MIRENA Side-effects

My 29-year-old daughter has recently had some serious, almost catastrophic side effects from Mirena birth control. Even after the removal, she is still experiencing some serious problems. We'd love to hear about any one else who has had physical problems from this birth control.

What can I do next?

I'm on another parenting site, and there is one posting with 57 responses, almost all from women saying they've experienced side effects of one kind or another (most seemed to be related to weight gain and irritability, but some were far more serious). Here is the link if you're interested, but I think you'll have to register (easy and well worth it though): http://www.mothersclick.com/question/mirena-iud-side-effe...

Hi there,
I had a Mirena IUD from for a little over a year and I had horrible migraine headaches, 2 week long periods, extreme heartburn and Vertigo 3 different times during the year which lasted at least 10 days each time. When I went to my regular doctor he said there was no way that the headaches or vertigo could have to do with the IUD because the IUD doesn't have any hormomes...come to figure out later that it does definately have hormones and that is why I went through horrible withdrawals after it was removed. It took about 3 months to get back to normal. I had horrible pain in my ovaries 2 weeks before my period-ovulation time. Which was crazy for me because my periods were never bad before I hadn't ever felt pain during ovulation. So, I don't know if any of this is helpfull, but I would recommend having her get the thing removed and give it a few months and she should be back to normal.

hi B., I personally have never used this, but i have heard stories about women who have. Camercials make birth control sound inviting, but the the truth is they all have potential dangers. Make sure she is seeing a good doctor. I pray for full recovery for your daughter. J.

PS Family First don't see to much of that anymore

for us. God First, Then family, it's all good. J.

Yes, I got severe depression from Mirena, and alot of weight gain. i had it for a year and a half and never realized that it was the Mirena giving me the issues. Painful intercourse was also a problem. going to have it removed, it almost tore my uterus, so I had to have emergency surgery to remove it! What a headache. After having i removed, i am feeling much better after almost 6 months! It will get better, slowly but surely.

I personally did not use the Mirena iud - however, do know of a woman who had to have it surgically removed after it was placed as it perforated her uterine wall and became embedded in the uterine wall. She since has had to have invitro fertilization for difficulties with fertility post IUD use as well.

I hope your daughter recovers fully from the use of this device. I know I will never use an IUD again - as I am pregnant with twins with my Paraguard IUD in place as well.

i had an iud about 4 years ago. i developed a serious case of pid (pelvic inflamatory disease). i of course had the iud removed and the infection did eventually clear up, but i am now very suspectable to bladder and uterine infections. i just have to be very careful with everything now. always use condoms (even know i am married) change tampons very often, and dont dismiss any possable sign of a problem. good luck, i know it is tough!

Hi B.-

sorry your daughter is having problems. I along with several of my friends have this IUD and we all love it. Periods are very short/ light if not at all each month, no thinking about taking a pill, little or no weight gain and bloating like some of the pills- we are very happy.

You didn't say what problems she is having but this specific IUD has a very safe track record, I did a lot of research prior to getting it after having my 3rd child. I hope your daughter has a good OBGYN so they can "fix" what is happening and to rule out other possible problems.
GOod luck-
