Welcome to Fort Belvoir. We live in the Woodlawn village. We have been here for almost a year now but I grew up in Woodbridge, so I know the area quite well. I have a 9yod,7yos, 4yod, 1 1/2yos. On post the SOSA center has many great activities for moms and kids. I would definitly look into that. In the S. there are three outdoor pools that are great and a membership is very reasonable.

I also second the Library System here. It is great!!

My kids love the Metro ride into DC. The zoo is free, the museams are free, the monuments are free, and there are MANY parks around the area.

My family loves to go on the Mount Vernon Parkway Walking/Runnig/Biking path. They love to see the water.

I hope you can learn to love the area like we do!!

I live around the corner in Springfield and will be starting a position at Ft. Belvior in two weeks. I have a three year old son and a 15 month old daughter. I don't know if your little girls would wanna play with a BOY! But if you're interested send me a note.

There are SO many free things to do in this area! All the monuments and museums downtown are free, there are always things in the local Washington Post advertising activities---especially check out the Friday "WEEKEND" section (a little newspaper included in the Post) and the Thursday LOCAL section. There are multiple libraries around that have story activities and puppet activities for free. There are local parks and county parks that also have some free things to do. Just a wealth of stuff in this wonderful area.

I found that a great place to meet moms in my age group was at a local La Leche League Meeting. They meet the third Friday of every month at 10:00am at Good Shephard Catholic Church:

Welcome to DC!

Welcome to the area! Here are a couple of ideas:

The Fairfax Co library system does tons of free or almost free activities in the libraries. Trips to the library are also great - picking out books and sitting down to read them in a comfy chair. Go here to look up library events: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/programsevents.htm (you can search by branch or by type of activity) Many are free or very minimal cost and it doesn't matter if you're a Fairfax resident, you just have to be willing to drive to the library branch.

You should sign up for the Park Service's e-newsletter that tells you about all of the activities at parks and rec centers. There are a LOT of parks with great playground equipment! Here's the calendar, you'll need to find the spot to sign up http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/calframe.htm Some of these do have fees, but they are very reasonable. Also, you should sign up for the Parktakes rec center class catalogue (published 2 times a year) to see even more options.

Out in Herndon is Frying Pan Park (free admission)- great to go to for an hour or so outing - its a farm park and all the new baby animals start being born in February! They also have special events (for a minimal cost) throughout the year (Milking Day, Sheep Shearing Day, etc.)

Another neat/short outing is your local pet store - they make great mini "zoo" trips. Some furry, some scaly and just the right amount of animals to keep a little one's attention. All indoors, which is great in the winter - head to the National Zoo in the spring!

Your kids are a little young to get much out of the rest of the museums and monuments, but it's worth toting them along so that YOU can see them and get out and about when the weather is nice.

There are also a whole bunch of Mom's groups all over the place - through churches and hobbies/interests and locations. This is a wonderful area to live in - if you can deal with the traffic and politicians. = ) Enjoy!

Welcome to DC! We just moved here in May from Oregon. We are at Belvoir quite often for appointments and stuff. We only live 10 minutes away. My kids are almost 4 (may) and almost 2 (april). My son is in preschool in the mornings, but my daughter and I are usually hanging around. I was an occupational therapist before we moved here and I am staying home now. We would love to meet sometime. I can tell you all about what is available on base and off. Some things are cheap and some are not :). Send me a note and we can hook up sometime.

Check out the website Go City Kids and look up Washington DC. I signed up for the free newsletter each week and it lists a lot of things to do in the area - some free, some for a price. The monuments and museums are a little daunting with 3 young children - I know because I'm a military spouse and do the single parent thing all the time. I bet Fort Belvoir has low cost activities. Do you live on post? Also, I've found a really GREAT church in Alexandria that my children love (3 girls - 7,5 and 17 months). If you want more information on that let me know. There is also a MOPS group that meets there. I also found a moms group via yahoo groups: DC metro mommies. There was a sub group for my area - Arlington/Falls Church and their may be one for where you live. Through that group there are playgroups, activites, mom's night out, etc. This S. you will LOVE the pools on Fort Belvoir! Welcome to the area! It is a bit overwhelming if you've never been here before (like me!).

You have had quite a few responses, but I just thought I had to say SOMETHING, because I have three girls around the same ages as yours, and I'm 26 as well!

Welcome to the area! I've lived here my whole life, so I'd be happy to help if you have any questions:)
