Missed Cycle

This may sound like a strange question, but I need some help. I am nine days late with my period and have taken four (yes, four) pregnancy tests all of which were negative. In the 19 years I have had my period this is the only time I have been late, other than when I was pregnant with my son. I don't have any typical pregnancy symptoms other than general tiredness, but I am at a loss. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

I had this happen when I was pregnant with my son. It didn't show up on a pregnancy test until I was 18 or 19 days late.

with my first I was a month and a half late and still a negative pregnancy test so i went and had a blood test that was also negative so i went to the doctor and finally a positive test. I'm not saying you are prego but it's a possibility even if the test says it's negative. good luck!

Hi there, J.,

It might take up to 2 weeks for a pregnancy test to show as positive if you're pregnant. That's what I've experienced, anyway....

Take care!

With my first child, I took 5 tests, (one was a blood test in the doctor's office!)and all were negative until I was 4 weeks along. I just felt really tired; no other symptoms. You might just have to wait it out, hard as that is, and see if you get your period in the next couple of weeks and retake another test or two. Keep in mind that you will have a better chance of not getting a false negative first thing in the morning. There are other factors that can affect your period, so it's possible that all of those tests are correct.

When my husband and I were trying to get pregnant, I missed my period after the first month. Like you, I had never been late, so I just knew that I was preggo. But, I took four pregnancy tests and all came back negative! It took a full week before the first one came back positive and of course, I was pregnant. Give it a few days.

I also started having late periods when I turned 30. Then after my daughter was born I started skipping. My OBGYN said that she tells women once they turn 30 they may start to have 2-3 off periods. I now skip everyother period. If you don't have a period by the time your next one is due call your OB and if it is uncomfortable they can "force" a period. Welcome to your 30's :)

Sometimes a change in eating habits, stress or sleeping habit changes can affect your period. Try not to worry too much...wait a week or so and take another test. If you continue to miss periods make an appt with your ob/gyn. I have PCOS and only get two periods a year tops... plus I am an avid runner and if you have started working out on a regular basis that can make you miss one too. Good luck.

Eventhough you took 4 pregnancy test it is possible it may not show up if there is not enough hcg hormone yet so you may want to go to the doctor for a test. My friend not to scare you but missed her period and her test also tested negative when she was pregnant it ended up to be a tubal pregnancy so all didn't go well for her.Hopefully this is not the case!Maybe you are just late and should give it alittle time. Good luck to you and I hope all goes well :) J.

Check with your Dr...You might be pregnant and it JUST not showing up on a home test yet...Or maybe you are under MORE stress??(I only missed my period when I was pregnant..OR when my son was in the hospital...) So if your body is under MORE stress that can make you skip...

Ovarian cyst? An ovarian cyst will make you skip periods because the egg never gets released. I missed 4 periods and had a negative pregnancy test. When the cyst first forms, there are no symptoms other than the missing period.

Regardless, I would make an Dr. appt. They can do a blood test to check your hormone levels. If the correct hormones pop up, then you are pregnant. If not, I'd have the doctors look for a cyst. Usually that is done with an ultrasound

I would suggest going to the doctor and having them do a pregnancy test. 2 days before I found out I was pregnant with my tiwns I took 2 pregnancy tests, both were negative, so they definitely aren't 100% accurate!

Hi J.

I also had this problem and I missed for a couple months and all my tests came back negative . Went to the doctor and they did tons of tests . All came back normal . They gave me a shot of hormones and got me back on track . My doctor told me some times we just do not ovulate and that is why we miss our periods . If you do not ovulate you do not have a period . I do not know if you are on the pill or on any kind of birth control . I am not . I would call and get in to your doctor if you do not start soon .

I was like that, as well, but then with my second, I breastfed, but didn't stop menstruating...and about 8 months into breastfeeding, I skipped a cycle! I freaked, took a pregnancy test, and I'm not pregnant. Still don't know what was up with that--I'm like clockwork, always. My doc, of course, attributed it to hormones w/ breastfeeding, but I wonder why, after 8 months of breastfeeding (which is like 10 cycles for me), I would "suddenly" skip a period?? Anyway--she did say that skipping once is not a bad thing; skipping more than once is cause for dr's visit.

Who knows J., you may even have gotton your cycle by now, but I will respond anyway. There is a possibility of both things....

1) You can be just late. No big deal, even if you have not been before. 9 days even with clock work cycles is not a big deal. Sometimes stress or even climate changes can effect ANYONES cycle. So, I would not stress too much.

