Hello,
Anyone have a home remedy for cough. My 2 year old son has been coughing almost none stop since this morning. He even threw-up his breakfast. I have yet to find a store bought cold medicine that helps either of my kids when they have a cold. With my 4 year old I think we just about tried everything that was "safe" for him over the years and nothing really helped. So now with my 2 year old I don't know what to do.
thanks
Thanks so much for all your responses! I took my son to urgent care on Saturday. He started wheezing and breathing very heavy. We were given a prescription for Abutral and a breathing machine for breathing treatments to clear out his lungs. The treatment was helpful. My son's throat was also red but he tested negative for strap through. He did go back to daycare today and I was told that he was still coughing but not continously like before. I was told that it was not Asthma but everyone I know who has it says that it usually starts with coughing. He has an appointment tomorrow morning with his regular Dr. Hopefully I will get better answers then I got from the ER Dr. on what could be causing this.
thanks again

You got a lot of responses so you may have already heard this, but what I do is 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar and 1/2 tsp honey. Heat it up for a couple seconds in the microwave and stir. It seems to help my son with his cough most of the time and he likes it!

Warm honey water. If he were a teen I'd suggest a little whiskey and lemon. But warm up some water to a temp he'd be able to handle, add some honey to it. like a teaspoon.
Another thing I have used is rubbed castor oil on the chest at bedtime. If he's wiped out from so much coughing, do it at naptime. But yes, Castor oil. Don't aske me, but it does help.
Robitussin usually has several different formulas.

Something that I found worked really well for my two year old is boiling water and using the Lipton green tea bags with lemon and ginseng. I make that in a teacup, then I add honey and mix it up well. I do have to coax my daughter into drinking it sometimes, but she gets it down. I just keep telling her she had to drink it to feel better! It does seem to help her cough. I have had to do that a couple of times this year, and it did make her cough less. Hope this helps!

Hi B. - just to be safe I think you should take your little one to the doctor. When my 11-year-old was just two he started coughing like crazy one day and also threw up. We were visiting family in the UK and I was really worried and took him to a doctor there - he was having an asthma attack. I don't mean to scare you - and there are lots of innocent coughs around - but if he's throwing up I think you should get it checked out - good luck - Alison

I understand! NOTHING works for coughs it seems. A remedy I have used that seems to help though is honey - just a straight spoonful if the child will take it. If he won't take that I dissolve it in a Tbsp or so of warm water and sqeeze some lemon in it. Seems funny, but I swear it is more effective than any cough syrup I have ever bought. Good luck!

My 14 month old had a really bad cough two weeks ago and I called the ped to find out what I could give him (if anything) and I was told I needed to bring him in. The nurse said there's no safe cough/cold medicine to give kids under 7 so he would need to see the doc. His cough was caused by a nasty virus going around. Since you're not supposed to use regular Vapo Rub on kids, we used Baby Vapo Rub on his feet and put socks on (even under his PJ's). It really seemed to work! I have also heard of using honey to calm coughs and to mix honey and apple cider vinegar and give a teaspoon of the mix.
Good luck. Seems like the trend these days is to let your kids cough it out (yep, we have a gagger, too, and there were a couple of puking incidents), but to call the pediatrician if you are concerned.
Best wishes!

Hi B.!
The best and safest solution for a cough is to rub Vics Vapor Rub on the bottoms of your son's feet and put a pair of socks over them before bedtime. It works like a charm for any age. Good Luck!

Try rubbing vics vapor rub on his feet, put socks over it and he should sleep without coughing through the night. It works for adults too.

Steam really helps to loosen up phelgm which could be what's making your son cough so much. I have had success by closing up a bathroom and giving my kids a warm bath or by bringing them in the room after I've taken a hot shower. The other thing to try if you haven't yet is children's mucinex to loosen things up. I don't remember off hand the age limits, so a steamy room might be your best bet. Also, try to avoid milk products and chocolate while he's coughing this way. It could actually increase the production of phelgm. Good Luck!

Vicks vaporub on the bottom of the feet with socks on before bed.
If it continues though I would go get checked for allergies. :)

Does your son have allergys? My daughter was coughing non-stop this same time last year so I took her in. She was actually weezing...it is very hard for parents to detect this when kids are little. I had no idea, she has since been on an inhaler at just this time of year and she never coughs. Just a thought!

First, check in with your pediatrician. For that age, over the counter cough medicines are not recommended at all. Kids over age 1 you could try a teaspoon of honey and see if it helps.

Sounds like he might have croup.
Turn the shower in the bathroom on full hot let the bathroom get steamy and sit in there with him, for 15-20minutes or so.
If that doesn't work sometimes the opposite works...go stand in front of the open freezer with him and let him breath in the cold air.

This is the best one I've ever found Boiron Homeopathic Medicine Chestal Honey Cough Syrup. It was a multi cough formula, it stopped my cough right away, and was great as a decongestant. I's for kids and adults, and a nice natural brand I trust. I just found theres a version just for kids too.
Good luck, it's no fun when the kidos are sick. A. H

You might check with your doctor. My boys started coughing earlier this week and it turned out to be a sinus infection (one was puking up phlem) and it was triggering their asthma. Asthma has been really bad this year. They are now on antibiotics and 4 breathing treatments a day.

Poor guy, I hope he feels better soon! "Honey...don't cough" is buckwheat honey remedy that is safe to give for coughs if older than 12 months. You can find it at independent pharmacies. You can google it for more information and where to purchase it.

Hi B.,
I have been using Vicks Vapor Rub on the soles of my feet, children and hubby for years!! Always remember to put the white tube socks on afterward.....thus creating no mess and it holds the rub onto the foot.
This works wonders! I know that it sounds 'Silly' and really it is one of those 'Old Wives Tales' -- however I learned this trick from a bunch of career RN's and it does work!!
God's blessings on you as you care for your little guy. ;-)

Are you sure it's a cold and not asthma? If you think it's a cold and has other symptoms try the honey or motrin.
If he has no other cold symptoms it could allergies or asthma. I thought my son had a cold with a constant cough and it turned out to be asthma brought on by allergies. He too coughed so hard and so often he puked.
Have you tried the warm steamy bathroom/shower?

well, they say that for kids under around 6, nothing really 'works' like the box says it should. are you sure your son has a cough due to a cold/postnasal drip? my son has asthma and allergies and his main symptom is constant coughing, usually to the point of vomiting. anyhow, it might be worth a trip to his doc. they might be able to help find out what is causing it. otherwise, have you tried the mucinex cough mini-melts? i think they work on my kids when they have congestion with coughing. robitussin sometimes works, depends on what's causing the coughing.
well, good luck! hope you find some relief for your little guy!

Both of mine had coughs for what seemed like the entire winter. The doctor said there is nothing to do at this age. It's best just to let them cough out the bad stuff (he did say we could use Dimetapp at night on our 3 yr. old - it helped A LITTLE but only for about 3 hrs.) Do give plenty of fluids to keep it thin to help with the throwing up from gagging.
