Migrain Headache's Since My Baby Was a Month Old

Hope somebody can help me with this. I have a 4 month old baby boy (he is my 3rd), I have been nursing him since he was born. Ever since he was about a month old I have started to get migrain headaches, I am getting them a couple times a month and they are really bad. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen before or might have any idea's as to what might be causing them. I never have had them before, I did nurse my first two baby's and never got them while nursing them. I have thought about what I have been eating and taking, I eat pretty healthy, I don't drink soda or coffee, and the only other thing I take is thyriod medication (I have had my thryriod checked at 8 weeks postpartum and it was fine on the dose of medication I was on). Any suggestions. A.

I was getting bad headaches after my second son was born, and my OB recommended I try taking Excederin Migraine. No other pain reliever touched those headaches, but one dose of those knocked them out. It might be worth a try.

A., it is now December and I am wondering; are your migraines resolved? Your Ob/Gyn should advise you that the postpartum hormone shift can be responsible, and certainly the change in your sleeping and eating schedule can contribute. Be sure you drink enough water, and if you have a partner, perhaps he can get up with the baby at night. Get a breast pump and have bottles ready for him to give for night feedings. Once your baby sleeps through the night and you resume your cycles, you may find they resolve or at least are less frequent. Feel better, and pace yourself through the holidays!

Maybe it has something to do with hormones. I got migrains during my second pregancy, around the 4th month. I got them almost every day for a month, then they just stopped. They returned when she was about 6 weeks old. I really think it was due to hormones. Also, I read one of the responses that said it could be due to gall bladder disease...I did have a couple of attacks shortly after she was born, and had to have it removed. The Dr. said it was due to pregnancy. Good luck!

I think you should go to the doctor and tell them you think you have ppd. I'm sure the thought would never even cross your mind to hurt your child but people that do hurt their childeren alot of times have ppd. I would most deffinetly contact your dr. ASAP.

Hi A., I would go see your family Dr. if I were you. I have had migraine headaches my whole life and when I was pregnant I was on extra magnesem that seemed to help then at 4 months pregnant they went away but came back after my son was born so Im back on my medication so mine didnt start after he was born and while I was breast feeding him so the best thing is to contact your Dr. if you havent already and he/she can maybe hopefully help you. Good luck I know those are no fun. L.

Did you have an epidural? It may be one of those side-effect headaches that they warn you about. Or, it may just be hormonal. I always get headaches pretty bad when I first go off or go on the pill. I know that it's hard to get time away with little ones, but when you get one, try relaxing in a warm bath or just lay in a dark room. They might start to subside.

Have you gone to the chiropractor since you delivered? I've gotten everything from headaches to numbness in my arms and legs after delivering, and a few visits to get my back adjusted was all it took. Plus, a little "me" time without the kids is always welcome. :)

Have your doc check your blood pressure. Also see if it's a side effect of your thyroid meds.

In my experience, migraines can come from hormone changes but mostly from a plugged liver and gallbladder which an M.D. will not help you with. You need someone in herbs like a Dr. of Naturopathy, possibly computer testing.

A.,
I really don't think it would have anything to do with nursing, i have 4 children and nursed all of them and i NEVER had headaches or migrains, are you getting enough rest? sleep??
if so i would definatley talk to your Dr. ASAP- if he is not getting anywhere, maybe you should get a 2nd opinion. Maybe you need to have some tests ran to rule out, whether it is something serious or not...just my opinion!!
But you never know.
I have a brother-n-law- who is only 32, that just found out last week he has skin cancer and he has 2 young children. He is having surgeries and tests done this week....not good!
anyways - he too was tired, and had headaches for about a year, he also had some tingling in his arm...i think they put him on some depression medication?? but he also had a spot on his arm, that was about the size of a pinky finger tip, that was dark, so he had it removed...and it turned out to be melanoma.
so my advice is, no matter how old you are...who you are...get it checked sooner better than later! You are young and your babies NEED you!
Take Care and good luck...best wishes to you and your family.

Hi A.,

I never had a headache in my life until I had my first baby was born. I started getting them when she was a few months old. Dr said stress, hormonal, lack of sleep ect.
It wasnt until a few years later after I could not take them anymore. As the previous person said Exederin Migrane worked the best. But now I take Topamax daily, which lessons the migranes from happening. I was getting them 4 to 5 times a week and now, maybe once a month. And if I get one I take a pill called Axert, and it wipes it out VERY quickly. Talk to your doctor and see. You may not need to do anything like that, but just to let you know what I have done. Best of Luck! I feel for you.

I have for sure and been put in the hospital for days at a time. I recomend that you start a headacch diary, record sleep patterns, stress levels and foods that you have eaten within the last 24 hours. 9 time sout of 10 there is a pattern. Also you may start to take a vitimin B complex, Costco has a great one that helps with sleep adn stress.
Hopefully this helps.

Your hormones are still adjusting back to normal, which can cause migrains. Sometimes the lack of estrogen can cause migrains. Some women use birth control pills to control the migrains. If this is the cause, there isn't much you can do until you stop breast-feeding. The only pill you can use only contains progestrone (not estrogen), which can actually make your headaches worse. Sorry.

A. - I just started getting Migraines in March of 2007, I have been to the doctor etc., I have cut out things but am also told that it can be hereditary (my mom gets them). Also, I had a friend that evertime she got her period she would get them really bad, that was 6 years ago. Her's just went away on their own. Stress is a very big factor too, you may not think you are stressed but, just the everyday living could put your mind at stress. Hope this helps.

I got migraines after having my daughter too. I went to the Dr. and did try various migraine medications...that is a hit or miss thing though, and never found one that worked great for me. Like everyone said it was part of the hormonal changes and as my daughter got older they got less and less. I'm pregnant now and not looking forward to them potentially coming back. I would definitely try some of the other ladies suggestions...like chiropractor. Good luck...hope they are gone soon!

I get Migrains when I dont drink enough water. Could this be the same with you? I know that with breast feeding you need extra water and nutriants. I dont know if this will help, but I thought I would bring it up. Good Luck!

My son is autistic and had suffered from abdominal migraines for years. Over the years he has been to doctor after doctor, tried many meds, and checked for allergies, all to no avail. He is now migrain free. What has helped him is chiropractic adjustments ( Dr. Dan Lyons in Howard is amazing)