2) You can be pregnant and it just not showing up with a + Urine test. It can take a little bit for HCG hormones to surface in the urine, but most OTC test are just as good as any of the clinic urine ones. The only thing that is better is a blood test, but many clinics will not even do this unless you have a previous infertility problem or you are really late. We would not do ultra sounds this early just to confirm a pregnancy as it will eventually surface. You can not even get a heart beat until 6 weeks. Also some OTC (Over the counter) test are better than others at picking up the hormones. First Response cost a bit more but is more sensative to HCG than some of the cheaper brands. Clear Blue Easy is a good one as well.

Now the truth is if you are pregnant, would you change much besides maybe not drinking. If I were you I would just avoid the "hazzardous" stuff and wait and see. If it still does not surface then I would repeat the test with a higher brand. Good luck and share with us if you are bringing another little person into this world. (((HUGS))).

Hello J.,
I to went threw the same problem, mine was 2 weeks late and test after test they were negitive. I stopped stressing and the fallowing month it came right on time, stress, a change of diet or exercise can mess up your cycle. So have no worries right now if it does not show up next month, I would sugest seeing a doctor to have a pregnancy test done.

Put a digital thermometer, paper and pen, next to your bed, and take your temp right when you wake up every morning. When you ovulate your temp jumps .4 degrees. For example, my temp goes from 97.2 sometimes 97.4 up to 97.8 and on up to 98 after I ovulate. You should be in the higher temps right now. If you wake up and it's dropped back down ~.4 from what you'd been getting, you'll be starting your period that day. If it stays high for another 2 weeks, I'd take another test, and go in to have the doc do one. Otherwise, you could have just had some stress that put off ovulation. If you have any questions feel free to send them my way. Good Luck!

Sorry, but when we get to the 30's things start going wonky. It is frustrating, to say the least.
Mine has gotten so wonky that I started charting temps and cervical mucous and such to make sure that I am actually ovulating and to have a clue when I should be getting my cycle so I don't start thinking I am pregnant.
Not helping, lol. Watching closely makes me suspect every twinge is pregnancy symptoms, lol. But actually it has helped me feel more confident about things. I was worried about peri-menopause. My cycles have been from 23 days to 31 days long. It isn't bad news, I'm just not ovulating at that same point each month. And there are things I can do for that. I also have high progesterone, and I am working on balancing that out with some estrogen.

I would go in to the doctor for a blood test to rule out pregnancy and then start looking into PCOS if you continue to have long cycles. You can change that with diet, especially if you catch it quickly.

(oh, and I buy my pregnancy tests in bulk, lol. I am a poas addict, pee on a stick addict, we even have a name for ourselves!)

Try to relax and breath. :) Easier said then done, right? I've been where you are. Wondering, waiting, hoping. Call your doctor and talk to his nurse. I was 32 when my cycles went a little wacky. It could be just a fluke, your body slowing down, stress, any number of things. If you're not pregnant ask your doctor to test your hormone levels and see if they are low. Keep us updated.

I took 3 pregnancy test at least a week apart before I got a positive result. I think it takes some people longer to develope enough of what ever it is to make a positive test.

J.,

This happened to me in July (never missed one in 17yrs except when I was pregnant). I took a test when I was 4 days late and then 11 days late (both negative). I am on the pill and have been, but I thought maybe it wasn't working. After about 2 weeks of worrying, I just figured I would wait until I was suppose to get it in August and wala...it came on time as usual. I think it was just a b-day present to myself to have an aunt flo free week...LOL

Have you been under alot of stress lately or had a sudden weight loss or weight gain??

I would say just to wait a month (I know its hard) and see if you get it on your next cycle...

Good Luck!!!

Hi J.! This JUST happened to me, so I know exactly what you're going through! My period was due 8/24 and I didn't get it until yesterday. Like you, I have never skipped a month and my periods always have come like clockwork. I took 4 pregnancy tests, was frustrated, emotional etc. etc. My husband and I have a 17 month old son and would like to add on to our family soon, so I was also hopeful! I was getting annoyed with myself because it was occupying so much of my thoughts, so I tried to focus on my husband, son and the rest of life. then yesterday, out of the blue, I started my period. I still can't think of any reason my period would have been late, I haven't been under additional stress, changed my diet or exercise or anything! But I wanted to let you know what happened to me, because maybe you're period will be late in a fluke-ish way like mine was! I hope for your peace of mind it arrives soon :)

It's still possible that you might be pregnant. The home pregnancy tests don't give false positives, but they do give false negatives at times, if your hormone levels aren't high enough just yet. I'd give it another week or two and if you still don't get anything, test again. If you're still getting a negative, then go see a doctor to see if they can figure out what is going on. Good luck!

I know that my cousin had to actually take a blood test before she got a positive result (with both of her pregnancy's). The first few blood tests even said she was not pregnant but she just knew she was, so after three blood tests it finally showed that she was pregnant.
