This is a modified request from my last post..can you please share your "cutting molars" experience so I do not feel like I am losing my mind. My daughter just turned one and is cutting both upper molars (and the lowers now look very swollen). It has been about three week and I swear they have not moved at all. I just didn't know exactly how long they take to come in. She has always been a great sleeper and now her sleep is disrupted. She was also off the bottles and now needs one to get to sleep just at night. We are also battling ear infections because of the constant 3 week long period of congestion and runny nose she has. Any stories or recommendations would be appreciated. I feel like she has literaly been teething for 7 straight months..does it get better when they finaly come in :-)

What can I do next?

It varies from child to child. My first one was a nightmare! Teething made him miserable. It does get better - at least until the next ones come in. ;o) I just noticed this week that my youngest cut 3 molars without my noticing! Yea for the easy kids!

This just happened in my house. My 1 year old ended up with a double EI and a cold and molars all at once...best you can do is just keep her comfortable...maybe Motrin instead of Tylenol...lots of teethers (even though she won't be able to get the teething ring all the way to the back, just chewing might give her some relief). Will she eat things that are cold? My daughter loves cold stuff when she is teething so we do lots of yogurts and cold drinks.
It does get better when the teeth come all the way up. I never had any luck with teething tablets for my older daughter, so I haven't tried them with the baby yet. We went through a 3-4 week stretch where she was miserable and I was ready to rip my hair out. Then I ended up taking her to the doctor because I thought she had a stomach bug-turns out she was cutting those molars AND had the double EI. She got some meds for her ears (and has since had to get tubes because she has 6 EIs in a 12 month period)...she is a completely different child now that the teeth are through and her ears aren't bugging her.

Hang in there...this will pass. :)

Molars, congestion and everything else is such a trying things on the mothers. While the fathers help out ultimately it is the mom's that deal with them when they are sick. Make sure that your child does not have a croupy cough associated with the congestion. Motrin is good for the pain and hylands teething tablets helps with the pain and irritability. Give her a warm bath, teething tablets and the motrin before she goes to bed. my son has the croup cough now and i am hoping the decongestant the doctor prescribed will work. good luck

I feel your pain! Our older daughter's FIRST tooth was a molar--the 1st one on the bottom left. We knew she had to be cutting teeth because of the way she was acting (and she was also appox. 8 mo old at the time as well) and yet we couldn't ever see or feel anything when would look and/or rub our fingers along her gums. We spent weeks, and I do mean weeks, with the whole ear/nose issue, the moodiness, the lack of sleep, etc. As soon as that tooth came in though, everything went back to normal. That whole experience made all of the other teeth seem like a walk in the park.

For the bottle--I'm guessing her gums are hurting and she's needing something to chew on and her bottle is the only thing she can associate that with. I would honestly suggest not putting anything in it for her other than water so her current teeth aren't affected by the milk or anything. My guess is that once she's feeling better, she'll go back to being off the bottle again.

Good luck!

Orajel! There is both a regular and nighttime version (nighttime is a little more potent as it includes a pain reliever). Also try using Motrin now that she's 1 at night as it lasts longer than Tylenol. You can also try giving her teething rings again or soak a washcloth & ball it up in the freezer and give that to her to suck on. I believe it did take a bit of time for my son's molars to come in. If having a bottle at night soothes her, I'd say it's not a battle worth fighting right now. You know she isn't getting one during the day AND you know that this is only short term. Good luck - you'll all get through this!

Hi A.,
It does seem like they are teething forever, I agree! My son is 26 months and one of his molars is still trying to come through.

My advice to you is to keep the Motrin going for her, especially at night, it lasts longer than Tylenol does. I hate seeing my son in pain so we are big fans of Motrin. I would also encourage her to chew on something, teething toy, popsicle, etc.

It does get better, just keep her comfortable! Hang in there!

have you tried Hyland's teething tablets? those things were lifesavers for me when my daughter was cutting her top 4 teeth at the same time (and then for the rest of her teeth as well).

anyway, unfortunatly it does take forever for those molars to break through, but once they do... hallalujah!!!!!

OMG! You're not alone!!! I went through the same experience just a month ago- my daughter just cut her final molar a couple of weeks ago and since then she has been a different child, tempermentally anyways. I totally feel your pain.
My girl took forever for her teeth to cut through (3 months each time a set came in!) and it was awful. She was a terrible teether and there were times (with the molars) when I was piggy- backing Tylenol and Motrin and then using Oragel and teething tablets to supplement managing the pain. Plus she had a double ear infection so toss in the Amoxicillian and I felt like I was over medicating the poor kid! My daughter was never one for teethers or frozen washcloths or anything like that but the one thing I could get her to chomp on occassionally was a vibrating teether. That was rare though.
Just keep your little one as comfortable as possible. It will get better!!!!! :-)
