Molds AFTER Retainers???

My daughter has finished phase I of braces and has had her retainers for about 6 weeks. We went in to make sure the retainers were fitting correctly last week (they were) and when it was time to schedule our next appointment, I was told that she would have to have molds done AGAIN at her next appointment. My daughter has had a horrible time with getting the first two sets of molds done. She vomited the first time and had a lot of anxiety about having them done the second time although she did manage to not throw up. When I asked why we had to get another set of molds done I was told it was very important to have them to be able to compare them to the first set and ensure that phase I is complete. I'm just not buying this. Wouldn't the head x-rays that she had done before they took her braces off and the 2nd set of molds that they did to create her retainers show this? I do not want her to have to do these molds yet again if they're not necessary. Is this normally part of the process?

So What Happened?

These molds don't cost anything additional. Her phase I treatment is entirely paid. I just don't see the point in them especially since they cause her so much anxiety and are so unpleasant. I haven't even mentioned them to her because I'm just not convinced of the need for them.

You would be surprised at how fast teeth move.

We didn't have to get the second set of molds until 6 months later.

If she is gagging or vomiting - it sounds like she has a long uvula (the thing that hangs at the back of the throat) and they can do things to help with that so she won't vomit or gag.

Our molds were included in the price of the treatment so we didn't have to pay again. The molds also help when and if your daughter ever breaks or loses the retainers.

Yes, it's normal to have more molds done after the braces come off & again after the retainers, at least that's how my orthodontist did it. Make sure your daughter knows to breathe through her nose ONLY while the molds are in. You cannot vomit while breathing through your nose. I learned this the hard way after throwing up during x-rays myself & the nurse doing them told me that trick. To this day once in a while I will gag while brushing my teeth but the instant I remember to breathe through my nose the sensation goes away.

I am not in that stage yet with my kids.....But...it certainly sounds like they are trying to "milk" you for more $$$ since she is nearly complete with Orthodontics...hmmmm

I didn't have to do another set. They used the ones from my retainers. If she is wearing her retainers then she shouldn't need another mold and they should be able to use the last set.

My husband is in the dental field and the best advice I can give you is to ask your ortho why she/he needs additional molds. x-rays are not the same as the models for sure so just ask. They will give a detailed explanation.

Since they can't be 100% certain she wore her retainers every single day, they have to re-mold. Teeth move really fast, especially at her age. My daughter had to have several molds over the course of her braces. She didn't do well with it either.
