I have the Paragard. For medical reasons I can't have the Mirena. It is the best thing ever and I don't have to worry for 10 years! Insertion was easy and painless. Good luck
Hello Ladies! Has anyone had experience with Mirena or Implanon? Heard good or bad things about them? I was using Nuva ring before I got pregnant and my doctor asked me about birth control I was considering and suggested these two along with the one that goes under your arm. The under arm one is a no go...I just don't like that idea. I'm a bit skeptical of IUD's. What do you think? Thanks!
Sorry the Implanon is the underarm, I meant paraderm or para something...it starts with para...lol!
Thank you ladies for all your input and advice! I'm really considering the Paraguard because it has no hormones. Mainly because I do want to breastfeed again with this one and second, lately I've had outrageous mood swings with this pregnancy. Probably because of my marital situation :P But! all is good in my world and mind, lol. I'm skeptical of IUDs because its just the fact of how long it can be left in...I get scared it will get lost. But thank you all anyways, I appreciate it!

I would recommand the paragurd, it has no hormones. I had the mirena for two years and really didn't like the hormones all the time in my body. I couldn't lose weight on it, made me sleepy, and always just felt sick. Once I got it taken out I have felt so much better. When my doctor took it out he said if my cycle didn't come back in two months he would have to start me on medicine to start the cycle again.
I love Implanon too!
I have had the Paraguard for 2 1/2 years; I like that it has no hormones (plus my insurance wouldn't even cover the Mirena). I have not had any problems w/ it (make sure you take the Advil or whatever your MD recommends prior to insertion to decrease pain), just had heavier, more painful periods at the beginning, which were resolved w/ taking 800 mg of Advil every 8 hours for the first day of my period (as instructed by my MD). It is so nice not to worry about taking a pill everyday!
I had Mirena for about two years and just had it removed because of how crazy it was making me! Horrible mood swings, weight gain, and just a general don't care about anything attitude. It crept up slowly over the two years. I had it out about three weeks ago and can already tell a difference. However, I know a ton of women who have it and LOVE it. It just depends on your body I guess.
I'm on my second Mirena and due for my third next year. I LOVE it! I was a little nervous when I arrived to have it inserted and the GYN asked if I had "pre-medicated with advil"...I hadn't and felt some cramping...not much worse than period cramping. I took some advil when I got to the car and returned to work. I stopped getting my period which I LOVE!! Saved so much on tampoons and pads! I have had no side effects. I "pre-medicated" prior to removal and insertion of second one and it was virtually pain free.
I don't have to think about it and I love that although we do not plan to have any more children (I'm 40, Hub is 45)...the door is not permanently closed!
Good luck with whatever you decide.
I had the mirena after my first pregnancy and loved it! I took it out to get pregnant but after this baby comes I am getting it back in. It was only a little uncomfortable when I had it put it but it worked immediately and I never had any major issues. Only takes a sec to have it put in or taken out, best birth control I've ever used!
I got the Mirena after #3. I had it for 6 years (it's only "approved" for 5 in US, although in many European countries it's approved for 7 - according to my Doc - and I just delayed getting it out).
It was great. Well, the insertion was uncomfortable, and then I had spotting and breakthrough bleeding for a few weeks. After that, though, my periods got very light, then went to once every 3 months, then by the end of the first year, gone altogether. That was nice! And I never had to worry about if I had remembered to take my pill (I'm always forgetting, LOL), or put anything it, or whatever. The doc checked for the string at every annual checkup, and other than that I really didn't worry at all about it.
Got it out last May, and that was much easier than getting it put in. And we were able to get pregnant again in a few months.
I have implanon. I freaking love it! I have had some spotting every now and then but no side effects and they insert it under your arm and you just forget about it for years... no checking threads or anything. I have showed friends and they think it is awesome, they touch it and are completely amazed by it lol. Oh okay, you can disregard my post, but I'll leave it here just in case you change your mind lol. I haven't gotten pregnant and it is actually more effective than pills and such. It feels like a shot when they put a needle in to put local anesthesia and then they put the rod in.
Love, love, love the Mirena. I haven't had a period in 5 years and I don't MISS IT! Gave away all my boxes of tampons and pads to a friend who has heavy periods - she is jealous and waiting for the day she can get her Mirena. An OB-GYN through my practice first put in the paraguard, and I had it removed about 3 months later because I could not stand the heavy periods I was getting with it. A different OB-GYN who took out the PG and put in the Mirena said he was really surprised she had put in the PG because it was more rare these days since people love the non-existent (or much lighter periods) with the Mirena. The only downside is it must be replaced every 5 years, instead of 10 but it can be done in one session (old out- new in), and my insurance covers it anyway.
BTW, why are you skeptical of IUDs? I hope it is not because of that old Dalkon shield IUD that caused the scare in the 1970s. That was pulled about 40 years ago and is a thing of the past.
