Hi Moms,

I have a 2.5yr old who has not yet had her MMR. She is scheduled to get it next week and I am nervous about it. What can I expect in terms of side effects?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

My kids haven't had it so I don't know the side effects but we are waiting till 2011 to get it because that is when they will re-release the seperated doses, so they will get measles-mumps-rubella in 3 seperate smaller doses instead of one big shot

You can always go for the single shots instead of the combined MMR. Just let your Dr.'s office know in advance that that is what you want to do, then they can order in any singles they may not have in stock.

I personally won't give my son any combination shots. He has only had single shots and only one shot per visit to prevent those combination reactions where you don't even know which vaccine caused the illness in your child.

Do what makes you feel comfortable and feels safe for your daughter. Don't let Dr.'s and/or nurses convince you to give your daughter the combo shot if you don't want to. Getting them one at a time is no big deal.

Good luck!

Your pediatrician will have information sheets about vaccines and their possible side effects. They're supposed to provide them automatically, but sometimes you have to ask. In my experience, it's better to get your child vaccinated, rather than worrying about the small percentage chance of something going wrong. As long as your child doesn't have an allergy to anything in the vaccination, the risk is small. And the benefits are huge!

Edit: If you're worried about pain at the injection site, ask your doctor about a topical anesthetic at the injection site (it's given 15-30 minutes before the injection). Not all doctors will do this, but it's worth asking about. I never did it with my sons; they were more than comforted with the stickers and lollipops they got afterward. *grin*

you know, i think that the window to have this shot has passed, and that is ok. my son skipped it, and i might have him do it when he is 4, when they would give a booster anyway. its perfectly safe and fine to skip the first dose.
www.askdrsears.com - check out the vaccine book. that book has every detail you can imagine about every vaccine. they also recommend an alternate vaccination schedule.

so, dont worry about this shot right now. she will get a booster in a year and a half anyway.

I agree with Gina. I gave my son tylenol before going in and he had no problems. Measles is on the rise again because so many are not getting there children vaccinated anymore. If you want more info go to cdc.gov.

I have 2 kids ages 3 and 1, both have had their MMR and there were no problems at all. I gave them tylenol before going to the Dr and then tylenol before bed. I know people are nervous about shots, but its worse for the parents than the kids. Good luck

My kids have not had any shots but when I was doing daycare I had a family with 2 boys who got really sore legs and the one could barely walk for a couple days. Some kids don't react at all. It's a personal choice to vaccinate or not but I just wanted to make sure that you know you do NOT have to. There is a form to sign that says you are against it and your child can go to public school, daycare, etc. They can NOT make you vaccinate.

Here are some informative websites.

We researched for about a year before we made our decision. But we do other preventative measures to keep our family healthy. We eat a lot of organic. Take natural multi-vitamins and fish oils. Drink only water and milk on a daily basis. Occasionally the kids will get juice as a treat. We don't eat fast food. Limit the amount of desserts. Etc. We feel that these will protect our kids more than the shots. We just couldn't live with the idea that if the 1 child to react to a vaccine was ours that we would be okay with that. IF the child who is brain-damaged or dies is yours, it's one too many.......

Good luck. Hope all goes well.

My son actually GOT measles from his MMR! I was amazed! Actually, I say that, but it was really funny. He gets lots of rashes quite easily, so I didn't worry about it, then it looked worse, so I called the doc and she said that since it's a live vaccine, kids can break out. The part that got me was that we were supposed to avoid immunosuppressed individuals for 6 weeks! My son was 18 months and getting his booster; we spend a lot of time with babies who have not yet been vaccinated. Anyway--he was not at all bothered by it, although the doc did tell us he was technically contagious while the rash was visible (about 3 days; by the time I called, it was day 3; day 4 it was gone--so it was very mild). Anyway--it amazed me that my son would get measles, and it was NOT a side effect I expected. It was really no big deal, but since I hadn't heard of anyone getting measles recently, it took me by surprise.

I had to have this shot right after my son was born because when they did my blood work during my pregnancy they said that my levels of the vaccine were low. it was nothing more then a quick pain and some soreness at the injection sight. I was advised to avoid daycare and schools until i got the shot because if an unvaccinated child had one of the illnesses and i got it, it could seriously harm my baby.

My daughter had no side effects at all. My son got pink spots all over his body. They did not itch and lasted for about 2 days I think. The Dr. said that was not a common reaction, though.

HI J.
So are you saying she has never had a MMR shot.or she just hasn't had her two year MMR. If you are concerned about giving them together ask the physician to give her seperate shots. so get meesels and then in two weeks to month go in for mumps and then rubella or whatever order you wish. as for side affects you will get a achy leg maybe a fever. same side affects that any other shot can cause. hope this helped. My boys just got a little tired and slept more that day. Maybe a sore leg at the site of the injection. You can give her Tylenol shortly before the injection (maybe 1/2 hour?) to help with the soreness. I used to bring the bottle of Tylenol with me to the appt. If she does get a little sore it helps to keep the leg moving even though that isn't necessarily what they want.
