My nine month old has dark patches on his body. Everybody keeps asking me why he has that. On the tip of his little toes he has them... as if he had gotten a tan by wearing open toed shoes. which he doesn't wear open toed and i rarely let him be out in the sun, second... he also has a dark patch on his knees... as if he were crawling all day without pants and had gotten dirty from the floor... which he rather stand and hold on to teh couch than crawl and when he does he's wearing thin lite pants. Third he has a dark patch on his lower back that goes down to his butt. I don't know if his is normal... i use to not think about it because I myself have dark patches on my elbows (so does my dad's side of the family) but now that everybody is asking me about it its making me worry. I've tried googling and nothing comes up. My son has an appt on wed and i plan on asking the doc but just wanted to see if any of you have heard this before or have the same problem? thanks!

What can I do next?

I've seen purple mongolian spots that did indeed look like bruises. But I've seen brown patches that don't look like bruises at all. Since this poster is saying they look like tanning, I'd say that it's the type of birth mark my kids have. These don't look like bruises.

In any event, don't worry about it. I doubt you have a big problem. I did read once that if a person has more than a certain amount of them that it could indicate a disease. But I don't remember how many. It's quite a few though.

Google Mongolian spots. I don't know your ethnicity, but they are much more common in people of African, Asian, and Hispanic heritage. If they are Mongolia spots, they are nothing to worry about.

Well how dark is his skin? I know both of my boys have had their somewhat splotchy times as their color comes in. My husband to this day has some places that are darker than others. My sons knees are pretty dark as well. One day my mom was scrubbing and scrubbing them and I told her "Mama you can't wash the color off!!"^_^ My son also has a dark spot on his back where he scraped it once and it totally healed but looks a bit darker there. So if he has dark skinned parents, he may darken up with age an this may happen in pieces. I think asking the dr sounds like a good idea though. I bet he is just fine:D

It sounds like Mongolian spots. Especially the one on his back/butt. My son has one there and on his leg. What nationality are you? My husband is black- they tend to be common for black people. My niece had them too. They are supposed to lighten or go away with age. My son is 3 and still has them. Look it up and see if that's what it looks like.
