spread to them.

it could be root rot, you might want to try letting it dry out a little. when you transplant a plant it's a good idea to wet the new soil around the plant and not water the plant itself, that way the roots are incouraged to grow and stretch toward the new wet soil. otherwise the new soil might not be drying out between waterings and causing the rot. or it could be some kind of fungus, try getting an anti fungal spray and applying it once a week. there's a brand that i believe is called Safer, they have a 3 in 1 spray that takes care of bugs, mites, and fungus. good luck.

I killed a money tree from watering it too much. When I bought a new one the guy told me to give it very little water.
