HI Moms,
I have a 3 year old son and am just getting out of a very bumpy relationship with his father. We were together almost 4 years and for the majority of it we really did not get along. I think we both tried to stay in it for our son because of the circumstances of how we were raised. We both came from dysfunctional homes and wanted a more secure setting for him. I have been "not myself" for a while now knowing that I was not happy being int his relationship but not really having the courage to end it. I put up with many things from him that I would not have in any other relationship. I finally got the courage to do it on New Years day after he came home drunk again and caused some drama with our son(not harming him). Anyways I will be a single mother now and although I have a full time job (teacher)am trying to make a budget that will work for me. I currently have a 2 bedroom apartment that I really am not going to be able to afford on my own with having to pay for daycare too. So, I am asking for help. Do any of you know of apartments for rent on the North Side (Rogers Park area) that are available? I am looking for something under $900 with either 2 bedrooms or a large 1 bedroom. I would really appreciate any connections I could get. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
I'm sorry to hear that you have to figure all of this out in your own. Have you tried looking at the Chicago Reader's website? They have a search feature to put in the zip code, rent, and size of apartment you are looking for. In the past, they have had a lot on the North side at all levels of rent. If you don't want to search online, I think the Reader is still distributed for free on either Thursdays/Fridays. You can usually find it at the entrance to bookstores/cafes on the North Side.

Good Luck.

Hi M.,
I do not know of any apartments, but I am in the same situation as you, though we have not called it off yet...but we almost have and are on the verge. We just had our 4 year anniversary and we have a 3 month old daughter, but things are horrible. Write me in a few months, and I may be looking for a place, too!
Best of luck to you! Let me know if you need an ear. I bet I could sympathize!

Hi M.,
I'm not sure what amenities you are looking for but you could try calling this place:
Apts: Reunion Property Management now has two 1-bedroom apartments available at 1545 W. Pratt. Rent is $725/mo. Includes a storage, heat, gas, and water. Contact Ronn Frantz 773/761-4860.

I'm not sure if there is a laundry in the building - however there is a laundromat straight across the street. It's on the corner of Pratt & Bosworth, with not too far a walk to the Morse el stop.

I hope you find a place that works for you!

Hi M.,

As far as I know the following notice is still current:

Reunion Property Management now has two 1-bedroom apartments available at 1545 W. Pratt. Rent is $725/mo. Includes a storage, heat, gas, and water. Contact Ronn Frantz 773/761-4860.

These are fairly nice-sized units; I've been in several of them. And Ronn Frantz (a friend from my church) is extremely kind and helpful. If these two apartments are gone, he'll likely have other ideas.

Best wishes to you in this difficult transition.

I don't know how far North you want to go but here is the number
###-###-####, 7343 W. Addison, 60634. not sure the price but I believe heat is included.
It's a three bed room I believe. I have the same lay out in my apartment and it's a good size.

I've been in your shoes before and I wish you all the best. Just remember to be strong for your son. It will help you break the dysfunctional cycle and raise a good man.

Hi M.,

Many blessings on your journey.

We have a great apt that I am subletting next week, you could have two weeks rent and hi-speed internet for free until Feb 1st. And then it would be month to month or sign a lease with the landlord. Our apt is gigantic! Really, it's 2000 sq ft with three bedrooms that would each hold king size beds, two bathrooms, and an updated kitchen. All hardwood floors, lots of sunlight, top floor of three. I know you asked for $900 or less but I think you'll be very challenged to find that in this area without it being ghetto-like. This unit is $1100 and is beautiful. Your quality of life would be very good here, we're 1 block from the beach.
