My 10 year old son has been on medication( concerta and now Vyanase for his ADHD for 8 months. Now that summer is here we have taken him off until school starts. These medications can stunt your growth while on them so we need to give his body a rest. In the meanwhile , he is off the wall and totally out of control. I am losing my mind! It is taking its toll on all of us. He is a loving child but a very hyper one with behavioral issues. Now that he is off the meds , the days are very long. Does anyone have any suggestions for any natural pills that may help. Even if they take the edge off. We need to give him something to get through the summer months. All suggestions are welcomed!

Try www.mothernature.com. It gives herbal supplements for what ails ya. There is also alot of information on this website to help you. Also, there is a great book. The Green Pharmacy. It lists ailment alphbetically and what herbs are good for them. These are just a few to start.

I could write a book but instead I'll refer you to one. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride is an amazing physician who has done extensive work in the field of how digestive and intestinal health affect mental health in her book "Gut and Psychology Syndrome". She cured her own son of autism and treats ADHD/ADD children as well. In a nutshell, I think the best "pill" you can give your son is a good probiotic, but her book explains better than I can. Also, your sons diet should be whole, unrefined foods. Side note: Mountain Dew will contribute to the demineralization of his bones so I would not advise making it a frequent beverage.

ADD/ADHD is completely treatable without drugs in cases where your child's immune system is not seriously compromised- you can do this.

It all about the DIET

I have 3 boys, My oldest is ADHD, give him nothing with food dyes, very limited sugar ( no refined sugars) NEVER caffiene
NO lunchables, because of the presevative

YES foods,

breakfast: Eggs, pancakes or waffles ( no syrup)a little Powdered sugar and fresh fruits ok but not alot, butter and STRAWBERRY sugar free jam are also ok.

Low sugar cereal, like rice crispies, corn flakes, cheerios kix, special K with strawberries, raisin bran without the sugar

NOT ok- Reeses cereal, honey nut cheerios , fruit loops, lucky charms, and so on.

Lunch possibilities:

griled cheese ( get the white not the yellow )and use wheat bread

grilled panini ( put low sodium turkey breast with cheese on the wheat bread and butter both of the outsides of the bread and place in a george forman grill or fry pan if you don't have the grill)

Do not use HONEY ham, or turkey no mayo no miracle whip

if he likes mustard fine, but no Ketchup or barbeque sauce
these have DYES and SUGARS

Start reading the labels and pretend he is a diabetic and has allergies.

Get him used to eating healthier, and you'll notice the diffrence right away.

Great dinner ideas, Peas and pasta, barbequed foods, stewed meals, plenty of veggies ect,

FRUITS are great, HOWEVER they are loaded with sugar,
the School lunches are swamped with presevatives.

So a great fruit for lunch would be watermelon, cantalope, and honey dew

oranges, berries ect are more sweet,( look for water based fruits for school days)

Email me if you want to talk more, and good luck

Hi N.,

The other responder was right about diet. Make sure your child drinks lots of filtered water, no soda, candy, food dyes. Avoid white flour and sugar and corn syrup. Eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains, provided there is not a wheat allergy there.

Then you can add essential oils of therapeutic quality. Dr. Valnet in France has studied therapeutic grade essential oils with kids with add and adhd. These concentrated aromatic oils known as the life blood in plants help the plants stay healthy and do the same for us. There are particular oils that work with the nervous system to calm and balance and ground us. You would apply them to your child's feet.

I am a mom who uses these and share the oils with others. My website is S.-healingoils.com. If you want the specific protocol for ADHD I am here for you. You can call me at ###-###-####.

No side effects. These oils are potent and work in perfect harmony with the human body.

Be blessed,
S.

Hello N.,

can you find a homeopathic doctor that would recommend the right herbs/supplements? also, how about getting chiropractic treatment? have you changed his diet? has he been tested for food allergies? have you trieed gluten-free diet? and avoiding artificial food colors? omega-3 supplements? You probably thought about these already. good luck! ~Carmen~

have you tried dietary changes? I've heard wonderful things about removing artificial dyes from diets. Also, my little sister drank Mountain Dew. It helped her a lot.

I'll start by saying I have one young daughter and no experince with ADHD so forgive me if my response ends up sounding ridiculous or uneducated. I thought of something while reading your post and thought I'd mention it.

I have a friend whose daughter had major behavior issues. At 5 she was an emotional rollercoaster. I'm really not close enough with her to know the details about her diagnosis. What I do know is that when she was tested by a doctor, who is an oncologist and a nutritionist and takes a very holistic approach to care, he found that her body was absorbing almost none of the amino acids that she was getting through the foods she was consuming. Diet is imporant in two aspects. First of all it's important to avoid things, as others have written, like preservatives, dyes and caffiene. But it's also important that they get the nutrition they do need. I suggest asking your doctor about testing his level of amino acid absorbtion. I don't know how expensive the test is or if it's readily available. I just think it might help. As will the probiotic that someone mentioned.

Best of luck to you!

Hi, I found an herbal supplement at a local health food store called A+ Attention. It controls mood swings, boosts confidence in children who are self-concious, and helps children to focus.

My son has problems with slowing his thought processes down and it helped him [me] greatly with the incessant talking. I really like it because it doesn't change his personality, it just enhances the good parts and keeps his exitability to a minimum. I also found it on Google @this site
