Happy Thanksgiving to all,

I've got Hanukkah pretty well sorted this year. However, I need some ideas for a few Christmas presents for my DS. I am intrigued by the book posted in the title above but have read and seen some of the work from this author, George R R Martin, before and they can be rather sexual and brutal.

Are there any mom book reviews on this book for my 14 year old teenager? Have any of you read this or had someone close to you do so? And if so what are your thoughts?

Lastly, there are mom movie review sites out there... I can't seem to find one for books. If someone has that sort of resource, sharing it would be greatly appreciated.

thoughts to you and yours, S.

So What Happened?

Thanks to all. I went ahead and ordered it. It's not like it's the last gift giving opportunity I'll have with him. I'm going to take your advice and read through it myself and if it's too intense for him now then I'll hang on to it for a couple of years. Risking the eye rolling here....because of his reading level it's difficult to find good books that he finds interesting and that are age appropriate at the same time.

Hoping all had a lovely holiday. :-) S.

I agree with megan s. The librarian is your best resource. That's what they are there for! If you can't get to the library you can still call them during business hours.
This book is a Game of Thrones prequel, right? I think if your kid is already into Game of Thrones then he will be well prepared for any violence/sex in this series.

I'm not familiar with the book, but you know, the best place I'd go for a review would be the children's librarian at the library. They usually have good idea of the content of most books and can usually talk with you and help you decide if a particular book is appropriate for your child. If I have questions about books for my nieces, the library is the first place I start.

Sorry I can't be of better help. Good luck to you, ad good for you for check out the appropriateness of a book first before giving it to your son.

Haven't read that title, but there are some others I would suggest. I have read all of these. I think all of them would be OK for a 14 year old, but I might not be as conservative as others might be.

I loved The Kiss of Deception (princess who doesn't want to be married off so runs away not knowing an assassin and the prince she was supposed to marry have tracked her). The sequel is on my to-be-read list.

I also liked Cinder (cyborg Cinderella). There are some others in the series, but I haven't read them yet.

If she likes kind of scary books Far, Far Away is good (a very loose modern-ish retelling of Hansel and Gretel).

The Body in the Woods is a good mystery novel about a group of teens who have been trained as search and rescue. I think there are others in the series.

The Tragedy Paper is a realistic fiction book about a kid who is albino who attends a private school. It kind of reminded me of some of the "classics" I read in high school like A Separate Peace.

I found reviews on good reads but none that answered your question

common sense media does review books but I don't see this book on their.

I forgot to look on amazon.
personally I loved the fire and ice books but would not want my kids to read them granted he is only 12....I wouldn't want to introduce kids to martin so unless she begged for it I would.find something else. Even if this one was ok. It could lead to wanting to watch the shows or read the other books and I personally want to fill my kids with other things so ...just my opinion

have been meaning to check for you and haven't gotten to it.............goodreads.com. let's people post their reactions to books...I don't know if they have young adult books but it might give u an idea.
Also can't amazon give you an idea??

Buy it an read it yourself

haven't read it, but yeah, all the fire and ice series are very very realistic in their depictions of the gore, violence and sexuality of a medieval society. so you need to base it on your overall family philosophy about this sort of thing, not just focus overly on this one book.

i read aloud to my boys until they were driving themselves, and we read adult novels together before they were tweens. i would edit any graphic sexuality somewhat when i read to them (ie i wouldn't gloss over whatever was going on but softened the language and imagery) but they were always permitted to read whatever they wanted at any age. when they were younger they wouldn't have picked anything as dense as martin to read independently, so censoring was never an issue.

and when they were teens it would never have occurred to me to consider censoring it.

i'd never trust a review site. i never agree with movie ratings. if you're unsure about this one, buy it and read it yourself, and if you approve, just give it to her later.
