I have a pamphlet from dermatologist office that says it can last from 6 months to 5 years (yes!) and that it goes away eventually on its own.
My 3 1/2 year old has had a molluscum on his right cheek since last summer. Our pediatrician said it will go away on it's own - but it's been almost a year. Does anyone have any at-home treatments that might work to get rid of it?

Hi N.,
My daughter had it from before she turned 1 to 2 years old on and off. It was on her face around her eyes. Some of the spots would go away on their own but there were a couple stubborn ones that didn't. The pediatric dermatologist said the goal was to get the little white heads to come out completely. She was going to use some type of venom (can't remember exactly what) which would cause it to scab and then come out with the scab. Well my daughter was very good about letting me pick at them (sorry, if t.m.i. - so gross!) so I was able to get out that white part. Once I did that, the spot would go away. Eventually, with patience, I was able to get them all. Good luck!!
My son had it all over his torso and onto his legs- we were also told it would go away on its own, but that it could take more than a year. We found that swimming in the pool helped it clear up rather quickly. I don't know how much your son will have his cheek in the water, but it's worth a try! Plus, the pool is a great way to burn some energy :D
Check out your closest park district pool, or the Y, or your health club, if you're able. Some health clubs have child care so you could maybe leave your 1-year old there. We just did park district pool, since that was in our price range. I've got a 1-year-old at home, too, so I know the thought of bringing him and an older child both to the pool can be daunting, but the chlorinated water could really help clear up those warts in very little time!
Good luck!
My 8 year old started with one spot under his arm and I had no idea what it was. Before I knew it, he had 3, then 5 then 8 or so. I took him to the dermatologist but by the time they got him in, he had even more. The dermatologist recommended going the natural route so we tried MolluscumRx which I've heard works for some but definitely didn't work for us. It stunk horribly and stained his clothes and seemed to spread it worse. By this time he had hundreds and had passed it on to his brother too (which isn't as bad of a case). We also tried tea tree oil which might have helped a little but didn't take it away. Now we are back at the dermatologist using beetle juice every two weeks. My older son is the worst case he has seen. It's horrible, by the time two weeks comes, he has a bunch more new break outs. My other son has a few but it's under control. I say all this to say, it's highly contagious and can be passed to others especially if it's on your child's face. Just watch for a white pimple like tip...and if your son's molluscum has that... that's when it's full of virus and will spread.
Good luck, I hope your son's is just a isolated case with the one, unfortunately my sons' have spread to arms, legs, face, feet, etc. Hope this helps.
My son had mollescum last year for several months. Nothing made it go away but Tee Tea Extract (which can be found in lotion form) made the rash appear less angry and seem to quicken the time it took for the little sores to heal after they popped.
My son had this all over the trunk of his body (little pimply, blistery looking things, right??) and a few on his face...his lasted a little over a year but are completely gone now...we used a medication off and on from a dermatologist but we also used tea tree oil...you can buy it at most health food stores...all you do is dab some on a cotton ball or swab and apply it to the affected areas...we did it at bedtime after his bath...I'm not sure if anything actually "worked" to get rid of them or they just ran their course but the tea tree oil seemed to help. good luck...if you are still concerned though, you might want to check out a pediatric dermatologist...:)
We had a severe case for about 9 months. It's not pretty. We were told to break the head off clean the area with alcohol and then apply tea tree oil. I don't know if this works or if time just makes them go away, but he is free and clear.
Hi N.. My daughter also had molluscum several years ago - soooo nasty and those little suckers seem to have a life of their own.
Luckily Mamasource keeps prior postings in your "My Files" section. Here's what I posted last Fall when another mom was dealing w/ molluscum:
My daughter had molluscum for about 2 years (started at age 3 or 4). Not a lot of bumps but they were on her face, some near her eyes and a few on her torso. Her pediatrician recommended a pediatric dermatologist. He used one ointment, Aldara, which didn't help. The second treatment he tried was the chemical to burn off the bumps - He put it on, you leave it on for about an hour & then wash it off w/ warm water - this was when it burned and hurt her - poor baby!
Like you, I did some research on the internet. I came across a website that offered a treatment plan that contained silver - an ointment and a spray to wash down EVERYTHING because this is highly contagious (as I truly found out because then I got it).
The site is www.molluscumsilvercure.com - don't know if they're still around but try it. I'm not sure if it was the treatment or that she was on the way out of molluscum hell but it worked! She was soon bump-free!
Like others mentioned here, the derm said to try piercing/opening the bump but it was too painful for my daugther. While I too used the ointment, I did pierce each bump to remove the hard, waxy "seed" and I then disinfected w/ alcohol before applying the ointment. Luckily mine only lasted a few months - I was dilligent about checking the area EVERY day/night.
I'd suggest the website treatment & get yourself some small circular-shaped bandaids where you can apply ointment & cover each individual bump. We did all day (put on a fresh band-aid w/ ointment in the morning & evening)on the few she had on her torso but at least overnight on those on her face.
Good luck! I know how frustrasting and helpless you feel. Oh, and they say they can spread through baths, swimming pools, and bath towels. Be careful w/ the rest of the family - I'd wipe down door knobs, fridge handles, pretty much her whole bedroom (I was obsessed I guess trying to contain it), etc w/ alcohol and/or lysol spray (and still got it).
I hope this info helps.
Hi. We've had to deal with molluscum for some time now. At one point they spread so much on my daughter (when she was about your son's age) that she had over 100. If he has one and only one and it's been there for about a year, I would not worry at all about it spreading. I would go see a dermatologist, though, to get it to go away. We tried several different treatments. The best is beetle juice. It is literally juice from a beetle. It simply causes a blister to form which makes the molluscum go away. It's worked wonders for my son, who has it now. DO NOT let them use "freezy spray." It traumatized my daughter. She is now 6 years old. She didn't used to be afraid of doctors. It took her about 3 years to feel safe again in a doctors office again after they used freezy spray on her. There is also a cream called Alderma which is commonly used for genital herpes but actually works fairly well for molluscum. It worked on my son but not my daughter. They say it can take 18 months for the bumps to go away if you do nothing, so if it's not bothering you too much, you could always just wait the 6 more months for it to go away on its own, especially if it's just the one bump. Good luck to you. I hope it's not a major pain for you guys and that your other little guy doesn't get it.
Oh - one more thing - if you go with the beetle juice, they will tell you to wash it off 4 hours after they put it on. If you do not, it will start to itch and even hurt some. If it starts bothering them sooner than the 4 hours, you can wash it off sooner as it means that the juice is already doing what it needs to do. If you don't wash it off as soon as it starts to bother him, it will become very uncomfortable.
Let me know if I can give you any other advice!
D.
It took my son about a year and 1/2 for it to go away. Doctors have a medicine they can put on it but it burns. It does speed up the process.
I took my daughter to a pediatric dermatologist. They treated it for several visits before it went away...I would check into this...it will spread.
