I just got the Mirena IUD put in last week and since then there have been 2 days (not consecutive) where I have felt weak and nauseas. I'm wondering if this a possible side effect or related to the spotting, possible start of my period?? Anyone experience this? My son is 7 months and I'm still nursing so I haven't had a period since before pregnancy.

What can I do next?

I'm kindof bothered at a couple of the responses. i have had NO problems with my IUD. Just bc certain people have had problems doesn't mean that it will be that way for all. Did some of you that had a bad experience ever think that maybe YOU were the problem, not the IUD?
It's a little ridiculous to tell someone to have it removed immediately. You are most likely not a doctor, and certainly not her doctor. Just sayin'

Well you certainly will get horror stories if you search for it, but I'm on my second Mirena and I LOVE it! I think it could be normal. I spotted in weird patterns for the first 3-4 months with each one and then my periods basically slowed down and then basically disappeared. I'm almost 2 years into this one and I can't tell you the last time I had a period...it is awesome!

There are more positive stories than horror stories just like with ALL birth control. There is not one birth control that works for everybody. I would tend to think your issues are more of a coincidence than not. My gyn told me to continue to tell my positive story. I told her about the horror stories on this website. In all her years she has only removed 2 Mirenas due to complications.

I'm on my 2nd (8 years). No side effects, no problems, no periods. I feel bad for those that it did not work for them, but I wish they wouldn't make it sound like it is the end of the world to those that are inquiring about it. Like one response said, once it is removed, all the problems go away. So obviously it is not a long term problem.

**feeling weak and nauseous most likely means you need more nourishment since you are breastfeeding.

I hated mine. I had my period about 95% of the time... Extremely heavy. Completely lost any kind of sex drive. It made me moody, nauseous and light headed. I left it in for about 10 months and couldn't take it anymore. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I have taken it out and noticed a huge difference within a couple days... And after about 2 weeks I was back to my "normal"....

I did not have those symptoms. I would check with your doctor if it continues, but would not rush to have it removed. It takes a few months to adjust to it and I think that is set forth in the literature if your doctor didn't tell you that. I am at the end of the life span of my Mirena and I love it. No periods for the most part and the hormones don't bother me although I can not use the Patch, the Pill or anything else that puts the hormones right into your system because it gives me debilitating headaches. I had some spotting for the first few months with the Mirena, but clear sailing since them. My only real complaint is that it was much more painful to have it inserted than I expected it to be. However, I have IBS so that was probably a big part of the issue. I wish I had known though. I am kind of dreading having it removed, although at least now I know.

I've had mine for 4 months and I absolutely love it. And I haven't had a period since the day I got it put in. The day after I got it inserted I got a little lightheaded/dizzy, but I haven't had that feeling since. I think it was just my body adjusting to the hormones. I am also nursing my 5 month old and my 2 year old.

IT'S THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD, have it removed before it gets worse.

If you search 'Mirena' on here, you'll hear horror stories.

It's awful.

GOOD NEWS IS, once it's removed, you feel like a totally normal person again in just a few days :)

I'm on my 3rd year of Mirena and I love it! I do have to say the first 6 months were not pleasant, but after that it's wonderful. You are the only one that knows your body & if your not comfortable have it taken out.

Gotta second Rachel D - I had it and it was not good. I didn't get my period at all but lost my hair in clumps and couldn't not shed an ounce no matter how hard I tried. the hormone mimics pregnancy in your body - and if you've ever had trouble with Depo Provera or progesterone heavy birth control it's not going to work out well for you.

After trying for 4 months to lose some weight (and literally the scale did not shift even an ounce) i had it removed - within a week I'd lost a pound without even trying - I weighed myself coming off a week long vacation and was DOWN!

good luck - i've had friends that loved it but it did not do well by me.

to Val G - if you read my "negative" response again you'll see that i said it didn't work well BY ME (hey maybe i am the problem - wow) and that if she has trouble with progesterone heavy bc it might be a problem (again - not telling anyone to REMOVE IMMEDIATELY OR YOU WILL DIE)

geesh this is an online forum not a medical office

I LOVED my mirena but I did experience the mirena crash.. I think I'm really sensitive to changes in my body and it took me a bit to get used to the new hormone balance.. other than that and when I took it out it was amazing.. I blamed it for migraines I was having but even when I took it out the migraines got worse so yeah.. Other then the whole crash thing it was amazing.
