Mold Allergy and Constant Coughing

My 10 year old daughter is coughing non stop when in our house. I have this feeling the house is full of black mold. We moved here from AZ 5 months ago and our other house fell through so we are in this miserable short term rental for one more month. They slapped a shower insert over black mold all over the main bathroom. You can see it in the faucets and grout. I have already had my daughter allergy tested and we know she is highly allergic to mold. She can't breath upstairs, she has been sleeping on the couch or with us. I have bleached the house from head to toe. Wiped the window seals, vents, etc. I think it's in the heating ducts.I had no idea when we moved in. Plus we were kind of in a tough situation so we are trying to get through the final month. When I took my daughter to the doctor yesterday she didn't cough or wheeze at all! The dr. gave me z-pack because she said maybe she had bronchitis and over the counter delsym cough syrup. But it was almost like she didn't believe me. The cough syrup hasn't helped much. We have been up all night. Short of moving out in the middle of winter and breaking the lease for this dump, I don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your great support! We have an offer in on a beautiful, newer house in the Holly/White Lake area. We are going to do a lease purchase (hopefully) to get her out of this dump in under 4 weeks. So funny, I thought I was the only one who would not worry about the credit reprocussions of just moving out but it's nice to know mostly everyone else is the same way, i have to put her health above everything else. Thankfully, it's almost over. I am picking up an inhaler for her today because the cough medicine does nothing. Motrin helps (I think her bronchial tubes are enflamed)and in the mean time, we are going out a lot and she sleeps in my room now because it was an add on 2 years ago.
I had a couple more questions that I'll also add...we have tried benadryl, claritin, flonase, allegra, naturopathic combinations, a netti pot, etc...as far as going back to AZ...well you have to go where the paycheck is, the job market is just as bad there. I am very glad to be in MI where my family is.

I know that you have already closed this message, but you don't mention if you have talked to the landlord about this. You need to do that, it should be the first thing that you do. I had rentors that I talked to regularly. I always asked if there were any problems, or anything that needed fixed, and they always told me no. When they moved out, I found a leak under the house, causing a mold problem... I had lived in the house for 3 yrs before I rented it, and never had mold or a leak. They never, NEVER told me about it... INFORM THEM!!!!

If they say they don't believe you and won't come out (when you are home)have a mold expert come out and write up a report. If there is mold they will find it... this is your legal proof that you aren't just skipping out. Take pictures of the mold! Protect yourself, while you still have access and then move.

Write a letter asking that the landlord fix the problem... Also call them and talk to them, tell them to expect the letter ask them to come up with a different unit. Send a copy of the report from the mold expert and copies of the pictures.

I am so relieved that you and your family are moving out of that house. There isn't anyone who isn't immuned to black mold. Being expose to black mold can have long term affects on all of you, especially your children.

All of you were exposed to the black mold and children's lungs, of course, are much smaller than adult lungs. Strengthening the immune system will help, getting rid of the toxins in their system would be beneficial, and it wouldn't hurt to have them tested to see how much of an affect the mold had on their lungs.

If you would like to know how to strengthen their immune system, call me at ###-###-#### or email me.

Move, none of your family should be breathing this.

My husband has an "ozone machine" that kills mold dead. When it is running in the house no one can be in there, not even animals but it works great. We ran it in my sons room and his asthma improved dramatically at night time, he used to cough all night with his asthma. My husband has his own home improvement business, it's just him, but he's licensed and insured. If you are interested in a quote message me.
Good luck, I know how heart breaking it is to see your child suffer.

In the State of Michigan, renters have rights. If you go to the state's website, michigan.gov, click on attorney general, you can find a ton of information you can use. Bottom line, if you break your lease, you would have a great case for not paying the remainder of the lease. You can also file a complaint with the attorney general's office over this. It would be a small claims court issue, if your landlord goes afater you for the remainder of the lease. First though, you have to make your landlord aware of the problem, so write them a letter, telling them of the problem and that you see the black mold. The black mold you are concerned with is not just mold, it is like a slimy mold, so know what you are dealing with. And if it isn't black mold, but mold allergy, didn't the dr. prescribe an antihistamine, or is she already on that? And get your family out of there. Oh, and welcome to Michigan! Winter stinks, but fall is awesome!

I would consult some legal firm to see if you're obligated to pay for rent in a health hazardous place. Covering up a problem is nothing short of putting a band-aid on it. It doesn't fix the root problem, and if you don't get out of there, your health bills are going to exceed your rent.

Maybe going back to AZ would benefit. I know it's a lot healthier for respiratory problems there. It's a matter of what needs to be done for your health and her health. But that is not a good place to be living or renting.

Bleach....try some hydrogen peroxide. But if nothing solves the problem, you owe it to yourselves to vacate the premises. Bleach won't solve the root problem. You can call the action team at channel 7. They often help with situations like this. Whoever you pay rent to should be obligated to make it livable, and not at your expense. You could ask the county health inspectors to come in an verify the black mold problem and maybe have it torn down so others don't get sick there, or as addes pressure for the landlord to renovate and make the place possible to live in.

Yuck. Mold. I am afraid it is a Michigan thing. However, there is a huge difference between "black mold" and mold that is black. That being said, what kind of antihystamine are you using for your daughter? That should be helping. There are many fruits that are a natural solution; but, if you need something more potent, I may be able to help with that. Just ask me.

Good luck!

Have you tried giving your daughter any allergy medication. My daughter is very allergic to a lot of things and we are constantly battling asthma. She takes claritin and singulair on a daily basis and an inhaler for emergencies. I would suggest staring claritin immediately and giving it to her once a day. It does not cause drowsiness, so I really like it. Good Luck.
