Hi Moms,
My name is A. and my family and friends call me Angel. I was born perfectly normal and in my early childhood, I started losing my eye sight and hearing ability. I have a 2-year-year boy now and engaged to my fiancé for over 2 years now. I considered myself very independent but recently my son has been more active like running around and all that and it’s very hard for me to watch him because of my vision. I wan wondering if any of you moms going through what I’m going through right now. I don’t have a lot of friends who have kids and who have vision and hearing problems. I hope somebody here in Mamapedia can share there experiences with me. Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

Well my mom has been totally blind since her childhood. She raised me and my sister as a single mom after my father died. My sister was9 and I was 4 when he passed. She always kept our toys up and would bring down one thing at a time. It really helped with the clutter everywhere. Another thing she did was put bells on us. She would buy elastic string from a fabric store and string a bell on it. We would wear these on our ankles so she would know where we were. For you it's doubly important to make sure the childproofing of your house is done well. Gates locks etc are your best friend. I hope this is helpful to you. My mom currently lives just a block away from me and watches my 3 yo twice a week. She still puts bells on him. If you have other specific questions pm me. My mom works for an advocacy organization so we have some excellent resources. I wish you all the luck.

Have you seen a geneticist and had a diagnosis yet? If so, maybe you should look into support groups for those with your same diagnosis. I imagine there are some great resources for the blind. I know there are companies that make alerting devices for those that are deaf that may help you keep better track of you son if he is in another room. Are you using hearing aids? Have the hearing aids and hearing been checked lately by your Audiologist? Your audiologist may be able to lead you to some good resources as well. Good luck and bless you.
