Gripe water is for babies and does not contain alcohol unless maybe you got it from a foreign country or something. We used it for my son and its usually sold in a health food store and I have never seen a brand with alcohol. As with anything you give a child, always read labels, just in case. She will be fine.

I gave it to my oldest, who is not 5 1/2, and it was a life saver. I recieved it from a friend, who was a lactation specialist and my pediatricians never said anything, so there was obviously no concern about it being unsafe. It is fennel & ginger and works great to calm upset stomachs. Congrats on the new baby!

I am not sure why you are asking the question - will she be OK because you gave her gripe water? Or is it the underlying issue for which you gave the gripe water the reason for your question?
How much did you give? Did the box tell you it was OK for her age/weight? Did you check with her doctor first? I am sure if you followed dosing instructions, she will be fine. However, please talk to her doctor before giving her any more. Some studies have found the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and other ingredients in some of the gripe waters on the market are not good for babies.
Call her doctor any time you have a question about your baby.
Best wishes!

Please be careful with homeopathic remedies in an infant. They are not regulated by the FDA for purity and standardization of ingredients and lack research to ascertain that they are safe. A few years ago a brand of gripe water was found to have a harmful parisite causing diarreah in an infant. See this link for more info:http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/389063/fda_warni.... Though it is unlikely your daughter will suffer such fate, please be careful. Just because the bottle says "all natural" doesn't mean it's good for you or your baby. I have the same questions Scarlett asked. There are many different formulations for gripe water, some of which contain alcohol and/or baking soda which could be harmful for babies in large amounts. As a rule of thumb, it's generally not a good idea to give an infant or young child anything experimental. Ask your pediatrician's office first.
If your daughter seems to be in great distress, I can understand your wanting to find a way to give her some comfort. Try burping her for longer periods – some babies need a longer time to get all that swallowed air out of their tummies. Try avoiding gas-forming foods yourself if she's breast-feeding. And try the tips in these very helpful short videos:
She will be ok but dont give it to her again. All you need to do is buy some dry fennel seeds (from the spice section at the supermarket) put a teaspoon in a glass boil some water and pour 1/3 of the cup full and let the seeds sit til it cools, drain and give a traspoon to baby before feeds. All natural relieves colic and aids digestion.
